Politics, Government and Biblical Authority: Part 2

Romans 13:1,2

CBC 1/22/2012

Let’s examine our responsibility as Christian Citizens

What does it mean for us to be in “submission” to those authorities God has placed over us?

1LET EVERY person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God's appointment.(A)

2Therefore he who resists and sets himself up against the authorities resists what God has appointed and arranged [in divine order]. And those who resist will bring down judgment upon themselves [receiving the penalty due them].

1689 London Baptist Confession

Chapter 24: Of the Civil Magistrate

1._____ God, the supreme Lord and King of all the world, hath ordained civil magistrates to be under him, over the people, for his own glory and the public good; and to this end hath armed them with the power of the sword, for defence and encouragement of them that do good, and for the punishment of evil doers.
( Romans 13:1-4 )

2._____ It is lawful for Christians to accept and execute the office of a magistrate when called there unto; in the management whereof, as they ought especially to maintain justice and peace, according to the wholesome laws of each kingdom and commonwealth, so for that end they may lawfully now, under the New Testament wage war upon just and necessary occasions.

( 2 Samuel 23:3; Psalms 82:3, 4; Luke 3:14 )

3._____ Civil magistrates being set up by God for the ends aforesaid; subjection, in all lawful things commanded by them, ought to be yielded by us in the Lord, not only for wrath, but for conscience sake; and we ought to make supplications and prayers for kings and all that are in authority, that under them we may live a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty.

( Romans 13:5-7; 1 Peter 2:17; 1 Timothy 2:1, 2 )

  • It is ungodly to think Christians are separate, immune or above civil government
  • we are citizens of a Republic, A Constitutional Representative Republic
  • Republic - to control the Majority strictly, as well as all others among the people, primarily to protect the Individual’s God-given, unalienable rights and therefore for the protection of the rights of the Minority, of all minorities, and the liberties of people in general. The definition of a Republic is: a constitutionally limited government of the representative type, created by a written Constitution -- adopted by the people and changeable (from its original meaning) by them only by its amendment -- with its powers divided between three separate Branches: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. Here the term “the people” means, of course, the electorate.
  • Democracy - cruel form of government that’s not biblical
    • def - Rule by Omnipotent Majority. (if 51% say the other 49% must die...then they must die.) (mob rule) The Individual and any group of Individuals composing any Minority, have no protection against the unlimited power of the Majority. It is a case of Majority-over-Man. Whether it’s a Direct Democracy or a Representative Democracy (Britain’s parliamentary form, representatives are elected and they make the laws and rules without any public input.) The Majority’s power is absolute and unlimited; its decisions are unappealable under the legal system. This opens the door to unlimited Tyranny by Majority
  • we were born out of rebellion & we celebrate it every July 4th
    • in the South our heritage is of the Confederacy that rebelled against the rest of the Union
    • & if you are a Texan we were our own country, who came into the Union voluntarily with the understanding if a time ever came we didn’t like what was going on we would leave and be our own sovereign country again. (that’s why the Texas flag is the only flag that can fly at the same height as the U. S. Flag)
  • Irony: A bunch of rebellious Americans from the South & being preached to by a Texan discussing what.......SUBMISSION TO AUTHORITY.....LOL
    • not just authority that meet certain requirements
    • Acts 17:24The God Who produced and formed the world and all things in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in handmade shrines.
    • 25Neither is He served by human hands, as though He lacked anything, for it is He Himself Whogives life and breath and all things to all [people].(A)
    • 26And He made from one [common origin, one source, one blood] all nations of men to settle on the face of the earth, having definitely determined [their] allotted periods of time and the fixed boundaries of their habitation (their settlements, lands, and abodes),
    • 27So that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after Him and find Him, although He is not far from each one of us.
    • 28For in Him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your [own] poets have said, For we are also His offspring.
    • God sets the boundaries and makes nations and tears them down....
    • Exodus 9:16 But for this very purpose have I let you live (Pharaoh), that I might show you My power, and that My name may be declared throughout all the earth
    • Daniel 2:21 He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding!
    • Psalm 75:6-7 For not from the east nor from the west nor from the south come promotion and lifting up. 7But God is the Judge! He puts down one and lifts up another.
    • Proverbs 21:1THE KING'S heart is in the hand of the Lord, as are the watercourses; He turns it whichever way He wills.
    • ILL: King Neb ate grass like an ox 7 yrs (paranoid schizophrenia) too proud
    • Isaiah 44:28-45:1Who says of Cyrus, He is My shepherd (ruler), and he shall perform all My pleasure and fulfill all My purpose--even saying of Jerusalem, She shall [again] be built, and of the temple, Your foundation shall [again] be laid. 1.THUS SAYS the Lord to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held to subdue nations before him, and I will unarm and ungird the loins of kings to open doors before him, so that gates will not be shut.
      • Cyrus was a very evil pagan king
  • SUBMISSION TO GOD IS ALWAYS BY PROXY (agent or substitute for Him)
    • some believe a person can live their life & be a christian, but just them and God
      • ILL: I can worship just as good in my deer stand, bass I can down there at that church house
      • I can go to church but I don’t have to be a member under the church’s authority
      • that’s not biblical
    • God revealed Himself through His Word as written by “inspired” MEN!
    • Jesus instituted the “CHURCH” b/c man can’t have direct access to God on an “equal” one to one basis.
      • we pray to him as a “member” of His family & the family institution is THE CHURCH of which you must be a member
    • there is no more “revelation” to an individual human being (deer stand or not)
    • submit to God’s Authority in Home, Church, & Civil Government
    • 5th commandment: submission to Parent is submission to God, submission to God by submitting to Church & Government
    • if we don’t we’re NOT SUBMITTING TO GOD & we are rebelling against God v2
    • church exercises discipline on God’s behalf b/c a member supposed to be submitting to God and His ordinances has rebelled...
    • same with home or government
    • “children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right”
    • not obey parents is displeasing & rebellion against the Lord
    • wives submit to husbands as to the Lord...or u are rebelling against God
    • husband loves the wife like Christ loved the church, not to is to rebel against Christ
    • disobedience to the law of the land is rebellion....against God
    • Acts 22:30-23:5But the next day, desiring to know the real cause for which the Jews accused him, he unbound him and ordered the chief priests and all the council (Sanhedrin) to assemble; and he brought Paul down and placed him before them. 1THEN PAUL, gazing earnestly at the council (Sanhedrin), said, Brethren, I have lived before God, doing my duty with a perfectly good conscience until this very day [[a]as a citizen, a true and loyal Jew].
    • 2At this the high priest Ananias ordered those who stood near him to strike him on the mouth.
    • 3Then Paul said to him, God is about to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit as a judge to try me in accordance with the Law, and yet in defiance of the Law you order me to be struck?
    • 4Those who stood near exclaimed, Do you rail at and insult the high priest of God?
    • 5And Paul said, I was not conscious, brethren, that he was a high priest; for the Scripture says, You shall not speak ill of a ruler of your people.
    • that should characterize us as Christians
    • men, heads of households, do you disrespect civil government (break traffic laws, etc.) and expect your wife & children to submit to your authority?...HYPOCRITE! (repent before God, wife & children)
    • when we respond to authority we are still honoring
    • wife who says, “I’ll submit to my husband when he shows me he is worthy of my submission”, never will.
      • there is no human authority worthy of our submission (all are sinners)
      • remember we’re submitting to God by proxy...& God is worthy
      • same for children or citizens of the Republic
      • cannot submit to authority that forbids what God requires or requires what God forbids
      • not allowed, b/c all authority comes from God
      • that’s where the “line” is
      • appeal process, with all respect
      • passive response
        • pray for the out of line authority
        • 1 Tim 2:1-2 FIRST OF all, then, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men, 2For kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility, that [outwardly] we may pass a quiet and undisturbed life [and inwardly] a peaceable one in all godliness and reverence and seriousness in every way.
        • kings heart is in the hand of the LORD, so go to God to change kings heart or “stop” it...
        • be a model of what authority should look like
        • 1 Peter 3:1,2 IN LIKE manner, you married women, be submissive to your own husbands [subordinate yourselves as being secondary to and dependent on them, and adapt yourselves to them], so that even if any do not obey the Word [of God], they may be won over not by discussion but by the [godly] lives of their wives, 2When they observe the pure and modest way in which you conduct yourselves, together with your [a] reverence [for your husband; you are to feel for him all that reverence includes: to respect, defer to, revere him--to honor, esteem, appreciate, prize, and, in the human sense, to adore him, that is, to admire, praise, be devoted to, deeply love, and enjoy your husband].
      • active response
        • appeal to the authority (respectfully & w/in guidelines of that authority)

        • flee ungodly authority
          • everywhere Paul goes there is revival or riot or both
          • how does he know when to go somewhere else?...they RUN HIM OUT OF TOWN
          • persecution spread the gospel abroad
          • still done in submission to authority
        • face death in submission to authority
