1 Corinthians; Proverbs 15|27:33|17-15|27:33|17
CBC 10/14/12 SM
INTRO: very few folks chat over the back fence or sip iced tea on the front porch and enjoy conversation with friends.
  • God designed us in His image & that’s a “relational” image
    • we need people to love us for who we are
    • we need people we can share a deep commitment with
    • we need someone to share our soul with occasionally
    • we need help instead of rejection and judgment
    • we need confidentiality in a friend, not a public broadcaster
  • Prov 18:24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. KJV
    • We must take the first step
    • we must choose carefully because they will affect us
  • 1 Cor. 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. KJV
    • don’t wander from the truth
    • Satan is the great deceiver
    • friends that have no character are harmful to our testimony & good morals
    • no communion between “light & dark”
    • choose friends that will affect us for good & make us better than we are now
  • Prov 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. KJV
    • ILL: knife maker @ silver dollar city, Branson, MO
    • metal must be hot
    • if believer is filled w/ fire of the Holy Spirit...
    • allows God to “hammer” them...
    • then has a Christian friend to lean on while God is “molding” them...
    • they will become SHARP! (fierce)
    • slicing through...
      • lies of the world, the flesh & devil
      • Christians friend will continually “sharpen” (challenge & motivate) us
      • Christian friends look for ways to make us better, not corrupt us
      • do your friends sharpen or dull you?
      • do you sharpen or dull them
  • 1 Cor 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. KJV
    • don’t compromise so we can have one foot in world and one in church
    • lost people see compromises as “hypocrisy” or “insincerity in your faith”
    • only dedication to God will win them
1 Cor 5:9-13
9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters for then must ye needs go out of the world.
11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? Do not ye judge them that are within?
  • 13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore, put away from among yourselves that wicked person. KJV
    • not to keep serious company or mingle w/ fornicators or the constant unrighteous
    • we are in this world, but we don’t have to adopt it’s lifestyle
* Rom 16:17-18
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the
doctrine, which ye have learned; and avoid them.
  • 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. KJV
    • We don’t need troublemakers as our friends (drama kings & queens)
    • create disunity among friends, churches and communities
    • Luther said, "Peace if possible, but truth at any rate."
    • they seek attention, have the victim mentality & are constantly whining
    • pray for them, but do not hang out with them
    • be there to welcome them back if they repent
* Lev 5:1 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity. KJV

  • Prov 29:24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not. KJV
    • choose carefully b/c they will bring judgement or blessing
    • condoning and agreeing with cursing is in the same sentence as helping a thief
    • “cursing” = in this case is “blasphemy & not SW AR “cussin’”
    • disrespecting God, taking His name in vain, etc.
* Obadiah 10-11
10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off forever.
  • 11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them. KJV
    • We will “stand somewhere”
    • with God & our godly friends or our ungodly friends
    • we are guilty before God when we stand by silently as “friends” mock Christians or sacred things
  • Luke 11:23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. KJV
    • no straddling the fence
    • with Christ or against Christ
* James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy
of God
  • we can be “friendly” with the world w/out being “FRIENDS” w/ the world
    • do good to all men when we have the opportunity
    • don’t have to be fond of the world system controlled by evil and the flesh
    • we are in the world, but we are not to be of it.
    • “enmity” opposite of “agape love”
    • closest friendships should be with believers (including marriage partners)
* Eccl 4:9-12
9 Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth
for he hath not another to help him up.
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
* 12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not
quickly broken. KJV
  • We are not to be LONERS
    • We need friends
    • we need family
