PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH
Matthew 28:17-20
CBC 5/20/12 SM 8:30am Service only
INTRO:
  • CBC has been in the “church” business for over 80 years
    • multiple pastor/teachers
    • multiple members
    • many folks saved
    • some baptized
    • some of them are members here today
    • the work of the CBC is not complete
TEXT: 17 And when they saw Him, they fell down and worshiped Him; but some doubted.
18 Jesus approached and, [a]breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.
19 Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them [b]into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you [c]all the days ([d]perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. [e]Amen (so let it be).
OUR FIRST DUTY V17
  • see Jesus, fall down & worship Him; DON’T DOUBT
    • attending church can become a...
      • habit
      • routine
      • self-gratification
      • conscious soother
      • because there is nothing better to do at the time
    • attending church is supposed to be about “seeing” Jesus
      • confessing our failures
      • interceding for others in need
      • petitioning for our needs
      • thanking & praising Him for who He is & what He has done for us
    • “fell down”
      • a show of humility, humbleness of mind
      • James 4:10 Humble yourselves [feeling very insignificant] in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you [He will lift you up and make your lives significant].
      • a show of respect for Him and His Word
    • “worshipped Him”
      • John 4:24 God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).
      • GR: worship- adore
        • do we attempt to “adore” God with physical adoration?
          • adore wife - give her flowers (what do we put on the communion table & why?)
          • we must worship [adore] God in “spirit” (the inner and foundational part of our being and existence)
          • we must worship [adore] god in “truth” [reality]
            • He is the creator & we are the created
            • He is almighty and we are weak
            • He is omnipotent & we’re omni nothing
            • He is everlasting & we are temporary (life a vapor)
            • He is infinite and we are finite
    • “some doubted”
      • Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].
PRESCRIPTION FOR JESUS’ PRESENCE IN OUR MIDSTV18
  • Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears and listens to and heeds My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will eat with him, and he [will eat] with Me.
    • V17 gives us the requirements for Jesus to be in our presence
    • it greatly benefits us for Jesus to be at CBC
    • He possesses all “authority”
      • over the devil & demons
      • over death, hell and the grave
      • over nature & our physical laws
      • over you, your neighbor and me
OUR ASSIGNMENT V19, 20
  • Go, Teach, Baptize & Disciple
    • Steps before “GO” are these
      • Organize to
      • Mobilize to
      • Evangelize
  • Church is not a “resort” & “retirement community” for old saints
    • not a social event that we have the “option” to attend on SM
  • LORD’S church is a “living organism” that Jesus instituted during His earthly ministry
    • proclaimed the “gates of hell would not prevail against it”
    • it consists of born again members who’s purpose is to engage in spiritual warfare
    • we are to draw the unconverted to hear the Gospel message taught, sung and preached
    • “Church” must be an atmosphere that is acceptable to both converted & unconverted
    • Unconverted cannot understand “spiritual matters” and therefore need the “milk” of the Word before they can feast on the “meat” that saints digest readily
    • design a “church” entirely for the saved and there will not be any lost people to preach or teach to
    • the remedy is for the “converted members” to engage in soul winning outside these 4 walls
      • how many people did you mention the gospel message to last week?
  • Jesus made himself attractive and available to sinners
    • He met them where they were in life (wasn’t afraid to get dirty)
    • He addressed the difficult questions and issues of life
    • He provided for their needs, physical, emotional & spiritual
    • He said the “sick” were the ones needing the physician, not the well
CONCL:
Have we so designed “church” with our personal preferences that is is incompatible for the average lost person?
Have we forgotten that we were once lost sinners in need of a Savior and someone took the time and made the effort to introduce us to Jesus?
Do we not care enough about the lost who are headed for an eternity in Hell to move from our padded pew and fill this altar with tears and pray on their behalf & then fill the highways and byways seeking the unconverted?
Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm every member of CBC needs to be in attendance as we ORGANIZE to, MOBILIZE to, EVANGELIZE!
