Romans 6:5-14
CBC 3/11/2012
Romans ch 1-4 tell us our need for justification
Ch. 5-8 tell us about our sanctification
Ro. 6 most complicated chapter in Romans
We are sinners b/c our Representative, Adam sinned & passed it to us
Like a Federal Headship (King of country) declares was...citizens of that country go to war...Adam (our Federal Head) sinned & and all the citizens of that race are sinners.
Ch. 5 we get a NEW Federal Head - accept Christ by faith (New Birth)
Christ succeeds where Adam failed
  • Justification grants the believer victory over sin
    • in the here and now
    • in the end of the age at the 2nd Coming of Christ
  • Gospel - the pronouncement of what Christ has accomplished (good news)
    • it’s not what “I” did
    • “I” have decided to follow Jesus
    • “I” invited Jesus into my heart
    • “I” gave my life to Jesus
    • as opposed to...
    • “I” only answered the Holy Spirit’s call to new birth
Do we overcome sin by proper: Outlet, Understanding, Technique, Environment
We overcome sin by allowing God to save us when His Spirit convicts & calls us
  • v6 in Adam we were enslaved to sin & death had dominion over us
    • think of the worst crime ever committed that you know about
    • know this, that is unusual because people are not as bad as they could be
    • righteousness is contrary to a lost persons nature, they won’t choose that
    • when lost people do good things remember that “doing righteousness to God” was not the primary intention...self-glory is still SIN
    • Romans 8:5For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and [a]pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and [b]seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit. 6Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that [c]comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever]. 7[That is] because the mind of the flesh [with its carnal thoughts and purposes] is hostile to God, for it does not submit itself to God's Law; indeed it cannot.
    • Lost Man CANNOT please God
  • v9 in Christ (born again) victory over sin is inevitable & death has no dominion over us
    • 1 Jn 3:4Everyone who commits (practices) sin is guilty of lawlessness; for [that is what] sin is, lawlessness (the breaking, violating of God's law by transgression or neglect--being unrestrained and unregulated by His commands and His will).
    •     5You know that He appeared in visible form and became Man to take away [upon Himself] sins, and in Him there is no sin [[a]essentially and forever].
    •     6No one who abides in Him [who lives and remains [b]in communion with and in obedience to Him--deliberately, knowingly, and [c]habitually] commits (practices) sin. No one who [habitually] sins has either seen or known Him [recognized, perceived, or understood Him, or has had an experiential acquaintance with Him].
    •     7[d]Boys (lads), let no one deceive and lead you astray. He who practices righteousness [who is upright, conforming to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action, living a consistently conscientious life] is righteous, even as He is righteous.
    •     8[But] he who commits sin [who practices evildoing] is of the devil [takes his character from the evil one], for the devil has sinned (violated the divine law) from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done].
    •     9No one born (begotten) of God [deliberately, knowingly, and [e]habitually] practices sin, for God's nature abides in him [His principle of life, the divine sperm, remains permanently within him]; and he cannot practice sinning because he is born (begotten) of God.
    • not communicating sinlessness “in this life”
    • makes us uncomfortable because “once saved always saved” means people won’t continually strive for righteousness.
    • sanctification is NOT about what WE strive for
    • sanctification is ABOUT what CHRIST has done and applied to our life
    • the SOURCE of our righteousness is JESUS CHRIST
    • keep Him in the forefront of our mind guarantees us victory over sin
  • Three Types of Hope
    • God has declared those with a relationship with Jesus as “righteous” (He has put us in a right relationship with Himself) Romans 3 (Freedom from the PENALTY of sin.)
    • our hope that we will be delivered from the PRESENCE of sin. V5 (that is a future hope, it is not now) (we are IN CHRIST & will have a resurrection like His) Eph 1:3 May blessing (praise, laudation, and eulogy) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!4Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as His own] in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love. 5For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will [[a]because it pleased Him and was His kind intent]--6[So that we might be] to the praise and the commendation of His glorious grace (favor and mercy), which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In Him we have redemption (deliverance and salvation) through His blood, the remission (forgiveness) of our offenses (shortcomings and trespasses), in accordance with the riches and the generosity of His gracious favor, 8Which He lavished upon us in every kind of wisdom and understanding (practical insight and prudence), 9Making known to us the mystery (secret) of His will (of His plan, of His purpose). [And it is this:] In accordance with His good pleasure (His merciful intention) which He had previously purposed and set forth in [b]Him, 10[He planned] for the maturity of the times and the climax of the ages to unify all things and head them up and consummate them in Christ, [both] things in heaven and things on the earth.                                     (If you are married who is your NEXT OF KIN?....ur mother or ur spouse? YOUR SPOUSE!/                                                                                   illustration of our relationship of being IN Christ:/                                               all that is His is ours
    • v6 we don’t have to “serve” sin & 7 we died IN CHRIST and are freed from sin We have a RIGHT NOW HOPE because v10 because we are IN CHRIST and He lives unto God, WE LIVE UNTO GOD. (that was earned for us by Christ, not anything we did ourself)
  • V11 consider yourselves also dead to sin & your relation to it broken
    • remember your victory we have in Christ
    • reminds us that Christ has won & we are IN HIM
    • 13th Amendment Abolish Slavery
      • it’s the law you’re not a slave but every fiber of your body knows nothing else
  • v12 don’t let sin rule as a king your short-lived bodies, making you yield to its cravings
    • as a slave remember you are free and don’t act like a slave any more
    • we were born as a slave to sin but don’t act like that any more
  • v13 don’t continue offering or yielding your bodily members to sin as tools of wickedness, GIVE YOURSELF TO GOD
    • we are a weapon of righteousness not one of unrighteousness
    • every time we attend worship, singing, praying, preaching, reminds us of what is true about us!
  • v14 for sin shall not exert dominion over you, since now you are not under Law as slaves, but under grace as subjects of God’s favor & mercy
    • don’t live there any more
    • not works righteousness
    • not free from the Law, we are now FREE TO OBEY
    • our “nature” has been changed
  • consider it to be true of us
  • don’t give yourself to camp we don’t belong to anymore
  • give yourself to the ones to whom you belong
When we nail a pet sin to the cross it will scream out at first, but leave it there & eventually it will DIE!
