PASSING JUDGMENT
ROMANS 14:10-12
CBC 3/4/2012
A scripture you hear quoted a lot by both Christians & Non-Christians...
“Judge not that you be not judged”
Short version - “don’t judge me”
Is that correct?
is that genuine love, not to judge???
10Why do you criticize and pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you look down upon or despise your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.
11For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God [acknowledge Him to His honor and to His praise].(A)
12And so each of us shall give an account of himself [give an answer in reference to judgment] to God.
What about those scriptures that call for judgment?
WE USE JUDGMENT ALL THE TIME
  • what is it we don’t judge?
    • we judge if we can make it to church and back on how much gas is in the car
    • we judge if the toothpaste we’re buying will do the job or not
    • we judge if the clothes we put on are suitable or not
    • we judge people...are the compatible enough to be my friend, good doctor.....
    • and the list goes on & on & on
    • what happens if we don’t make judgments?
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “MAKING” A JUDGMENT & “PASSING” JUDGMENT
  • Passing Judgement
    • look beyond what a person says or does into the very heart of the person as though you have the ability to discern:
      • why they do what they do
      • the foundation from which it is being done (i.e. whether they are genuinely saved or not)
  • Making a Judgment
    • person is not a good salesman, I want another salesman
    • Passing Judgment - this person is not a good salesman b/c his heart is wicked, his intentions are wicked, he’s trying to intentionally harm me, and take advantage of me, and I know this because I see what’s in his soul.
  • the better we know people the more likely we are to pass judgment on them
    • we assume we know not only the wrong action, but where it came from
    • what the intention of the heart was
WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO “PASS” JUDGEMENT
  • We don’t have the authority
    • v10 why pass judgment on your brother
    • that’s an “equal” relationship
    • passing judgment is the act of a “superior” not a brother
    • Phil. 2:1-41 SO BY whatever [appeal to you there is in our mutual dwelling in Christ, by whatever] strengthening and consoling and encouraging [our relationship] in Him [affords], by whatever persuasive [a]incentive there is in love, by whatever participation in the [Holy] Spirit [we share], and by whatever depth of affection and compassionate sympathy,
    •     2Fill up and complete my joy by living in harmony and being of the same mind and one in purpose, having the same love, being in full accord and of one harmonious mind and intention.
    •     3Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].
    •     4Let each of you esteem and look upon and be concerned for not [merely] his own interests, but also each for the interests of others.
    • That’s the relationship we have with our brothers & sisters in Christ
    • Rom. 12:10Love one another with brotherly affection [as members of one family], giving precedence and showing honor to (out do) one another.
    • Rom. 12:16Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.
    • Rom. 14:13Then let us no more criticize and blame and pass judgment on one another, but rather decide and endeavor never to put a stumbling block or an obstacle or a hindrance in the way of a brother.
    • Rom. 15:5Now may the God Who gives the power of patient endurance (steadfastness) and Who supplies encouragement, grant you to live in such mutual harmony and such full sympathy with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
    • Rom 15:7Welcome and receive [to your hearts] one another, then, even as Christ has welcomed and received you, for the glory of God.
    • We are brothers & sisters in Christ, and the act of “Passing Judgment” is to take a position of superiority over another...THAT’S SIN!
    • The one who has the authority is GOD...and we a’int Him.
  • We Lack the Insight To Pass Judgment
    • we don’t know the heart of another
    • we don’t know if it was an error or on purpose
    • we don’t even know our own heart...how can we know another’s?
    • 1 Sam. 16:7But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
    • Jer. 17:9The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]?
    •     10I the Lord search the mind, I try the heart, even to give to every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
    • Heb. 4:13And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, naked and defenseless to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.
  • We Lack the Ability to Pass Judgment
    • You did it to be because you are evil
    • I did it to you because I made a mistake
    • we know they are bad, but we give ourself the benefit of the doubt
    • Husbands & Wives listen to this...
  • We Lack the Purity to Pass Judgment
    • everyone has a weak point(s)
    • everyone has a strong point(s)
    • none of us are “righteous” (do right acts every single time)
    • we will stand before the righteous Judge for passing judgment on our brother
    • 7 judgments
      • on earth
      • beast & false prophet
      • gentile nations
      • Israel
      • Satan
      • unbelievers
      • believers (not for sin, but for our behavior) don’t expect to make 100
  • We Lack the Occasion to Pass Judgment
    • that’s when our brother/sister stands before Christ
    • we a’int Christ who will judge the living & the dead
    • blasphemy to get in His territory
CONTEXT:
eating or not eating meat sacrificed to an idol
WHAT ARE WE COMMANDED TO DO?
  • Rebuke Sin
    • Matt. 18:15 “If your brother wrongs you...(SINS against you) not has a different preference
    • only church body, after proper procedure can withdraw fellowship, but not out of the Kingdom if they are truly saved
    • I Cor 5: man shacking up with his stepmother...
    • 9I wrote you in my [previous] letter not to associate [closely and habitually] with unchaste (impure) people--
    •     10Not [meaning of course that you must] altogether shun the immoral people of this world, or the greedy graspers and cheats and thieves or idolaters, since otherwise you would need to get out of the world and human society altogether!
    •     11But now I write to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of [Christian] brother if he is known to be guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolater [whose soul is devoted to any object that usurps the place of God], or is a person with a foul tongue [railing, abusing, reviling, slandering], or is a drunkard or a swindler or a robber. [No] you must not so much as eat with such a person.
    •     12What [business] of mine is it and what right have I to judge outsiders? Is it not those inside [the church] upon whom you are to pass disciplinary judgment [passing censuring sentence on them as the facts require]?
    •     13God alone sits in judgment on those who are outside. Drive out that wicked one from among you [expel him from your church].
    • It’s not about PERSONAL PREFERENCES, it’s about SIN as documented by God’s Word!
    • hold the “preferences” up to the Word & don’t put them in the place of Biblical essentials
    • Essentials hold us together as a body
    • Preferences gives us “flavor”
    • when preferences differ it puts us through the EXERCISE OF “LOVE”
    • Heresy & Sin must be called out & held to the light of scripture (still not passing judgment)
