THE POWER OF TRUTH
John 8:31,32
CBC 4/15/12 SM
INTRO: Many live life based on Half-truths
Some based on outright deception & un-truth
Life is a series of choices - based on available information
that info can be correct or sometimes incorrect
TEXT John 8:31So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples.
32And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.
3 RELATIONSHIPS WE ALL HAVE
how can we live in the power of the truth in these relationships?
THE TRUTH ABOUT TRUTHS
Bible Is Inspired By God
2 Tim. 3:16Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action),
All Truth is God’s truth
law of gravity not spelled out in the Bible but it’s true
God has specifically revealed Himself in the Bible & how we can know Him
We Can Teach Ourselves Truth
every person can live by certain truths and have success in life
Christians enjoy a special privilege
Romans 12:2a Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude],
God helps Christians live by truth
Christians have more freedom to change their mind than the unsaved
John 16:13a But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth).
We Need Others To Teach Us Truth
when we don’t have a clue what the truth is
when we don’t want to face the truth of a matter
Prov. 27:5Open rebuke is better than love that is hidden.
6Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are lavish and deceitful.
FACT, FAITH, FEELING TRAIN
PICTURE A 3 PIECE TRAIN (Engine, Middle Car & Caboose)
to most (not all)
Engine = feelings & emotions
Mid Car= faith
Caboose=fact
Most let “feelings” & emotions lead life
that puts “faith” in the emotions
which in turn becomes a corrupt “fact”
ILL: ever get “feeling” someone doesn’t like you, you believe it & never go around them?
Need to let “Facts” lead the train
Engine = facts
Mid Car= faith
Caboose=feelings
now apply this analogy to our 3 important relationships
BELIEVING TRUTH ABOUT GOD
  • ever get “feeling” God is distant and unkind (it’s a lie)
    • tragic circumstances can cause this incorrect “feeling”
    • pain & loneliness in our life present a negative image of God
    • facts to combat this lie
Psalm 145:18The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him sincerely and in truth.
19He will fulfill the desires of those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him; He also will hear their cry and will save them.
  • ever get “feeling” God is safe & predictable (it also is a lie)
    • we’re comfortable with a God we can “control” & understand
    • God’s not a SPARE TIRE
    • facts to combat this lie
Isaiah 66:1THUS SAYS the Lord: Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool. What kind of house would you build for Me? And what kind can be My resting-place?(A)
2For all these things My hand has made, and so all these things have come into being [by and for Me], says the Lord.
    • there is not adventure as extreme as “Walking with God”!
BELIEVING TRUTH ABOUT OURSELVES
  • ever get “feeling” I’m unlovable? (It’s a lie)
    • everybody has their moments of struggle
    • nobody wants anyone to know their struggle
    • facts to combat this lie
Jer 31:3The Lord appeared from of old to me [Israel], saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you.
    • God knows all about us & still desires a relationship with us
  • ever get “feeling” I’m self-sufficient”? (It’s a lie)
    • make all the decisions
    • be my own boss
    • create my own reality
    • independent of anyone else
    • Motto of self-sufficient, “If you want something done right you gotta do it yourself”
    • facts to combat this lie
Prov 3:5Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.
6In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.
Prov 14:12 There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, but at the end of it is the way of death.
BELIEVING TRUTH ABOUT OTHERS
  • ever get “feeling” other people are out to get me? (lie)
    • a mistrust of everyone and the lack of faith in our fellow man contributes to this
    • other people are used by God to “SHAPE OUR CHARACTER”
    • “Holy Sandpaper”
    • fact is....
2 Sam. 12:7Then Nathan said to David, You are the man!
  • ever get “feeling” other people are there to serve me? (lie)
    • does everybody owe us?
    • does the Government owe us a living?
    • does the house of benevolence owe us our daily needs?
    • fact is....
John 13:34 I give you a new commandment: that you should love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you too should love one another.
    • life is about what we can give other, not what they can give us
THE TRUTH YOU “KNOW”
TEXT:31So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples.
32And you will know the Truth, and THAT Truth will set you free.
  • Circle word “KNOW”
    • not truth in abstract that sets anyone free
    • truth is ready and available, but the world is still in turmoil & lives are still shattered
    • truth you KNOW, sets you free!
    • truth is:
      • Jesus died for your sin
      • Jesus arose from the grave the 3rd day triumphant over death, hell, sin, satan & grave
      • Your salvation & ticket to heaven has already been purchased
      • if you don’t EXPERIENCE a relationship with Jesus you FORFEIT it all!
3 SIMPLE STEPS TO “KNOWING THE TRUTH & BEING SET FREE”
  • Meditate on and study the Bible
    • Sun - 8:30a, 9:45a, 10:45a, 6:00p, Mon. - Ladies Bible Study, Tue. - Recovery Group, Wed. - AWANA & Pastoral counsel
    • no excuse for not getting in the Bible
    • printed form, electronic form, internet form...
    • we can’t live in the power of truth unless we read & digest Bible scripture
  • Live by truth not emotions
    • remember the train
    • recognize that feelings are subject to change, but facts do not
  • Get involved in Christian “community”
    • there are other Christians who have the answer from experience to your situation or question

THE UNIVERSE-ALL EQUALIZER: A Servants Heart
Philippians 2:3-11
CBC 4/8/12 EASTER SM
INTRO: What does Sacrificial Love look like?
Do we necessarily have to die to exhibit, sacrificial love to another?
  • Is our ATTITUDE one of CONCEIT or HUMILITY?
  • Is our PERSPECTIVE one of SELFISHNESS or OTHERS MORE IMPORTANT?
  • Is our FOCUS/CONCERN one of PERSONAL INTERESTS or INTERESTS OF OTHERS?
  • Is our ACTIONS one of SERVE ME or SERVE OTHERS?
TEXT:
Phil 2:3Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].
4Let each of you esteem and look upon and be concerned for not [merely] his own interests, but also each for the interests of others.
5Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:]
6Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [[a]possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not [b]think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped [c]or retained,
7But stripped Himself [of all privileges and [d]rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being.
8And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross!
9Therefore [because He stooped so low] God has highly exalted Him and has [e]freely bestowed on Him the name that is above every name,
10That in (at) the name of Jesus every knee [f]should (must) bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11And every tongue [[g]frankly and openly] confess and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
IT’S NOT FOR FAKES...BECAUSE IT’S SPIRIT DRIVEN
5Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus:
IT’S NOT FOR WEAKLINGS...BECAUSE SERVING IS A POWERFUL THING.
6Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [[a]possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God],
IT’S NOT FOR THE INSECURE...BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT SECURITY
did not [b]think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped [c]or retained,
    • Knowing He was pleasing God was all the security Jesus needed
IT’S NOT FOR THE INDECISIVE...BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT CHOOSING TO SERVE
7But stripped Himself [of all privileges and [d]rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being.
IT’S NOT FOR THE SELF-POSSESSED...BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT EXPLORING MY SPOUSE’S WORLD TO DISCOVER HIS OR HER NEEDS
8And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further]
IT’S NOT FOR VICTIMS...BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT BEING A VICTOR
and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross!
IT’S NOT FOR PEOPLE PLEASERS...BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT PLEASING GOD
9Therefore [because He stooped so low] God has highly exalted Him and has [e]freely bestowed on Him the name that is above every name,
10That in (at) the name of Jesus every knee [f]should (must) bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11And every tongue [[g]frankly and openly] confess and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
CONCL:
E.V. Hill, prominent pastor in Los Angeles, CA.
Mid ’60’s rioting ravage the city of Watts near L.A.
Dr. Hill denounced the unbiblical & sinful actions of his neighbors from the pulpit
He received death threats
As the riots increased so did the sermons against it
The phone rang one night and the caller told Dr. Hill that they were going to blow up his car with him in it.
He declined from telling his wife when she asked what the message was, but finally did.
The knew there was no way to stop someone from wiring his car with a bomb during the night.
The next morning Dr. Hill couldn’t find his wife when he woke up
Eventually she came driving in the drive-way in the car
She had taken it around the block to make sure there was no bomb on board that would take the life of her husband.
THAT IS TRUE SACRIFICIAL LOVE
Dr. Hill stated that he never doubted how much his wife truly loved him.

HANDWRITING ON THE WALL
Daniel 5:22-31
3/25/12 SN
22And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart and mind, though you knew all this [knew it and were defiant].
23And you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven, and the vessels of His house have been brought before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know; but the God in Whose hand your breath is and Whose are all your ways you have not honored and glorified [but have dishonored and disgraced].
24Then was the part of the hand sent from the presence of [the Most High God], and this writing was inscribed.
25And this is the [a]inscription that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN--numbered, numbered, weighed, divisions.
    26This is the interpretation of the matter: MENE, God has numbered the days of your kingship and brought them to an end;
    27TEKEL, You are weighed in the balances and are found wanting;
28[b]PERES, Your kingdom and your kingship are divided and given to the Medes and Persians. [Foretold in Isa. 21:2, 5, 9.]
29Then Belshazzar commanded, and Daniel was clothed with purple and a chain of gold put about his neck, and a proclamation was made concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

LOOKING PAST THE BUG GUTS ON THE WINDSHIELD
Proverbs 6:16-19
CBC 3/25/2012 SM
Every church must deal biblically with Gossip, Slander & Discord
Why? Because every church is made up of people like me & you, SINNERS
Fact is most know very little about dealing with the issue when it comes up
Sowing discord is one of the most heinous sins in the Bible
TEXT: 16These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him:
17A proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,(A)
18A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil,
19A false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren.
MEANS AND METHODS OF SOWING DISCORD
  • GOSSIP
    • Def. - Casual or unconstrained reports about other people, typically involving details that are not true (half-truth is still a lie) Oxford English Dictionary
    • Hebrew Word - a whisperer
    • Clearly Identified as Sin:
Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (NAS)
  • Instructions
    • walk by the guidance of the Holy Spirit
    • gossip is a flesh controlled tongue
    • kin-folk of gossip
      • immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these v19-21
    • danger is “such things will not inherit the kingdom of God”
      • participating in those fleshly acts do not mature us in our walk with Jesus v21
    • maturity comes from fruit of the Holy Spirit
      • love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness
Paul names gossip as SIN
2 Corinthians 12:20 For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may find you to be not what I wish and may be found by you to be not what you wish; that perhaps there will be strife, jealousy, angry tempers, disputes, slanders, gossip, arrogance, disturbances; 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have sinned in the past and not repented of the impurity, immorality and sensuality which they have practiced.
  • Paul held gossip as a reason to be afraid of God
  • Paul held gossip as a reason to mourn
  • Paul says gossip has a root cause of impurity, immorality & sensuality
Paul lists gossip in his discourse to the Romans
Romans 1:29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
  • Paul lists gossip as being as unnatural among believers as the sin of homosexuality
    • Gossip is Warned Against
    • Proverbs 26:17-28 (ESV)
    • 17 Whoever meddles in a quarrel not his own
is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears.
    • 18 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death
    • 19 is the man who deceives his neighbor
and says, “I am only joking!”
    • 20 For lack of wood the fire goes out,
and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases.
    • 21 As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire,
so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife.
    • 22 The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels;
they go down into the inner parts of the body.
    • 23 Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel
are fervent lips with an evil heart.
    • 24 Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips
          and harbors deceit in his heart;
    • 25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not,
          for there are seven abominations in his heart;
    • 26 though his hatred be covered with deception,
his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
    • 27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it,
and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling
      .
    • 28 A lying tongue hates its victims,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.
    • v20 - lack of wood the fire goes out...
    • v27 whoever digs a pit will fall into it & they get run over by the stone they start rolling
  • Proverbs 16:28 (ESV)28 A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.
    • nothing honest about gossip among Christian brothers & sisters
    • devil likes nothing more than “separation” in the church
    • especially if Christians do the work themselves
1 Timothy 5:13 (ESV)13 Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.
  • Paul speaks in reference to young widows who give in to their “natural” desires
    • instead of committing themselves to the cause and work of God
  • SLANDER
    • Definition: A false and malicious spoken statement that may bring harm to the reputation of another (Oxford English Dictionary)
    • Hebrew: defamation; - evil report
    • Identified as SIN
PAUL 2 Corinthians 12:20 (ESV)For I fear that perhaps when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder.
PETER 1 Peter 2:1 (ESV)So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
PSALMIST Psalm 15:1-3 (ESV)
O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?
2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right
    and speaks truth in his heart;
3 who does not slander with his tongue
and does no evil to his neighbor,
    nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
    • Warned Against
Proverbs 20:19 (NAS) He who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets, Therefore do not associate with a gossip.
Psalm 101:5 (NAS) Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy;
No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.
  • RULES OF THUMB
    • When dealing with information and communication (modern technology...)
    • important to think through our actions in order to avoid gossip & slander
    • ask ourselves whether or not we need to speak at all about what we know (or THINK WE KNOW)
      • Is It Kind?
        • say kind things
        • encourage, extol & praise one another often
        • don’t say unkind things
        • don’t get involved in gossip or slander
      • Is It True?
        • never share anything we’re not certain about it’s truth
        • is it true, yet unkind? should not be shared
        • just because something is true doesn’t mean it should be shared
      • Is It Necessary?
        • if the occasion arises we must share things that are unkind but true
        • if a brother or sister is engaged in destructive, sinful behavior
        • we confront the issue privately to no avail
        • we are instructed to get 2 or 3 witnesses to go with us
        • goal is to get them assistance and call them to repentance
        • NOT light Facebook & Twitter up like the 4th of July
GENERAL INSTRUCTION ON UNCONSTRAINED SPEECH
James 3:6-12 (ESV) 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
INV:
If you have a tongue, a sin nature and a way to get to this altar...it’s open for us all.
