SUPPORTING OUR AUTHORITIES
ROMANS 13:1-7 (5-7)
CBC 2/19/2012 SN
Our ultimate hope does not rest on our civil authorities
our hope is in God
God has ordained civil authority and requires us to give them their due
1LET EVERY person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God's appointment.(A)
2Therefore he who resists and sets himself up against the authorities resists what God has appointed and arranged [in divine order]. And those who resist will bring down judgment upon themselves [receiving the penalty due them].
3For civil authorities are not a terror to [people of] good conduct, but to [those of] bad behavior. Would you have no dread of him who is in authority? Then do what is right and you will receive his approval and commendation.
4For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, [you should dread him and] be afraid, for he does not bear and wear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant to execute His wrath (punishment, vengeance) on the wrongdoer.
5Therefore one must be subject, not only to avoid God's wrath and escape punishment, but also as a matter of principle and for the sake of conscience.
6For this same reason you pay taxes, for [the civil authorities] are official servants under God, devoting themselves to attending to this very service.
7Render to all men their dues. [Pay] taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, and honor to whom honor is due.
  • OUR SUPPORT OF AUTHORITY FLOWS DIRECTLY FROM OUR SUBMISSION TO CHRIST
    • V4 Civil authority is God’s servant
      • if we do wrong we should be afraid...of God’s wrath
  • 4 Commands (first THREE)
    • v1 be subject
    • v3 do good
    • v4 be afraid
      • our culture seems to flaunt it’s rejection to authority
      • v5 be in subjection...for sake of conscience
      • believers primary motivation for doing good is not fear of a citation or arrest...
      • primary motivation for believer....a good conscience
      • ungodly from doing wrong...wrath of God, Law Enforcement
      • obedience for the child of God is better than sacrifice
      • child-raising:

        • grow into obedience out of conscience sake
  • the more submissive to Christ, the better citizens we will be
    • do we live with the mindset of “what we can get away with?”

    • How will civil government get the tools necessary to protect us??? TAXES

  • OUR SUPPORT OF OUR LEADERS IS GIVING THEM THE HONOR AND RESPECT THAT IS DUE
    • 4TH COMMAND - v7 render to all men their dues
    • tax - speaking of property tax
    • revenue - sales tax
    • respect - reverential fear (healthy)

    •     4Who wishes all men to be saved and [increasingly] to perceive and recognize and discern and know precisely and correctly the [divine] Truth.
    • Do we think we are more perfect in character than our leaders? We’re Not!
    • Our goal should be to share the gospel with them
      • that can’t be done if we continually disrespect them
CONCL:
power of Pharaoh was used to sustain the Jewish people during the famine
Pharaoh (servant of God) was an evil ruler...

WHY ARE WE LOSING THE NEXT GENERATION?
Ephesians 6:1-4
CBC 2/26/2012
  • varying statistics but we are losing between 75 & 88% of our young people
    • usually by the end of their freshman year in college
    • Glen Shultz - kingdom education/ 2002 SBC council on the family
  • Birthrate in America has fallen below Replacement Rate
    • replacement rate is 2.1 children per family
    • we are at 1.9 children/family
    • France is 1.5 children/family
    • our culture is dying one generation at the time
    • North African Muslims & Arab Muslims in France have a birthrate of 6.0 children/family
      • in 2 generations France will be a Muslim nation by numbers alone
  • The goal Americans shoot for...
    • one boy & one girl...2 children
    • unwritten rule...try for a third if you got 2 of the same kind 1st two trys
  • Sad Testimony
    • Americans exhibit mocking behavior when a lady comes in the church door with six children
      • “doesn’t she know where those kids are coming from?”
  • Put this together now...
    • we lose 75% by end of Freshmen year of college
    • we average 2 children/family
    • currently takes two Christian families in this generation to get one Christian into the next.
    • solution: we will increase the numbers by “evangelism”
    • Fact: it takes 43 Baptist to reach one lost person & bring them to Jesus
    • Christianity in America is dying one generation at the time
      • one home at the time
  • Research as to why...
    • intermarriage rates as believers marry nonbelievers & lose the faith
    • low birth rates
    • Christian education in the home
OUR SOLUTION:
  • hire Youth Pastors to make it better
    • Alan Reed, “Raising the Bar” “Over the last 30 years we have seen the largest increase in the number of professional youth ministers, youth ministry degrees being handed out and para church organizations designed to reach youth and we have seen the greatest decline in youth baptisms ever.”
WHAT IS THE BIBLICAL SOLUTION?
* TEXT -1CHILDREN, OBEY your parents in the Lord [as His representatives], for this is just and right.
2Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother--this is the first commandment with a promise--(A)
3That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.
4Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.
  • God has a plan for multi generational faithfulness
    • that plan is the family
    • the goal of many youth ministries
      • to evangelize teenagers, disciple them and equip them to evangelize other teenagers
      • Problem #1: parents never mentioned
      • Problem #2: not youth ministries job
      • Who’s job to evangelize children? Church? No, Daddy & Momma
      • Who’s job to disciple children? Church? No, Daddy & Momma
      • Proper Mission Statement for Youth Ministry...
        • “We exist to equip and assist parents as they do what God called them to do and not the Church.”
  • THE HOME IS CENTRAL IN THE EVANGELISM & DISCIPLESHIP OF THE NEXT GENERATION
    • why are families not functioning biblically?
    • one reason is for 30 years the church has told the home,...
      • “We are trained professionals. Please don’t try this at home. You don’t understand your kids. Your kids don’t like you. Trust the Youth Ministry. Just drop them off now.”
    • Our goal is to think and act biblically about the next generation
  • CHILDREN OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD FOR THIS IS RIGHT
    • context: paragraph before it “Husbands, love your wives.../wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.”
    • it actually begins in Eph. 5:15
      • 3 contrasts
      • 3 commands
      • 3 contexts
  • 3 CONTRASTS
    • #1 -15Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people), 16Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil.
    • #2 -17Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is.
    • #3 -18And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery (Indulgence in sensual pleasures); but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit.
  • 3 COMMANDS (How do you know someone is living the Spirit filled life? From vs18 & 3rd contrast THEY’RE NOT SITTING AROUND DRINKING COLD BEER)
    • #1 -19Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices [[a]and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord,
      • a worshipful person is controlled by the Spirit of God
    • #2 -20At all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.
      • a prayerful & thankful person is controlled by God’s Spirit
    • #3 -21Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
      • a person who submits to proper biblical authority in their life is controlled by the Spirit of God.
  • 3 CONTEXTS
    • #1 -22Wives, be subject (be submissive and adapt yourselves) to your own husbands as [a service] to the Lord. 28Even so husbands should love their wives as [being in a sense] their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.
    • #2 - 1CHILDREN, OBEY your parents in the Lord [as His representatives], for this is just and right. 2Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother--this is the first commandment with a promise--(A) 3That all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth.4Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.
      • A Child who is submissive to their parents is a child filled with the Spirit of God
      • to lead a child to be “Spirit Filled”, they must be lead toward mom & dad, not the Youth Pastor
      • how much they submit to the Youth Pastor is not a biblical indicator of the measure of their “Filling of the Holy Spirit”
      • to know the Spiritual Temperature of a young person look at how submissive they are to the authority of their parents, their spiritual authority.
    • #3 -5Servants (slaves), be obedient to those who are your physical masters, having respect for them and eager concern to please them, in singleness of motive and with all your heart, as [service] to Christ [Himself]-- 6Not in the way of eye-service [as if they were watching you] and only to please men, but as servants (slaves) of Christ, doing the will of God heartily and with your whole soul; 7Rendering service readily with goodwill, as to the Lord and not to men,
THE HOME IS CENTRAL IN THE USE OF THE 5TH COMMANDMENT
  • 2Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother--this is the first commandment with a promise--
    • 5th Commandment is the 1st of the horizontal commandments
      • first 4 vertical to God
      • next 6 horizontal to our fellow man
    • #1 on horizontal list says most important thing a child can be taught is to honor their father and mother.
    • this is the first commandment that comes with a PROMISE
    • 5th commandment not for the individual child but for the community of faith
    • Deut 6:4Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord [the only Lord].5And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might. 6And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then] 7You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.
    • PARENTS - EVANGELIZE & DISCIPLE YOUR CHILDREN
    • this doesn’t mean “INCLUDING MORE PARENTS IN THE CHURCH YOUTH MINISTRY” either
    • God’s instruction are simple:
      • you are my people in a pagan land where they worship pagan gods
      • multiply greatly (have a boat load of kids)
      • evangelize & disciple those kids in your home so they don’t look like the culture around them
THE HOME IS CENTRAL BECAUSE OF WHAT GOD SAYS
  • 4Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord.
    • FATHERS, FATHERS, FATHERS.....
    • how do we get more men involved in church...?
    • this is God’s answer to that question
    • pretty clear - Father’s disciple your children
      • so that your children DON’T LOOK LIKE THE CULTURE AROUND THEM
      • today fathers are PUSHING their kids INTO A CULTURE that takes them further from God instead of CLOSER
        • when is sports practice and games held???????Wed. & Sun.
        • when you keep them out of church on Sunday and drink beer in front of them while on recreation instead....what does that say?
        • when you don’t “LOVE YOUR WIFE” & you do your own thing, what are you teaching your children?
        • GOD EXPECTS MORE FROM YOU DAD, & IS HOLDING YOU ACCOUNTABLE!
CONCL:
  • If Dad is not equipped to evangelize & disciple his children the YOUTH MINISTRY of the church needs to stand ready with the necessary information and tools to get Dad & Mom the help they need TO DO THEIR JOB!
  • Nehemiah Institute, Barna Research Group & National Study of Youth and Religion:
    • less than 10% of professing Christian teens operate from a biblical worldview
    • less than 5% are theologically born again
    • our churches will continue to LOOK BIG, but an overwhelming majority of members will not be Christ followers
  • WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO?
    • get a biblical view of children
    • support a biblical mission statement for our Youth Ministry
    • don’t saddle our Youth Pastor with the responsibility of evangelizing and discipling YOUR CHILDREN! Allow him to assist you in DOING YOUR JOB AS HANDED TO YOU BY GOD.

POST VALENTINES DAY
Ephesians 4:25-32
CBC 2/19/2012
OK, we’re past Valentine’s Day...
now we need something more substantial than flowers & chocolate for a healthy marriage
here it is in black and white
25Therefore, rejecting all falsity and being done now with it, let everyone express the truth with his neighbor, for we are all parts of one body and members one of another.(A)
26When angry, do not sin; do not ever let your wrath (your exasperation, your fury or indignation) last until the sun goes down.
27Leave no [such] room or foothold for the devil [give no opportunity to him].
28Let the thief steal no more, but rather let him be industrious, making an honest living with his own hands, so that he may be able to give to those in need.
29Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God's favor) to those who hear it.
30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God's own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).
31Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).
32And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.
  • v25 “...express (speak) the TRUTH...”
  • V26 “When angry, do not sin; do not ever let your wrath (your exasperation, your fury or indignation) last until the sun goes down.
    • what does it mean, “when angry, do not sin;”?
    • first of all it’s a sin to let your anger last until the sun goes down...
    • why?
    • we hold out our anger b/c we want you to know we’re angry
    • we want to be vindicated by the suffering you endure as the result of our anger
* v27 that behavior gives Satan a foothold, (something he can hold on to)
    • that means HE OWNS YOU at that point
    • the only one who has the right to be angry is God the Righteous
    • our anger is a form of blasphemy
  • v28 Let the thief steal no more, but rather let him be industrious, making an honest living with his own hands, so that he may be able to give to those in need.
    • that’s called TANGIBLE REPENTANCE
    • OT example: law was, if you steal my ox, you have to give me my ox back (or cash value), plus one of yours
    • saying I’m sorry is an apology but not evidence of repentance
    • Repentance is a change in attitude that leads to change in behavior
    • ILL: man speaks to wife in a nasty, vicious & vile sort of way/
      • apology is appropriate, but not tangible repentance
      • now speak Appropriate words opposite of nasty, vicious and vile
  • v29 Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God's favor) to those who hear it.
    • don’t twist the scripture “speak the truth” as an excuse to say nasty, vicious and hurtful words about someone (that’s SIN)
    • EXCUSE: “Well I just speak my mind”
      • that’s the problem
      • instead speak the “Mind of Christ”
  • v 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God's own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).
    • that’s what we do with “trash” talk
  • v31 Let all bitterness and indignation and wrath (passion, rage, bad temper) and resentment (anger, animosity) and quarreling (brawling, clamor, contention) and slander (evil-speaking, abusive or blasphemous language) be banished from you, with all malice (spite, ill will, or baseness of any kind).
    • if we say something true, but it’s “bitter” = SIN
    • if we say something true, but it’s “slanderous” = SIN
    • if we say something true, but it’s “angry” = SIN
  • V32 And become useful and helpful and kind to one another, tenderhearted (compassionate, understanding, loving-hearted), forgiving one another [readily and freely], as God in Christ forgave you.
    • don’t say things that are unkind
    • forgive one another [readily & freely]
    • “forgive & forget” NEWS FLASH: humans not designed to forget
      • couldn’t drive a car one day from the next
      • would wake up wonder who this was in your house
    • forgive - forgo my right to seek vengeance & justice for what you did to me
      • some people are controlled by people who are already dead b/c you won’t forgive them
      • some are controlled by people who live 100’s of miles away b/c you won’t forgive them
        • they’re going about happy as a lark & you can’t sleep at night
        • WHY? B/C your anger needs to be vindicated
        • unforgiveness is like you drinking poison hoping they die
      • unforgiveness is when you bring up the past that you said you had forgiven them of
  • UNCONVERTED (LOST) PEOPLE CANNOT ACCOMPLISH THESE COMMANDS
    • v 25 “Therefore, having put away falsehood...”
      • only through a relationship with Jesus Christ can one do that
    • v 25 “let everyone express the truth with his neighbor, for we are all parts of one body and members one of another.”
      • if we speak harshly of our spouse we have forgotten they are a part of us (members one of another)
      • Eph 5:25-27Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
      •     26So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word,
      •     27That He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such things [that she might be holy and faultless].
        • when we speak evil to our spouse we are inflicting harm upon ourself
      • Eph 5:28-30 Even so husbands should love their wives as [being in a sense] their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.
      •     29For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and carefully protects and cherishes it, as Christ does the church,
      •     30Because we are members (parts) of His body.
        • that also applies to how brothers & sisters in Christ speak to one another
      • Eph 4:11-15And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers.
      •     12His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ's body (the church),
      •     13[That it might develop] until we all attain oneness in the faith and in the comprehension of the [[a]full and accurate] knowledge of the Son of God, that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood (the completeness of personality which is nothing less than the standard height of Christ's own perfection), the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him.
      •     14So then, we may no longer be children, tossed [like ships] to and fro between chance gusts of teaching and wavering with every changing wind of doctrine, [the prey of] the cunning and cleverness of [b]unscrupulous men, [gamblers engaged] in every shifting form of trickery in inventing errors to mislead.
      •     15Rather, let our lives lovingly [c]express truth [in all things, speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly]. Enfolded in love, let us grow up in every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).
    • My wife is not just part of me in marriage
    • Your husband is not just a part of you in marriage
    • he/she is part of the body of Christ as we are a part of the body of Christ
    • if I despise my wife I’m in fact telling Jesus that I despise a part of His body
    • if we despise a brother or sister in Christ we are telling Jesus that we despise a part of His body
    • That’s not a “Behavioral” problem...
    • that’s a WORSHIP DISORDER, a blasphemer in sin & an idolater
    • when we don’t forgive, who is our idol?
      • look in the mirror!
CONCL:
  • Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives
    • you said for better or worse...this might be the worse part, love ur wife
    • sickness or health....this might be the sickness part, love ur wife
    • till death do us part...she’s still breathing, go love ur wife
    • but God doesn’t want me to be unhappy...God killed His own Son, but you’re not supposed to be unhappy? who do you think you are?
    • but I don’t see her as my wife anymore...then love your neighbor as yourself...go love your wife/neighbor
    • but we’re not neighbors b/c I moved out...love her b/c she’s a sister in Christ...go love your wife
    • but she’s mean to me...Jesus said, “Love your enemies”...go love ur wife
    • you have no choice...obey God and love your wife
    • Don’t you realize she is a part of the body of Christ?
      • r u saying, “Jesus, I can’t love you, not this part of you, b/c this part of you is not making me happy right now and since I’m the center of my universe if you want me to love you, you make me happy with this part of you and then maybe I will give you some love b/c your blood shed on the cross is just not enough reason for me.”
    • apply that to a brother or sister in Christ that you’re not happy with right now
    • are we that self-centered?
    • We don’t have a marriage problem in our culture...
    • we don’t have a anger with our brother problem...
    • WE HAVE A WORSHIP DISORDER (Jesus isn’t magnificent enough 4 U!)
