ULTIMATE QUESTIONS ABOUT LIFE
Colossians 1:15-16
CBC 3/18/2012
Every human (archeology bears this out) has questions.
these questions can be narrowed down to 4 categories
Who am I?, Why am I here?, What is wrong with the world?, and How can what’s wrong be made right?
There are actually 2 answers for each question.
One answer comes from our “culture” and the other answer, from the “Bible”
ANSWERS FROM OUR CULTURE
  • Who Am I?
    • you are an accident
    • you are a mistake
    • you are a glorified ape
    • you are the result of random evolutionary process
    • no rhyme, reason or purpose
    • a pathetic reality when evolution runs its full course
    • human beings have NO VALUE
    • you therefore are ultimately NOTHING
  • Why Am I Here?
    • you are here to consume and enjoy
    • that’s the only thing that matters
    • John D. Rockefeller, famous philanthropist was asked, “How much money is enough? His answer, “Just a little bit more.”
  • What Is Wrong With The World?
    • People are insufficiently educated
      • people don’t know enough about...
        • money
        • health care & weight loss
        • sex & reproduction
        • social issues
        • accepting each other’s preferences
    • People are insufficiently governed
      • people aren’t being watched enough
        • gov’t health care
        • gov’t education
        • gov’t protection
        • gov’t religion & ethics
  • How Can What Is Wrong Be Made Right?
    • Simple, more education and government
      • teach people more and give them more information
      • combat AIDS through AIDS Awareness
      • combat racism through anti-hate classes
      • combat domestic battery through anger-management classes
      • raise tax money so government can educate the people
ANSWERS FROM THE BIBLE
  • Who Am I?
    • You can’t figure out who you are until you first discover who Jesus Christ is
    • Jesus is the image of the invisible God
    • by him all things were created
    • all things were created through him and for him (Col. 1:15,16)
    • Jesus is the exact representation of God
    • He is the picture of God in human flesh
    • He is God on this earth
    • He is God with us, Emmanuel
    • He is God among us
    • I am created by God - in his image & likeness (Gen. 1:26)
    • I am not the result of random process
    • Bible says whether I am tall & beautiful or small and not so handsome,
      • whether my body functions perfect or is severely deformed
      • I am the crowning glory of the creation of God
      • as a result I have inherent dignity
      • I have inherent worth
      • I have inherent value
  • Why Am I Here?
    • “All things were created through him and for him...that in everything he might be preeminent? (Col. 1:16b-18)
    • Ultimate purpose of all things is to bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ
    • That’s why I exist
    • That’s why you exist
    • Therefore our existence goes far beyond consumption and enjoyment
  • What Is Wrong With The World?
    • I know what you are thinking... “government & having to go to school”...lol
    • no, here’s what’s wrong with the world
    • I am...
    • You are...
    • despite the fact that we are the crowning glory of the creation of God
    • created to live and bring glory and honor to the Lord Jesus Christ
    • we are instead hostile and disobedient toward the One by whom and for whom we were created
    • “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned - every one - to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6)
    • Bible calls this disobedience towards God “sin”
    • Bible says that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Ro. 3:23)
    • SIN is what’s wrong with the world.
  • How Can What Is Wrong Be Made Right?
    • Only by the substitutionary, atoning death of Christ
    • “He [Jesus] has now reconciled you in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and beyond reproach before him” (Col. 1:22)
    • No Other Means by which we can be made right with God.
    • “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
    • “For our sake [God] made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21)
    • Nothing else that could have been done that would allowed God to be righteous and also be the one who makes us right
    • in the mercy of God the Father he punished his Son in our place in order to satisfy his righteous wrath against sin.
    • our only hope is to believe in Jesus who was crucified for us and rose again (1 Cor. 1:23, 15:3-4)
    • the sinless Lamb of God gave his life to pay a debt that he did not owe
    • on behalf of sinners who could never pay him back!
CONCLUSION
  • Notice what happens when these two sets of answers are placed side by side
    • CULTURE - we are left worthless, empty & hopeless
    • left on our own to pursue satisfaction...that can never be found
    • BIBLE - says we are precious
    • we have purpose
    • we were valuable enough to be purchased
  • only way what’s wrong in your life can be made right is for you to believe the Bible
    • believe Jesus took the punishment for your sins
    • by dying on the cross as a substitute for you
    • and that he rose from the dead three days later
    • showing God had accepted his death on the cross as the payment for the sin-debt that we owed to God
    • if you believe this to be true...
    • repent (completely turn from) your sinful patterns of life
    • place your faith completely in Jesus Christ
    • God promises “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart (mind) that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Ro. 10:9)
  • The answer to life’s ultimate questions is CHRIST
    • those who walk aimlessly through life will never be satisfied with the answers the culture gives
      • how much money is enough...just a little bit more
      • how much alcohol is enough...just a little bit more
      • how much sex is enough...just a little bit more
      • how much drugs is enough...just one more high
      • never satisfied...
  • Christ is the only one who will ever satisfy.
  • Have you entrusted your life to him?

DEAD OR ALIVE?
Romans 6:5-14
CBC 3/11/2012
Romans ch 1-4 tell us our need for justification
Ch. 5-8 tell us about our sanctification
Ro. 6 most complicated chapter in Romans
We are sinners b/c our Representative, Adam sinned & passed it to us
Like a Federal Headship (King of country) declares was...citizens of that country go to war...Adam (our Federal Head) sinned & and all the citizens of that race are sinners.
Ch. 5 we get a NEW Federal Head - accept Christ by faith (New Birth)
Christ succeeds where Adam failed
  • Justification grants the believer victory over sin
    • in the here and now
    • in the end of the age at the 2nd Coming of Christ
  • Gospel - the pronouncement of what Christ has accomplished (good news)
    • it’s not what “I” did
    • “I” have decided to follow Jesus
    • “I” invited Jesus into my heart
    • “I” gave my life to Jesus
    • as opposed to...
    • “I” only answered the Holy Spirit’s call to new birth
Do we overcome sin by proper: Outlet, Understanding, Technique, Environment
We overcome sin by allowing God to save us when His Spirit convicts & calls us
VICTORY OVER SIN IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THOSE IN ADAM
  • v6 in Adam we were enslaved to sin & death had dominion over us
    • think of the worst crime ever committed that you know about
    • know this, that is unusual because people are not as bad as they could be
    • righteousness is contrary to a lost persons nature, they won’t choose that
    • when lost people do good things remember that “doing righteousness to God” was not the primary intention...self-glory is still SIN
    • Romans 8:5For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and [a]pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and [b]seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit. 6Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that [c]comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever]. 7[That is] because the mind of the flesh [with its carnal thoughts and purposes] is hostile to God, for it does not submit itself to God's Law; indeed it cannot.
    • Lost Man CANNOT please God
  • v9 in Christ (born again) victory over sin is inevitable & death has no dominion over us
    • 1 Jn 3:4Everyone who commits (practices) sin is guilty of lawlessness; for [that is what] sin is, lawlessness (the breaking, violating of God's law by transgression or neglect--being unrestrained and unregulated by His commands and His will).
    •     5You know that He appeared in visible form and became Man to take away [upon Himself] sins, and in Him there is no sin [[a]essentially and forever].
    •     6No one who abides in Him [who lives and remains [b]in communion with and in obedience to Him--deliberately, knowingly, and [c]habitually] commits (practices) sin. No one who [habitually] sins has either seen or known Him [recognized, perceived, or understood Him, or has had an experiential acquaintance with Him].
    •     7[d]Boys (lads), let no one deceive and lead you astray. He who practices righteousness [who is upright, conforming to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action, living a consistently conscientious life] is righteous, even as He is righteous.
    •     8[But] he who commits sin [who practices evildoing] is of the devil [takes his character from the evil one], for the devil has sinned (violated the divine law) from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done].
    •     9No one born (begotten) of God [deliberately, knowingly, and [e]habitually] practices sin, for God's nature abides in him [His principle of life, the divine sperm, remains permanently within him]; and he cannot practice sinning because he is born (begotten) of God.
    • not communicating sinlessness “in this life”
    • makes us uncomfortable because “once saved always saved” means people won’t continually strive for righteousness.
    • sanctification is NOT about what WE strive for
    • sanctification is ABOUT what CHRIST has done and applied to our life
    • the SOURCE of our righteousness is JESUS CHRIST
    • keep Him in the forefront of our mind guarantees us victory over sin
VICTORY OVER SIN IS GUARANTEED BY THE WORK OF CHRIST APPLIED TO BELIEVERS
  • Three Types of Hope
    • God has declared those with a relationship with Jesus as “righteous” (He has put us in a right relationship with Himself) Romans 3 (Freedom from the PENALTY of sin.)
    • our hope that we will be delivered from the PRESENCE of sin. V5 (that is a future hope, it is not now) (we are IN CHRIST & will have a resurrection like His) Eph 1:3 May blessing (praise, laudation, and eulogy) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!4Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as His own] in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love. 5For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will [[a]because it pleased Him and was His kind intent]--6[So that we might be] to the praise and the commendation of His glorious grace (favor and mercy), which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In Him we have redemption (deliverance and salvation) through His blood, the remission (forgiveness) of our offenses (shortcomings and trespasses), in accordance with the riches and the generosity of His gracious favor, 8Which He lavished upon us in every kind of wisdom and understanding (practical insight and prudence), 9Making known to us the mystery (secret) of His will (of His plan, of His purpose). [And it is this:] In accordance with His good pleasure (His merciful intention) which He had previously purposed and set forth in [b]Him, 10[He planned] for the maturity of the times and the climax of the ages to unify all things and head them up and consummate them in Christ, [both] things in heaven and things on the earth.                                     (If you are married who is your NEXT OF KIN?....ur mother or ur spouse? YOUR SPOUSE!/                                                                                   illustration of our relationship of being IN Christ:/                                               all that is His is ours
    • v6 we don’t have to “serve” sin & 7 we died IN CHRIST and are freed from sin We have a RIGHT NOW HOPE because v10 because we are IN CHRIST and He lives unto God, WE LIVE UNTO GOD. (that was earned for us by Christ, not anything we did ourself)
IMPERATIVE
  • V11 consider yourselves also dead to sin & your relation to it broken
    • remember your victory we have in Christ
    • reminds us that Christ has won & we are IN HIM
    • 13th Amendment Abolish Slavery
      • it’s the law you’re not a slave but every fiber of your body knows nothing else
  • v12 don’t let sin rule as a king your short-lived bodies, making you yield to its cravings
    • as a slave remember you are free and don’t act like a slave any more
    • we were born as a slave to sin but don’t act like that any more
  • v13 don’t continue offering or yielding your bodily members to sin as tools of wickedness, GIVE YOURSELF TO GOD
    • we are a weapon of righteousness not one of unrighteousness
    • every time we attend worship, singing, praying, preaching, teaching...it reminds us of what is true about us!
    • FREEDOM & VICTORY
  • v14 for sin shall not exert dominion over you, since now you are not under Law as slaves, but under grace as subjects of God’s favor & mercy
    • don’t live there any more
    • not works righteousness
    • not free from the Law, we are now FREE TO OBEY
    • our “nature” has been changed
WHAT DO WE DO? IN CHRIST
  • consider it to be true of us
  • don’t give yourself to camp we don’t belong to anymore
  • give yourself to the ones to whom you belong
When we nail a pet sin to the cross it will scream out at first, but leave it there & eventually it will DIE!

THE TRUTH ABOUT HATE & LOVE
John 3:15-20
CBC 3/11/2012 SM
One Hollywood actor made the statement that homosexuality was, “unnatural”...
That statement, according to the media is a statement of “hate”...
Is It?
In 2012 we are applying Biblical Thinking to current issues...
What does the Bible say about Hate & Love?
LOVE
John 3:15 In order that everyone who believes in Him [who cleaves to Him, trusts Him, and relies on Him] may [b]not perish, but have eternal life and [actually] live forever!
16For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten ([c]unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.
17For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him.
18He who believes in Him [who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him] is not judged [he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgment; for him there is no rejection, no condemnation--he incurs no damnation]; but he who does not believe (cleave to, rely on, trust in Him) is judged already [he has already been convicted and has already received his sentence] because he has not believed in and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ's name.]
19The [basis of the] judgment (indictment, the test by which men are judged, the ground for the sentence) lies in this: the Light has come into the world, and people have loved the darkness rather than and more than the Light, for their works (deeds) were evil.(B)
20For every wrongdoer hates (loathes, detests) the Light, and will not come out into the Light but shrinks from it, lest his works (his deeds, his activities, his conduct) be exposed and reproved.
  • GOD LOVED (25 agapao) THE WORLD INCLUDING ITS INHABITANTS v16
    • greatly loved
    • dearly prized
    • proved His love by allowing His only Son to die on a cross
    • Jesus didn’t come the first time to pass judgment (that’s the 2nd time)
    • Jesus wants people to be safe & sound
    • Devil wants to steal, kill & destroy people
  • PEOPLE HAVE LOVED (25 agapao) THE DARKNESS v19
    • Darkness blinds
    • 1 Jn 2:11But he who hates (detests, despises) his brother [[a]in Christ] is in darkness and walking (living) in the dark; he is straying and does not perceive or know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
    • Blindness affects the heart/mind
    • Eph. 4:17So this I say and solemnly testify in [the name of] the Lord [as in His presence], that you must no longer live as the heathen (the Gentiles) do in their perverseness [in the folly, vanity, and emptiness of their souls and the futility] of their minds.
    •     18Their [a]moral understanding is darkened and their reasoning is beclouded. [They are] alienated (estranged, self-banished) from the life of God [with no share in it; this is] because of the ignorance (the want of knowledge and perception, the willful blindness) that is [b]deep-seated in them, due to their hardness of heart [to the insensitiveness of their moral nature].
    • Darkened hearts transform wise people into fools
    • Romans 1:21Because when they knew and recognized Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile and [a]godless in their thinking [with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning, and stupid speculations] and their senseless minds were darkened.
    •     22Claiming to be wise, they became fools [professing to be smart, they made simpletons of themselves].
    •     23And by them the glory and majesty and excellence of the immortal God were exchanged for and represented by images, resembling mortal man and birds and beasts and reptiles.
    •     24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their [own] hearts to sexual impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves [abandoning them to the degrading power of sin],
    •     25Because they exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, Who is blessed forever! Amen (so be it).(A)
    •     26For this reason God gave them over and abandoned them to vile affections and degrading passions. For their women exchanged their natural function for an unnatural and abnormal one,
    •     27And the men also turned from natural relations with women and were set ablaze (burning out, consumed) with lust for one another--men committing shameful acts with men and suffering in their own [b]bodies and personalities the inevitable consequences and penalty of their wrong-doing and going astray, which was [their] fitting retribution.
    •     28And so, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God or approve of Him or consider Him worth the knowing, God gave them over to a base and condemned mind to do things not proper or decent but loathsome,
    •     29Until they were filled (permeated and saturated) with every kind of unrighteousness, iniquity, grasping and covetous greed, and malice. [They were] full of envy and jealousy, murder, strife, deceit and treachery, ill will and cruel ways. [They were] secret backbiters and gossipers,
    •     30Slanderers, hateful to and hating God, full of insolence, arrogance, [and] boasting; inventors of new forms of evil, disobedient and undutiful to parents.
    •     31[They were] without understanding, conscienceless and faithless, heartless and loveless [and] merciless.
    •     32Though they are fully aware of God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them themselves but approve and applaud others who practice them.
Is it a “Hate Crime” to call a sin a sin? NO
hate crime is a legal category used to describe a bias-motivated violence (assault, injury & murder) on the basis of certain personal characteristics: different appearance, color, nationality, language, religion, sexual preference
Is it “Hate Speech” to name particular sins in a sermon as they are listed in the Bible?
NO. In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group.
The Christian’s mandate, as will be seen in scripture, is to LOVE the individual, regardless of their choice of sin.
We are all sinners...
Romans 3:10As it is written, None is righteous, just and truthful and upright and conscientious, no, not one.
  • GOD HATES THE WORK OF THEM THAT TURN ASIDE FROM THE RIGHT PATH
Psalm 101:3I will set no base or wicked thing before my eyes. I hate the work of them who turn aside [from the right path]; it shall not grasp hold of me.
    • God hates every false way
    • Ps 119:104Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
    • God hates vain thoughts Ps 119:113
    • God hates lying Ps 119:163
    • God hates unhealthy pride (LGBT Pride) [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) or a Arrogant Prideful Preacher (It’s not the person, it’s the pride)!
    • God hates shedding of innocent blood (abortion, murder...)
    • God hates manufacturing of wicked thoughts and plans
    • God hates swift running to evil
    • God hates spreading discord among his church (Prov 6:16-19)
    • God hates evil, pride, arrogance, evil way, perverted & twisted speech Prov 8:13
    • God hates robbery & wrong with violence
    • God hates worship of fake gods
    • God hates empty ceremony Amos 5:21
    • He doesn’t single out any particular group...GOD HATES SIN, BUT LOVES SINNERS ENOUGH TO SEND HIS SON TO DIE FOR THEM
Romans 5:8But God shows and clearly proves His [own] love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for us.
  • PEOPLE HATE JESUS, THE FATHER & THEIR FAMILY (CHRISTIANS WHO STAND FOR THE TRUTH)
John 15:20 Remember that I told you, A servant is not greater than his master [is not superior to him]. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word and obeyed My teachings, they will also keep and obey yours.
21But they will do all this to you [inflict all this suffering on you] because of [your bearing] My name and on My account, for they do not know or understand the One Who sent Me.
22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin [would be blameless]; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23Whoever hates Me also hates My Father.
24If I had not done (accomplished) among them the works which no one else ever did, they would not be guilty of sin. But [the fact is] now they have both seen [these works] and have hated both Me and My Father.
25But [this is so] that the word written in their Law might be fulfilled, They hated Me without a cause.(A)
26But when the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, Whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who comes (proceeds) from the Father, He [Himself] will testify regarding Me.
27But you also will testify and be My witnesses, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
CONCL:
Psalm 34:21 Evil shall cause the death of the wicked; and they who hate the just and righteous shall be held guilty and shall be condemned.
* Christians have a “commission” to reach them with the “Good News” that God loves them & Jesus died for them & they can be transformed.(not die wicked & condemned)
Psalm 97:10 O you who love the Lord, hate evil; He preserves the lives of His saints (the children of God), He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
HATE EVIL, NOT PEOPLE
Matt. 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
  • Do we hate those who hate us? NO. Our instructions are to:
    • Love
    • Bless
    • Do good
    • Pray for
We hate the sin, evil & those things that make people fools, but we love the person.

PASSING JUDGMENT
ROMANS 14:10-12
CBC 3/4/2012
A scripture you hear quoted a lot by both Christians & Non-Christians...
“Judge not that you be not judged”
Short version - “don’t judge me”
Is that correct?
is that genuine love, not to judge???
10Why do you criticize and pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you look down upon or despise your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.
11For it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God [acknowledge Him to His honor and to His praise].(A)
12And so each of us shall give an account of himself [give an answer in reference to judgment] to God.
What about those scriptures that call for judgment?
WE USE JUDGMENT ALL THE TIME
  • what is it we don’t judge?
    • we judge if we can make it to church and back on how much gas is in the car
    • we judge if the toothpaste we’re buying will do the job or not
    • we judge if the clothes we put on are suitable or not
    • we judge people...are the compatible enough to be my friend, good doctor.....
    • and the list goes on & on & on
    • what happens if we don’t make judgments?
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “MAKING” A JUDGMENT & “PASSING” JUDGMENT
  • Passing Judgement
    • look beyond what a person says or does into the very heart of the person as though you have the ability to discern:
      • why they do what they do
      • the foundation from which it is being done (i.e. whether they are genuinely saved or not)
  • Making a Judgment
    • person is not a good salesman, I want another salesman
    • Passing Judgment - this person is not a good salesman b/c his heart is wicked, his intentions are wicked, he’s trying to intentionally harm me, and take advantage of me, and I know this because I see what’s in his soul.
  • the better we know people the more likely we are to pass judgment on them
    • we assume we know not only the wrong action, but where it came from
    • what the intention of the heart was
WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO “PASS” JUDGEMENT
  • We don’t have the authority
    • v10 why pass judgment on your brother
    • that’s an “equal” relationship
    • passing judgment is the act of a “superior” not a brother
    • Phil. 2:1-41 SO BY whatever [appeal to you there is in our mutual dwelling in Christ, by whatever] strengthening and consoling and encouraging [our relationship] in Him [affords], by whatever persuasive [a]incentive there is in love, by whatever participation in the [Holy] Spirit [we share], and by whatever depth of affection and compassionate sympathy,
    •     2Fill up and complete my joy by living in harmony and being of the same mind and one in purpose, having the same love, being in full accord and of one harmonious mind and intention.
    •     3Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves].
    •     4Let each of you esteem and look upon and be concerned for not [merely] his own interests, but also each for the interests of others.
    • That’s the relationship we have with our brothers & sisters in Christ
    • Rom. 12:10Love one another with brotherly affection [as members of one family], giving precedence and showing honor to (out do) one another.
    • Rom. 12:16Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.
    • Rom. 14:13Then let us no more criticize and blame and pass judgment on one another, but rather decide and endeavor never to put a stumbling block or an obstacle or a hindrance in the way of a brother.
    • Rom. 15:5Now may the God Who gives the power of patient endurance (steadfastness) and Who supplies encouragement, grant you to live in such mutual harmony and such full sympathy with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
    • Rom 15:7Welcome and receive [to your hearts] one another, then, even as Christ has welcomed and received you, for the glory of God.
    • We are brothers & sisters in Christ, and the act of “Passing Judgment” is to take a position of superiority over another...THAT’S SIN!
    • The one who has the authority is GOD...and we a’int Him.
  • We Lack the Insight To Pass Judgment
    • we don’t know the heart of another
    • we don’t know if it was an error or on purpose
    • we don’t even know our own heart...how can we know another’s?
    • 1 Sam. 16:7But the Lord said to Samuel, Look not on his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
    • Jer. 17:9The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]?
    •     10I the Lord search the mind, I try the heart, even to give to every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.
    • Heb. 4:13And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, naked and defenseless to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.
  • We Lack the Ability to Pass Judgment
    • You did it to be because you are evil
    • I did it to you because I made a mistake
    • we know they are bad, but we give ourself the benefit of the doubt
    • Husbands & Wives listen to this...
  • We Lack the Purity to Pass Judgment
    • everyone has a weak point(s)
    • everyone has a strong point(s)
    • none of us are “righteous” (do right acts every single time)
    • we will stand before the righteous Judge for passing judgment on our brother
    • 7 judgments
      • on earth
      • beast & false prophet
      • gentile nations
      • Israel
      • Satan
      • unbelievers
      • believers (not for sin, but for our behavior) don’t expect to make 100
  • We Lack the Occasion to Pass Judgment
    • that’s when our brother/sister stands before Christ
    • we a’int Christ who will judge the living & the dead
    • blasphemy to get in His territory
CONTEXT:
eating or not eating meat sacrificed to an idol
WHAT ARE WE COMMANDED TO DO?
  • Rebuke Sin
    • Matt. 18:15 “If your brother wrongs you...(SINS against you) not has a different preference
    • only church body, after proper procedure can withdraw fellowship, but not out of the Kingdom if they are truly saved
    • I Cor 5: man shacking up with his stepmother...
    • 9I wrote you in my [previous] letter not to associate [closely and habitually] with unchaste (impure) people--
    •     10Not [meaning of course that you must] altogether shun the immoral people of this world, or the greedy graspers and cheats and thieves or idolaters, since otherwise you would need to get out of the world and human society altogether!
    •     11But now I write to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of [Christian] brother if he is known to be guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolater [whose soul is devoted to any object that usurps the place of God], or is a person with a foul tongue [railing, abusing, reviling, slandering], or is a drunkard or a swindler or a robber. [No] you must not so much as eat with such a person.
    •     12What [business] of mine is it and what right have I to judge outsiders? Is it not those inside [the church] upon whom you are to pass disciplinary judgment [passing censuring sentence on them as the facts require]?
    •     13God alone sits in judgment on those who are outside. Drive out that wicked one from among you [expel him from your church].
    • It’s not about PERSONAL PREFERENCES, it’s about SIN as documented by God’s Word!
    • hold the “preferences” up to the Word & don’t put them in the place of Biblical essentials
    • Essentials hold us together as a body
    • Preferences gives us “flavor”
    • when preferences differ it puts us through the EXERCISE OF “LOVE”
    • Heresy & Sin must be called out & held to the light of scripture (still not passing judgment)
