Proverbs 6:16-19
CBC 3/25/2012 SM
Every church must deal biblically with Gossip, Slander & Discord
Why? Because every church is made up of people like me & you, SINNERS
Fact is most know very little about dealing with the issue when it comes up
Sowing discord is one of the most heinous sins in the Bible
TEXT: 16These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him:
    17A proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,(A)
    18A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil,
    19A false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren.
    • Def. - Casual or unconstrained reports about other people, typically involving details that are not true (half-truth is still a lie) Oxford English Dictionary
    • Hebrew Word - a whisperer
    • Clearly Identified as Sin:
Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (NAS)

      • love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness
Paul names gossip as SIN
2 Corinthians 12:20 For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may find you to be not what I wish and may be found by you to be not what you wish; that perhaps there will be strife, jealousy, angry tempers, disputes, slanders, gossip, arrogance, disturbances; 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have sinned in the past and not repented of the impurity, immorality and sensuality which they have practiced.
  • Paul held gossip as a reason to be afraid of God
  • Paul held gossip as a reason to mourn
  • Paul says gossip has a root cause of impurity, immorality & sensuality
Paul lists gossip in his discourse to the Romans
Romans 1:29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
  • Paul lists gossip as being as unnatural among believers as the sin of homosexuality
    • Gossip is Warned Against
    • Proverbs 26:17-28 (ESV)
    • 17 Whoever meddles in a quarrel not his own
          is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears.
    • 18 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death
    • 19 is the man who deceives his neighbor
          and says, “I am only joking!”
    • 20 For lack of wood the fire goes out,
          and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases.
    • 21 As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire,
          so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife.
    • 22 The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels;
          they go down into the inner parts of the body.
    • 23 Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel
          are fervent lips with an evil heart.
    • 24 Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips
          and harbors deceit in his heart;
    • 25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not,
          for there are seven abominations in his heart;
    • 26 though his hatred be covered with deception,
          his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
    • 27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it,
          and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling
    • 28 A lying tongue hates its victims,
          and a flattering mouth works ruin.
    • v20 - lack of wood the fire goes out...
    • v27 whoever digs a pit will fall into it & they get run over by the stone they start rolling
  • Proverbs 16:28 (ESV)28 A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.
    • nothing honest about gossip among Christian brothers & sisters
    • devil likes nothing more than “separation” in the church
    • especially if Christians do the work themselves
1 Timothy 5:13 (ESV)13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.
  • Paul speaks in reference to young widows who give in to their “natural” desires
    • instead of committing themselves to the cause and work of God
    • Definition: A false and malicious spoken statement that may bring harm to the reputation of another (Oxford English Dictionary)
    • Hebrew: defamation; - evil report

PAUL 2 Corinthians 12:20 (ESV)For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.
PETER 1 Peter 2:1 (ESV)So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
PSALMIST Psalm 15:1-3 (ESV)
O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
    Who shall dwell on your holy hill?
2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right
    and speaks truth in his heart;
3 who does not slander with his tongue
    and does no evil to his neighbor,
    nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
    • Warned Against
Proverbs 20:19 (NAS) He who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets, Therefore do not associate with a gossip.
Psalm 101:5 (NAS) Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy;
No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.
    • When dealing with information and communication (modern technology...)
    • important to think through our actions in order to avoid gossip & slander
    • ask ourselves whether or not we need to speak at all about what we know (or THINK WE KNOW)
      • Is It Kind?
        • say kind things
        • encourage, extol & praise one another often
        • don’t say unkind things
        • don’t get involved in gossip or slander
      • Is It True?
        • never share anything we’re not certain about it’s truth
        • is it true, yet unkind? should not be shared
        • just because something is true doesn’t mean it should be shared
      • Is It Necessary?
        • if the occasion arises we must share things that are unkind but true
        • if a brother or sister is engaged in destructive, sinful behavior
        • we confront the issue privately to no avail
        • we are instructed to get 2 or 3 witnesses to go with us
        • goal is to get them assistance and call them to repentance
        • NOT light Facebook & Twitter up like the 4th of July
James 3:6-12 (ESV) 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
If you have a tongue, a sin nature and a way to get to this’s open for us all.
