2 Timothy 4:1-4
CBC 5/13/2012 Mother’s Day
INTRO: At Law Enforcement Chaplain Academy they have a saying,
“If you want to be, be, but don’t be a wanna be.”
  • One has to make up their mind what their calling is...
    • cop
    • chaplain
    • there will always be people who don’t understand your calling b/c it’s what God called you to do and it doesn’t fit any known profile that they are used to.
  • The same principle applies to Christianity & Motherhood
    • There are true Christian’s (Moms, Dads, Kids)
    • then there are the “wanna be” Christians...
      • they dress like a Christian sometimes
      • they attend church occasionally
      • they even toss around Christian language every once in a while
      • on rare occasion they participate in “light” Christian activity (fun trips)
    • They want to be a Christian (with all the benefits, missing Hell & gaining Heaven, being led, fed & protected by the Holy Spirit...)
    • they can’t cut all ties to the present carnal lifestyle & relationships & totally follow Jesus, no questions asked.
    • Jesus is asking you today, Do you want to be “Carnal” or “Christian”?
  • When Jesus called the 12 disciples they LEFT BEHIND:
    • nets (source of their income)
    • tax collecting career
    • being a paid physician
    • family
    • friends...
    • and followed Jesus
  • They were obedient to Christ in
    • word
    • deed
    • schedule
    • all they way until the time of their death
Paul writes to Timothy (his disciple) with instructions how not to be a “wanna be”
TEXT: I charge [you] in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, Who is to judge the living and the dead, and by (in the light of) His coming and His kingdom:
2 Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], whether the opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching.
3 For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying], they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold,
4 And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions. 5 As for you, be calm and cool and steady, accept and suffer unflinchingly every hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fully perform all the duties of your ministry.
THE COMMISSION V1(preferring of authority to do Christian work)
  • “I charge (commission) you
    • God has “called” each person
      • to repentance
      • to relationship
      • to Christian duty
    • The call must be answered
      • individually
      • personally
    • regardless of our calling
      • Mom
      • preacher
      • Christian teen
      • Dad
    • Keep your sense of urgency
      • stand by
      • “BE” at hand
      • “BE” ready
    • Circumstances don’t matter
      • be what God wants
      • favorable circumstances
      • unfavorable circumstances
    • Proof is in the Puddin’
      • show people (how their life is wrong)
      • convince
      • rebuke
      • correct
      • warn
      • urge
      • encourage
      • be unflagging & inexhaustible (never give up on anybody)
        • in patience
        • in teaching
    • the time a’int coming no more, IT’S HERE
      • people won’t endure sound instruction
      • people want something pleasing & gratifying (selfishness)
      • people want someone who sees it “their way”
        • not necessarily God’s way
        • regardless of the error
    • we encounter these people in...
      • church
      • work
      • school
      • government
      • recreation
      • public
      • subject to be anywhere we go
    • don’t be surprised when the “wander off”
      • turning aside from Bible teaching
      • continuing in carnal life-styles
      • live lives of man-made fictions & myths
AS FOR YOU BE... V5 (the True born-again, blood bought, Christian)
  • Job Description that identifies the “real Christian” not a “POSER”
    • calm
    • cool
    • steady
    • accept and suffer unflinchingly every hardship,
    • do the work of an evangelist,
    • fully perform all the duties of “your ministry”.
If you wanna be a Christian, then “BE”, but don’t be a “wanna be”!
Christians fill this altar and stain it with tears and prayers for the lost
Christians move out of their pew and make amends for wrongs they’ve committed
Christians go to people and forgive them in person who’ve hurt them
Christians make the visitors feel welcome with a personal contact
Christians tell the lost abut a Savior
Are you a Christian or a wanna be?
