4 Expectations of Worship
Isaiah 6:1-6:8
CBC 3/3/13 SM

Am I “missing out” by going to church, (Early Worship, S.S., !0:45 Worship & 6:00pm worship) every Sunday?
Feel like ur being CHEATED?
Not excited about worship?
Leave church feeling empty?
If so, here’s the problem...
  • we must bring something to offering...
  • *our lives for 1
  • Romans 12:1(AMP) I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.
    • are we taking up our cross & following Jesus daily?
    • saying no to the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes & the pride of life? daily?
  • *our tithe for 2
  • Malachi 3: (AMP) 7 Even from the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My ordinances and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, How shall we return?
  • 8 Will a man rob or defraud God? Yet you rob and defraud Me. But you say, In what way do we rob or defraud You? [You have withheld your] tithes and offerings.
  • 9 You are cursed with the curse, for you are robbing Me, even this whole nation.(A)
  • 10 Bring all the tithes (the whole tenth of your income) into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and prove Me now by it, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.(B)
  • 11 And I will rebuke the devourer [insects and plagues] for your sakes and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground, neither shall your vine drop its fruit before the time in the field, says the Lord of hosts.
  • our worship should be an extension of the life we are living for Jesus Mon-Sat.
* with those things in place WE CAN EXPECT SOMETHING FROM WORSHIP
TEXT: ISAIAH 6:1-8 (AMP) In the year that King Uzziah died, [in a vision] I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the skirts of His train filled the [most holy part of the] temple.(A)
2 Above Him stood the seraphim; each had six wings: with two [each] covered his [own] face, and with two [each] covered his feet, and with two [each] flew.
3 And one cried to another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!
4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone and ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!
6 Then flew one of the seraphim [heavenly beings] to me, having a live coal in his hand which he had taken with tongs from off the altar;
7 And with it he touched my mouth and said, Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity and guilt are taken away, and your sin is completely atoned for and forgiven.
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for Us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
  • That is a description of a true worship experience
  • When we worship God we can expect 4 things:
  • do we expect to experience the awesome presence of God?
    • when we pray?
    • when we sing?
    • when we give?
    • when we take communion?
    • when we hear God’s word proclaimed?
  • anyone who ever encountered God was never the same again...
    • Moses @ bush & Mt. Sinai
    • Abraham called out of UR
    • Isaiah in the temple
  • When we expect God to be present our worship will be of a higher caliber
    • if ur in sports & the coach tells you to do your best during the game b/c there will be a scout watching you...don’t you put out your best effort?
Russell’s definition of worship: “Worship should be neither sheer boredom nor surface entertainment. It should convey a deep respect for the holiness, the majesty, the joy, the power of the Almighty God in our midst.
  • Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
    • we’re not singing to each other...but to God
    • we’re not giving our lives & tithes to CBC...but to God
    • we’re not praying for people to compliment us...but to God
    • we’re not listening to God’s Word out of courtesy or habit...but b/c God is speaking
  • true worship invokes an awareness of how sinful we really are
  • we tend to compare ourselves to other people, & focus on those we are better than
  • easy to get lulled into a sense of “I’m good enough” b/c I’m not as bad as them
  • true worship is standing before God & comparing our goodness to our PERFECT Savior
  • Ro 3:23...for all have sinned and COME SHORT of the glory of God
  • In the presence of God we see what we really are
  • Maybe the reason people resist true worship...THEY DON’T WANT TO SEE THEMSELVES AS THEY REALLY ARE
    • more fun to see the faults of others than admit our own fault & failure
    • Peter fell down @ Jesus’ feet saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
      • amazement had seized him for the great catch of fish...
    • Isaiah said, “I am a man of unclean lips”
  • Now they have seen the Lord & it’s time to MAKE A CHANGE
  • goal of true worship is not to leave us grieving
    • would be easy to feel overwhelmed by our sin & just give up
  • true worship is when we receive a CLEANSING FROM SIN & RELEASE FROM GUILT
  • Angel touched Isaiah’s lips & said, “your iniquity is taken away and your sin is forgiven”
  • ROMANS 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
    • God’s grace shines through our weakness
    • if you don’t feel like God can forgive you...
    • or if you can’t forgive yourself...
    • you’re saying SIN IS BIGGER THAN GOD...IT’S NOT!!!
  • 1 JOHN 1:7 but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
  • Experiencing God in worship cleanses us so we can leave REJOICING!!
  • Inspiration to serve our awesome God to the best of our ability
  • why would we want to serve a God who:
    • loved us first while we were still sinners
    • died & payed our sin debt
    • forgives us of all our sins
    • guides, guards & directs us 24/7/365
  • 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
  • Isaiah:
    • in the presence of God
    • convicted of his sinfulness
    • cleansed from his sins
    • now God has a job that needs to be done
  • NOTICE: What God DOESN’T SAY...
    • what it is
    • where it’s going to be
    • what it will cost
    • what it will entail
  • God just says, “WHOM SHALL I SEND”
    • Isaiah shouts, SEND ME!
  • God didn’t have to:
    • beg
    • run an announcement in the bulletin for over a month that our 1st & 2nd graders need a full time teacher
    • use a guilt trip
    • threaten anybody
  • James says, “faith without works is dead”
    • what would we think of Isaiah if he had said, “Well, I hope you find somebody.”
  • Most of the time when we leave church complaining...
    • most likely the problem is not the worship...
    • each week we should leave this place a new person, fresh & revived, ready for action
  • Freedom to worship
    • I was asked last week if the females in the audience can shout hallelujah...
    • YES
    • along with all the other worshippers here, Men & Youth included
* NOTE: when you cast a scowl look of disapproval toward someone that has brought their sacrifice to worship and discourage them, you are in the category of those that Jesus said it would be better if a millstone were hung around your neck and you were cast into the deepest part of the sea.
* God didn’t call us to judge & ram rod, He’s calling us to TRUE WORSHIP
