SUPPORTING OUR AUTHORITIES
ROMANS 13:1-7 (5-7)
CBC 2/19/2012 SN
Our ultimate hope does not rest on our civil authorities
our hope is in God
God has ordained civil authority and requires us to give them their due
1LET EVERY person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God's appointment.(A)
2Therefore he who resists and sets himself up against the authorities resists what God has appointed and arranged [in divine order]. And those who resist will bring down judgment upon themselves [receiving the penalty due them].
3For civil authorities are not a terror to [people of] good conduct, but to [those of] bad behavior. Would you have no dread of him who is in authority? Then do what is right and you will receive his approval and commendation.
4For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, [you should dread him and] be afraid, for he does not bear and wear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant to execute His wrath (punishment, vengeance) on the wrongdoer.
5Therefore one must be subject, not only to avoid God's wrath and escape punishment, but also as a matter of principle and for the sake of conscience.
6For this same reason you pay taxes, for [the civil authorities] are official servants under God, devoting themselves to attending to this very service.
7Render to all men their dues. [Pay] taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, and honor to whom honor is due.
  • OUR SUPPORT OF AUTHORITY FLOWS DIRECTLY FROM OUR SUBMISSION TO CHRIST
    • V4 Civil authority is God’s servant
      • if we do wrong we should be afraid...of God’s wrath
  • 4 Commands (first THREE)
    • v1 be subject
    • v3 do good
    • v4 be afraid
      • our culture seems to flaunt it’s rejection to authority
      • v5 be in subjection...for sake of conscience
      • believers primary motivation for doing good is not fear of a citation or arrest...
      • primary motivation for believer....a good conscience
      • ungodly from doing wrong...wrath of God, Law Enforcement
      • obedience for the child of God is better than sacrifice
      • child-raising:
        • start out w/ fear of the rod of correction
        • grow into obedience out of conscience sake
  • the more submissive to Christ, the better citizens we will be
    • do we live with the mindset of “what we can get away with?”
      • how much over the speed limit can I go and get by with it
      • we can’t “get away with” anything with Christ
      • do we do what we do to glorify God?
        • pay taxes
        • drive
        • interact in society
  • We as believers are not to just “appear” submissive, but BE submissive
  • OUR WILLING SUPPORT OF AUTHORITY INCLUDES JOYFUL GIVING
    • V6 For this same reason you pay taxes, for [the civil authorities] are official servants under God, devoting themselves to attending to this very service.
    • is “hating” to pay, & “complaining” about paying Godly attributes?
    • is it a good Christian testimony?
    • are we more concerned about our taxes than our own SIN?
    • Phil 2:14Do all things without grumbling and faultfinding and complaining [[a]against God] and [b]questioning and doubting [among yourselves],
    •     15That you may show yourselves to be blameless and guiltless, innocent and uncontaminated, children of God without blemish (faultless, unrebukable) in the midst of a crooked and wicked generation [spiritually perverted and perverse], among whom you are seen as bright lights (stars or beacons shining out clearly) in the [dark] world,
    • our happiness & contentment isn’t based on our tax rate, it flows from Christ
    • How will civil government get the tools necessary to protect us??? TAXES
    • what about when the rulers MISUSE the tax money?
      • when in history has that not been true? (none righteous...)
      • Roman government was corrupt
      • Jesus said, “render to Caesar the things the things that are Caesar’s”
      • the Roman’s unjust purposes (tools for crucifixion) ultimately REDEEMED US!!
      • Believers in the early persecuted church had no quarrels in paying taxes, they differed with the government over religion.
      • paying taxes is not against God’s law
  • OUR SUPPORT OF OUR LEADERS IS GIVING THEM THE HONOR AND RESPECT THAT IS DUE
    • 4TH COMMAND - v7 render to all men their dues
    • tax - speaking of property tax
    • revenue - sales tax
    • respect - reverential fear (healthy)
    • honor - esteem or dignity (their correct worth)
    • talk radio is becoming distasteful b/c of the disrespect for those in authority
    • neither should the media pander to them
    • our call is to submit unless they ask us to do something against God
    • we still respect them while we appeal, confront or defy
    • 1 Tim 2:1FIRST OF all, then, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men,
    •     2For kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility, that [outwardly] we may pass a quiet and undisturbed life [and inwardly] a peaceable one in all godliness and reverence and seriousness in every way.
    •     3For such [praying] is good and right, and [it is] pleasing and acceptable to God our Savior,
    •     4Who wishes all men to be saved and [increasingly] to perceive and recognize and discern and know precisely and correctly the [divine] Truth.
    • Do we think we are more perfect in character than our leaders? We’re Not!
    • Our goal should be to share the gospel with them
      • that can’t be done if we continually disrespect them
CONCL:
power of Pharaoh was used to sustain the Jewish people during the famine
Pharaoh (servant of God) was an evil ruler...
we are here to glorify God
