Expectations: What Do We Have In Common?
(John 2:1-11)
CBC 4/28/13 SM

INTRO: It’s normal to have expectations of Jesus.
If you listen to people praying it’s easy to identify their expectations.
Easy to EXPECT great things of Jesus b/c of His ministry History.
Notice this woman who had GREAT EXPECTATIONS of Jesus BEFORE He started His ministry.
John is instructed by the Holy Spirit to make it clear that the miracle at the wedding was the FIRST & BEGINNING miracle of Jesus’ ministry. vs 11
Eye catching that in vs 3 Jesus’ mother, Mary EXPECTED Jesus to remedy the shortage of wine...
that’s BEFORE Jesus ever did His FIRST MIRACLE...
What did Mary know or believe she knew?
Notice the servants obeyed Mary when she spoke...Bible doesn’t state her position at the wedding.
TEXT: On the third day there was a wedding at Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
2 Jesus also was invited with His disciples to the wedding.
3 And when the wine (3631 oy’-nos; 4608 sik’-er-ah is strong or intoxicating drink) was all gone, the mother of Jesus said to Him, They have no more wine!
4 Jesus said to her, [[a]Dear] woman, what is that to you and to Me? [What do we have in common? (virgin birth!!) Leave it to Me.] My time (hour to act) has not yet come. [vs 4:(A)Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament: “a term of respect and endearment.”]
5 His mother said to the servants, Whatever He says to you, do it.
6 Now there were six waterpots of stone standing there, as the Jewish custom of purification (ceremonial washing) demanded, holding twenty to thirty gallons apiece.
7 Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water. So they filled them up to the brim.
8 Then He said to them, Draw some out now and take it to the manager of the feast [to the one presiding, the superintendent of the banquet]. So they took him some.
9 And when the manager tasted the water just now turned into wine, not knowing where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew—he called the bridegroom (180 gallons of the best fresh grape juice)
10 And said to him, Everyone else serves his best wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then he serves that which is not so good; but you have kept back the good wine until now!
11 This, the first of His signs (miracles, wonderworks), Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory [by it He displayed His greatness and His power openly], and His disciples believed in Him [adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Him].
  • JESUS BEGINS HIS MINISTRY
    • John the Baptist prepared the way in John ch. 1
    • Jesus has begun to call his disciples
    • John ch. 2 Jesus begins to show by what authority He comes
    • He begins to prove His deity & power
    • But there’s more to it if you look behind the scenes
MARY’S REQUEST
  • Very concerned over the shortage of refreshment
    • don’t think she meant send a couple of your boys down to the corner store for some more welches...
    • Mary knew who Jesus was...virgin birth
    • Mary understood Jesus was the Son of God
    • something we all need to understand and live like we understand it
    • Mary based her expectation on who Jesus really was
    • so can we!!!
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS?
  • We all have expectations
    • we expect our car to start when we turn the key
    • we expect to make it through the day once we start it
    • I have expectations as your pastor
    • you have expectations as members of CBC
    • Our expectations will determine our course of action
    • If I don’t expect there to be any food at the house I’ll pick some up
    • If I expect to run out of gas I’ll stop and get some
LIVING IN EXPECTATION: v3
  • Says God can, I can’t.
    • (Daniel 3:29) Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way."
  • Says God is, I’m not.
    • (Psalms 77:13-15)13 Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God? 14 You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. 15 With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
  • Says God will, I’ll fail.
    • (Acts 5:38-39) Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."
RECEIVING OF EXPECTATIONS v 4-5
  • Don’t be in distress.
    • Jesus was not rebuking His mother.
    • Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
  • Don’t be in a hurry.
    • Psalms 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
  • Don’t proceed without His direction.
    • Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
    • Ecclesiastes 3:1There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven--
DELIVERING OF EXPECTATIONS v7-11
  • Expectations are met when we follow His instructions.
    • 7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
    • 180 gallons?
    • with well water?
    • makes no sense...
    • His ways are higher than our ways...
  • Expectations are met when we feast on His provisions.
    • 10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
    • There’s nothing better, no substitute for what God provides
      • being high on the Holy Spirit
      • God ordained sex in the marriage relationship
      • financial freedom in God’s economy
  • Expectations are met when we experience His glory.
    • 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
    • Jesus is the same today as He was back then
    • the open miracles were a testimony to who He was
    • we now know who Jesus is
    • He can work privately in our lives, but with the same power
    • what are you running short of today?
      • acceptance?
      • respect?
      • freedom?
      • time?
Conclusion:
What are your expectations today?
Remember what we said?
Our expectations determine our action.
Are we living in expectation today?
What did you expect when you came to the Lord’s house today?
What are we expecting Jesus to do in our life, in our families’ life, and in our Church?
What is the Lord expecting from You and Me today?...tomorrow?
