KINGDOM MATTERS
Matthew 3:1-12
CBC 2/12/2012
B/C we have a limited amount of time on this earth...
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
God’s desire for us is that we set our priorities to what really matters
TEXT:
1IN THOSE days there appeared John the Baptist, preaching in the Wilderness (Desert) of Judea
2And saying, Repent ([a]think differently; change your mind, regretting your sins and changing your conduct), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3This is he who was mentioned by the prophet Isaiah when he said, The voice of one crying in the wilderness (shouting in the desert), Prepare the road for the Lord, make His highways straight (level, [b]direct).(A)
4This same John's garments were made of camel's hair, and he wore a leather girdle about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.(B)
    5Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the country round about the Jordan went out to him;
6And they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins.
7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee and escape from the wrath and indignation [of God against disobedience] that is coming?
    8Bring forth fruit that is consistent with repentance [let your lives prove your change of heart];
9And do not presume to say to yourselves, We have Abraham for our forefather; for I tell you, God is able to raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones!
10And already the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11I indeed baptize you [c]in (with) water [d]because of repentance [that is, because of your [e]changing your minds for the better, heartily amending your ways, with abhorrence of your past sins]. But He Who is coming after me is mightier than I, Whose sandals I am not worthy or fit to take off or carry; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12His winnowing fan (shovel, fork) is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear out and clean His threshing floor and gather and store His wheat in His barn, but the chaff He will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.
  • JOHN THE BAPTIST REMINDS US OF THE URGENCY OF TELLING THE WORLD ABOUT JESUS
    • V2 Repent ([a]think differently; change your mind, regretting your sins and changing your conduct), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand
    • most important thing in our life is “SALVATION”
      • when Holy Spirit convicts us of our sinful condition we must repent
      • repentance is turning & going a new direction
      • we must stop fighting God & surrender our life to Him
      • when we do we become His and not our own
      • as a member of His family He has plans for our life
    • after our salvation through Jesus Christ, we are to live for God by serving Him
      • we must follow our “calling”
      • God equips us with all we need
      • spiritual gifts
      • natural talents
      • John the Baptist was fulfilling his calling so that people were being led to Jesus, SO SHOULD WE
      • everybody didn’t understand John
        • he didn’t dress like everybody else
        • he didn’t eat what everybody else ate
        • he didn’t do life like it had always been done
        • he was misunderstood and made some folks nervous
    • after our salvation through Jesus Christ, we must be COMMITTED
      • John was committed to his call
      • John wasn’t committed to popularity
      • John knew what mattered
      • He wasn’t playing by man’s rules and traditions
      • He was committed to what God wanted him to do first
      • There is a myth that our younger generation isn’t “committed”
      • truth is, they are the most “committed” generation to date
      • the error comes is that they are overly committed to things of temporary nature instead of making the things that are eternal Priority #1
      • We as God’s people must avoid the pitfalls of improper priorities
      • things of the world should never come before things God has for us to do
    • after our salvation through Jesus Christ, we must be CONCERNED V7-12
      • part of John’s message had to do with being a fraud
      • Pharisees & Sadducees were so busy being religious they couldn’t see the truth
      • John was concerned for them & the ones that would follow them
      • He told them through Jesus they would be saved from the fires of Hell
      • John also explained the followers of Christ would not only be baptized with water, but by the Holy Spirit
      • With God’s Spirit indwelling our being, He guides, leads and convicts us as we make decisions for life
      • The Holy Spirit is our source of power and strength we need to stand up for the Lord and what He has called us to accomplish for Him
Conclusion:
  1. Our lives must bear fruits for Christ.
  2. We must follow our calling,
  3. be committed to our calling, and
  4. be concerned about our calling for the sake of others.
The invitation is simple.
If you are saved, do what God has called you to do the best you can possibly do.
If you are not doing all you are called to do, repent to God and get to work.
Matthew 3:12  His winnowing fan (shovel, fork) is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear out and clean His threshing floor and gather and store His wheat in His barn, but the chaff He will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.
  1. If you are here without Jesus, let me remind you of something.
I have just read to you what will happen in the end.
If you die without Jesus you will be separated out.
Jesus separates the saved from the lost.
The saved will spend eternity in Heaven, the lost in Hell.
If you died to today where would your destination be?
