PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH
Matthew 28:17-20
CBC 5/20/12 SM 8:30am Service only
INTRO:
  • CBC has been in the “church” business for over 80 years
    • multiple pastor/teachers
    • multiple members
    • many folks saved
    • some baptized
    • some of them are members here today
    • the work of the CBC is not complete
TEXT: 17 And when they saw Him, they fell down and worshiped Him; but some doubted.
18 Jesus approached and, [a]breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.
19 Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them [b]into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you [c]all the days ([d]perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. [e]Amen (so let it be).
OUR FIRST DUTY V17
  • see Jesus, fall down & worship Him; DON’T DOUBT
    • attending church can become a...
      • habit
      • routine
      • self-gratification
      • conscious soother
      • because there is nothing better to do at the time
    • attending church is supposed to be about “seeing” Jesus
      • confessing our failures
      • interceding for others in need
      • petitioning for our needs
      • thanking & praising Him for who He is & what He has done for us
    • “fell down”
      • a show of humility, humbleness of mind
      • James 4:10 Humble yourselves [feeling very insignificant] in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you [He will lift you up and make your lives significant].
      • a show of respect for Him and His Word
    • “worshipped Him”
      • John 4:24 God is a Spirit (a spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (reality).
      • GR: worship- adore
        • do we attempt to “adore” God with physical adoration?
          • adore wife - give her flowers (what do we put on the communion table & why?)
          • we must worship [adore] God in “spirit” (the inner and foundational part of our being and existence)
          • we must worship [adore] god in “truth” [reality]
            • He is the creator & we are the created
            • He is almighty and we are weak
            • He is omnipotent & we’re omni nothing
            • He is everlasting & we are temporary (life a vapor)
            • He is infinite and we are finite
    • “some doubted”
      • Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].
PRESCRIPTION FOR JESUS’ PRESENCE IN OUR MIDSTV18
  • Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears and listens to and heeds My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will eat with him, and he [will eat] with Me.
    • V17 gives us the requirements for Jesus to be in our presence
    • it greatly benefits us for Jesus to be at CBC
    • He possesses all “authority”
      • over the devil & demons
      • over death, hell and the grave
      • over nature & our physical laws
      • over you, your neighbor and me
OUR ASSIGNMENT V19, 20
  • Go, Teach, Baptize & Disciple
    • Steps before “GO” are these
      • Organize to
      • Mobilize to
      • Evangelize
  • Church is not a “resort” & “retirement community” for old saints
    • not a social event that we have the “option” to attend on SM
  • LORD’S church is a “living organism” that Jesus instituted during His earthly ministry
    • proclaimed the “gates of hell would not prevail against it”
    • it consists of born again members who’s purpose is to engage in spiritual warfare
    • we are to draw the unconverted to hear the Gospel message taught, sung and preached
    • “Church” must be an atmosphere that is acceptable to both converted & unconverted
    • Unconverted cannot understand “spiritual matters” and therefore need the “milk” of the Word before they can feast on the “meat” that saints digest readily
    • design a “church” entirely for the saved and there will not be any lost people to preach or teach to
    • the remedy is for the “converted members” to engage in soul winning outside these 4 walls
      • how many people did you mention the gospel message to last week?
  • Jesus made himself attractive and available to sinners
    • He met them where they were in life (wasn’t afraid to get dirty)
    • He addressed the difficult questions and issues of life
    • He provided for their needs, physical, emotional & spiritual
    • He said the “sick” were the ones needing the physician, not the well
CONCL:
Have we so designed “church” with our personal preferences that is is incompatible for the average lost person?
Have we forgotten that we were once lost sinners in need of a Savior and someone took the time and made the effort to introduce us to Jesus?
Do we not care enough about the lost who are headed for an eternity in Hell to move from our padded pew and fill this altar with tears and pray on their behalf & then fill the highways and byways seeking the unconverted?
Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm every member of CBC needs to be in attendance as we ORGANIZE to, MOBILIZE to, EVANGELIZE!

DON’T BE A WANNA “B”
2 Timothy 4:1-4
CBC 5/13/2012 Mother’s Day
INTRO: At Law Enforcement Chaplain Academy they have a saying,
“If you want to be, be, but don’t be a wanna be.”
  • One has to make up their mind what their calling is...
    • cop
    • chaplain
    • there will always be people who don’t understand your calling b/c it’s what God called you to do and it doesn’t fit any known profile that they are used to.
  • The same principle applies to Christianity & Motherhood
    • There are true Christian’s (Moms, Dads, Kids)
    • then there are the “wanna be” Christians...
      • they dress like a Christian sometimes
      • they attend church occasionally
      • they even toss around Christian language every once in a while
      • on rare occasion they participate in “light” Christian activity (fun trips)
    • They want to be a Christian (with all the benefits, missing Hell & gaining Heaven, being led, fed & protected by the Holy Spirit...)
    • they can’t cut all ties to the present carnal lifestyle & relationships & totally follow Jesus, no questions asked.
    • Jesus is asking you today, Do you want to be “Carnal” or “Christian”?
  • When Jesus called the 12 disciples they LEFT BEHIND:
    • nets (source of their income)
    • tax collecting career
    • being a paid physician
    • family
    • friends...
    • and followed Jesus
  • They were obedient to Christ in
    • word
    • deed
    • schedule
    • all they way until the time of their death
Paul writes to Timothy (his disciple) with instructions how not to be a “wanna be”
TEXT: I charge [you] in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, Who is to judge the living and the dead, and by (in the light of) His coming and His kingdom:
2 Herald and preach the Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], whether the opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them, rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching.
3 For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying], they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold,
4 And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions. 5 As for you, be calm and cool and steady, accept and suffer unflinchingly every hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fully perform all the duties of your ministry.
THE COMMISSION V1(preferring of authority to do Christian work)
  • “I charge (commission) you
    • God has “called” each person
      • to repentance
      • to relationship
      • to Christian duty
    • The call must be answered
      • individually
      • personally
HERALD THE WORD V2
    • regardless of our calling
      • Mom
      • preacher
      • Christian teen
      • Dad
    • Keep your sense of urgency
      • stand by
      • “BE” at hand
      • “BE” ready
    • Circumstances don’t matter
      • be what God wants
      • favorable circumstances
      • unfavorable circumstances
    • Proof is in the Puddin’
      • show people (how their life is wrong)
      • convince
      • rebuke
      • correct
      • warn
      • urge
      • encourage
      • be unflagging & inexhaustible (never give up on anybody)
        • in patience
        • in teaching
INTOLERABLE PEOPLE V3 & 4
    • the time a’int coming no more, IT’S HERE
      • people won’t endure sound instruction
      • people want something pleasing & gratifying (selfishness)
      • people want someone who sees it “their way”
        • not necessarily God’s way
        • regardless of the error
    • we encounter these people in...
      • church
      • work
      • school
      • government
      • recreation
      • public
      • subject to be anywhere we go
    • don’t be surprised when the “wander off”
      • turning aside from Bible teaching
      • continuing in carnal life-styles
      • live lives of man-made fictions & myths
AS FOR YOU BE... V5 (the True born-again, blood bought, Christian)
  • Job Description that identifies the “real Christian” not a “POSER”
    • calm
    • cool
    • steady
    • accept and suffer unflinchingly every hardship,
    • do the work of an evangelist,
    • fully perform all the duties of “your ministry”.
INVITATION:
If you wanna be a Christian, then “BE”, but don’t be a “wanna be”!
Christians fill this altar and stain it with tears and prayers for the lost
Christians move out of their pew and make amends for wrongs they’ve committed
Christians go to people and forgive them in person who’ve hurt them
Christians make the visitors feel welcome with a personal contact
Christians tell the lost abut a Savior
Are you a Christian or a wanna be?

THE SCIENCE OF SIN
1 Peter 5:8
CBC 5/6/12 SM
A black hole is a region of spacetime from which nothing, not even light, can escape.[1] The theory of general relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact mass will deform spacetime to form a black hole. Around a black hole there is a mathematically defined surface called an event horizon that marks the point of no return. It is called "black" because it absorbs all the light that hits the horizon, reflecting nothing, just like a perfect black body in thermodynamics.
TEXT:8Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [[a]in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.
SATAN USES SIN...
  • Sin (transgressions against God’s law) come in many flavors & sizes
    • alcohol & improper drug use including but not limited to nicotine
    • sex outside marriage
    • unforgiveness
    • selfish anger
    • putting God 2nd or in any position but 1st
    • dishonoring parents
    • lying
    • coveting
    • murdering
    • stealing
    • super-sizing food portions when not necessary
  • Sin is attractive to our “nature
    • since the disobedience of our ancestors, Adam & Eve we inherited a nature prone to sin
    • sin appeals to our senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing
    • we rationalize the acceptance of sin so that we can be...
      • accepted
      • normal
      • have “fun”
      • relieve stress & a number of other excuses
  • Sin is a black hole that has an “event horizon”
    • the point around the surface of the black hole that marks the point of no return
    • the “Trick & Trap” of the “just one time won’t hurt” LIE
    • ILL: shop vac & box of kleenex
      • kleenex represents
        • virginity & purity (just one time & it’s gone forever)
        • character
        • physical appearance (meth)
        • quality of life
        • person’s potential
        • usefulness to God and society
        • finances
        • relationships (spouse, kids, parents, friends, church, Lord...)
        • time
        • high standards
          • car becomes an unsightly wreck
          • work becomes sub-standard
          • beg, borrow & steal
          • dependability & honesty depreciates
          • loyalty becomes disfigured (sin preference becomes the “almighty” over family, friends & even God)
SATAN USES SIN TO DEVOUR MANKIND
  • Losses Include but not limited to
    • job
    • reputation
    • marriage
    • family
    • church membership
    • life (the person’s as well as others)
    • eternal life with creator (Satan’s goal)
    • become creatures of the shadows & dark (men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil)
    • it’s “DARK” in a black hole
EVEN “LIGHT” IS SUCKED INTO A BLACK HOLE BY THE GRAVITATIONAL FORCE
John 9:5As long as I am in the world, I am the world's Light.
  • Sin of Mankind pulled Jesus into the black hole
    • theory of relativity doesn’t take into account JESUS CHRIST
    • there is no rehab in the Bible apart from regeneration in Jesus Christ
    • Man kind has no strength, plan or program than can overcome the gravitational pull of sin
    • the only freedom is through the one who defied darkness and overcame the law of gravity & therefore the law of relativity
    • Who walked on the WATER?
    • who walked on the water with Jesus as long as he was abiding in Jesus?
    • what happened when Peter took his eyes off Jesus? gravity sucked him down
    • Jesus said, “Without me, ye can do nothing”
    • who was sucked under again (figuratively) when he said he would defend Jesus to the death & then denied Him three times?
    • We don’t save & defend Jesus, He saves & defends us!
    • Who forgave the ones nailing him to the cross? Jesus
    • Who came back from the dead & out of the grave? Jesus
    • Who defied gravity & ascended into heaven? Jesus
  • Bible says we can share in His power and resurrection
    • Hell is a permanent & eternal place of darkness & torment with no escape
    • It’s the belly of the black hole of sin
    • It’s the final place of torment for Satan himself
    • It’s the final place of torment for all those who never trusted Jesus to pull them from it’s gravitational force & allowed Satan to “DEVOUR” them with sin

A DOCTRINE ALMOST NO ONE BELIEVES IN
SO YOU WANT TO BE A DISCIPLE?
(3 Requirements To Be A Disciple)
Luke 14:26-33
CBC 4/22/12
TEXT:26If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his [own] father and mother [[a]in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God] and [likewise] his wife and children and brothers and sisters--[yes] and even his own life also--he cannot be My disciple.
27Whoever does not persevere and carry his own cross and come after (follow) Me cannot be My disciple.
28For which of you, wishing to build a [b]farm building, does not first sit down and calculate the cost [to see] whether he has sufficient means to finish it?
29Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and is unable to complete [the building], all who see it will begin to mock and jeer at him,
30Saying, This man began to build and was not able ([c]worth enough) to finish.
31Or what king, going out to engage in conflict with another king, will not first sit down and consider and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand [men] to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
32And if he cannot [do so], when the other king is still a great way off, he sends an envoy and asks the terms of peace.
33So then, any of you who does not forsake (renounce, surrender claim to, give up, [d]say good-bye to) all that he has cannot be My disciple.
  1. V26 LOVE FOR JESUS ABOVE ALL OTHERS
  • Our love for Jesus so great that love for others looks like hate in comparison
    • Problem #1: We think it costs too much
      • try to please others first and Jesus second
      • natural to take care of our FAVORITES first
      • ILL: mow my yard before I mow yours
    • Problem #2: People don’t really want disciple for a husband, wife, child, friend...
      • most just want a BETTER husband, wife, child, friend...
      • DISCIPLE:
        • prays in restaurants OUT LOUD
        • stops people on the street for SOUL WINNING
        • turns off TV and gets Bible out
        • ILL: wife w/ 2 kids divorced newly saved husband...too much God!
    • Great Commandment Matt. 22:36Teacher, which [a]kind of commandment is great and important (the principal kind) in the Law? [Some commandments are light--which are heavy?]
    •     37And He replied to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (intellect).
      • heart: emotions (love [action word] with the capacity you have)
      • soul: life element (life pursuit of God)
      • mind: understanding, intellect (God seems to be left out of educational instruction, “the possessor of ALL KNOWLEDGE”
      • ILL: TV Commercial, “the mind is a terrible thing to waste”...If mind not on God it’s wasted already!
  1. V27 BEAR THE CROSS
  • Be willing to be
    • spit on
    • mocked
    • persecuted
    • most just go home
    • ILL: coach ever made you practice in difficult circumstances? mud, heat, cold...did you go home?
    • ILL: ever seen people at a football game in the cold, rain, heat,...& say they can’t come to church b/c they keep the temp. too cold or hot?
    • ILL: can’t come to church, I have a headache...but you go to work or school Monday morning with the same headache
    • ILL: I just can’t get to church on time 10:45am, but you make it to work at 8am?
    • Be willing to bear the cross if you want to be a true disciple
  • Cross: Instrument of torture and pain with suffering
    • Jesus got “messed up” when they put Him on that cross
    • to be a disciple: we’re going to get dirty & messed up
  • Cross soetimes to heavy
    • God will always provide someone to help carry the load
    • Simon of Cyrene helped Jesus carry His cross when it got too heavy
    • we never know what we can life & carry till we “catch a hold”
  1. V33 FORSAKE ALL YOU HAVE
  • Selfishness
    • Garden of Eden - tempted to be “equal with God”
    • Egypt - Pharaoh using Jews as slaves for personal reasons
    • Canaan & Jordan - Lot & Abraham: Lot chose fertile plain (Sodom & Gomorrah)
    • Modern times - negotiate multi-million dollar contracts for sports while teachers & civil servants struggle to make a living
    • Schools sell their soul, taking out Bible, teaching evolution etc, for the Federal dollar
    • how long since you worked to GIVE instead of GET?
  • 1 Tim. 6:10For the love of money is a root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have been led astray and have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves through with many [a]acute [mental] pangs.
    • keeps our eyes in the wrong places
    • causes us to “qualify” people (give rich attention & neglect the poor)
    • satan has our world just where he wants it
      • times are evil
      • it’s a place of greed
      • popular attitude is “look our for #1, ME
* Mark 10:20And he replied to Him, Teacher, I have carefully guarded and observed all these and taken care not to violate them from my boyhood.
21And Jesus, looking upon him, loved him, and He said to him, You lack one thing; go and sell all you have and give [the money] to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come [and] accompany Me [[a]walking the same road that I walk].
22At that saying the man's countenance fell and was gloomy, and he went away grieved and sorrowing, for he was holding great possessions.
23And Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, With what difficulty will those who possess wealth and [b]keep on holding it enter the kingdom of God!
  • Matt 16:26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life [his blessed [a]life in the kingdom of God]? Or what would a man give as an exchange for his [blessed] [b]life [in the kingdom of God]?
    • success?
    • prosperity?
    • peace?
  • Matt 6:33But seek ([a]aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness ([b]His way of doing and being right), and then all these things [c]taken together will be given you besides.
    • benefit on earth
      • needs met
      • bear fruit of Spirit: love, joy, peace... (person great to be around)
      • abundant life: filling of Holy Spirit
      • help through storms of life
    • benefit in eternity
      • crown of life & other rewards
        • our work doesn’t go unnoticed by God
      • a “well done thou good and faithful servant” from God Himself
CONCL:
So you want to be a disciple of Jesus
