BACK TO THE BASICS: JUST MAKE GOD HAPPY

Deuteronomy 10:12-11:1

CBC 1/22/2012

  • Who do you want to make “proud” (Happy)?
    • Momma (Pro Sports players...)
    • Dad
    • Coach
    • girlfriend/boyfriend
    • Boss
    • friends
  • Here’s a simple thought... “Let’s do what makes God proud (happy)
    • what is that?
    • I bet that will be difficult
    • Impossible, how can a sinful being make a perfect God happy?

Let’s see...

12And now, Israel, {speaks to the true church today} what does the Lord your God require of you but [reverently] to fear the Lord your God, [that is] to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being,

13To keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?

14Behold, the heavens and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth also, with all that is in it and on it.

15Yet the Lord had a delight in loving your fathers, and He chose their descendants after them, you above all peoples, as it is this day.

16So circumcise the foreskin of your [minds and] hearts; be no longer stubborn and hardened.

WHY? 17For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, the terrible God, Who is not partial and takes no bribe.

18He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger or temporary resident and gives him food and clothing.

19Therefore love the stranger and sojourner, for you were strangers and sojourners in the land of Egypt.

20You shall [reverently] fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and by His name and presence you shall swear.

21He is your praise; He is your God, Who has done for you these great and terrible things which your eyes have seen.

22Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as the stars of the heavens for multitude.

Deuteronomy 11

1THEREFORE YOU shall love the Lord your God and keep His charge, His statutes, His precepts, and His commandments always.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE GOD HAPPY & PROUD OF US?

  • v12 Reverently Fear Him (what does that mean?) [revere-(regard with great awe & devotion) Him]
    • walk in all His ways (Hbrw: travel His course of life)
    • love Him (greater love...lay down his live for his friend)
    • serve Him (work on His team, wear His uniform, pledge allegiance to His cause, defend His kingdom with everything including your very life)
    • HOW...
      • with all your mind & heart (Hbrw: soul=vitality (energy or vigor)
      • with your entire being
    • Keep the commandments

1 Thess 4:1FURTHERMORE, [a]BRETHREN, we beg and admonish you in [virtue of our union with] the Lord Jesus, that [you follow the instructions which] you learned from us about how you ought to walk so as to please and gratify God, as indeed you are doing, [and] that you do so even more and more abundantly [attaining yet greater perfection in living this life].

2For you know what charges and precepts we gave you [[b]on the authority and by the inspiration of] the Lord Jesus.

3For this is the will of God, that you should be consecrated (separated and set apart for pure and holy living): that you should abstain and shrink from all sexual vice,

4That each one of you should know how to [c]possess (control, manage) his own [d]body in consecration (purity, separated from things profane) and honor,

5Not [to be used] in the passion of lust like the heathen, who are ignorant of the true God and have no knowledge of His will,

6That no man transgress and overreach his brother and defraud him in this matter or defraud his brother in business. For the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we have already warned you solemnly and [e]told you plainly.

7For God has not called us to impurity but to consecration [to dedicate ourselves to the most thorough purity].

8Therefore whoever disregards (sets aside and rejects this) disregards not man but God, Whose [very] Spirit [Whom] He gives to you is holy (chaste, pure).

    • circumcise the foreskin of your minds & hearts
      • don’t be stubborn
      • don’t be hardened
  • Ch. 11 v1
    • love Him as your Master
    • keep His “charge” (Hbrw: be the sentry on watch for the preservation of safety)
    • keep His “statutes” (Hbrw: enactment of law) (Engl: written law as laid down by legislature, legislated rule of society, given the force of the law by those who govern & enforce)
    • keep His “precepts” (Hbrw: verdict, a sentence or formal decree)
    • keep His “commandments” (Hbrw: the Law, whether human or divine)

WHY SHOULD WE MAKE THE EFFORT TO MAKE GOD PROUD OF US?

  • v13 “for your good” (Hbrw: good thing, beautiful, bountiful, cheerful)
  • v14 “heavens, earth & all that’s in them belong to God” (u & I R just managers of His stuff)
  • v15 “Lord DELIGHTS [Hbrw: to deliver] in loving you (the saved...) above all people
  • v17 Because
    • He’s God of gods
    • He’s Lord of lords
    • He’s the great
    • He’s the mighty
    • He’s the terrible
    • He’s not partial
    • He doesn’t take bribes
    • He executes justice for the orphan and the widow
    • He loves the stranger or temporary resident & gives them food & clothing
    • He has done great & terrible things for YOU & you’ve witnessed it in your lifetime

Why wouldn’t you make the effort to make God proud and happy?

you have a death wish?

you have an eternal death wish?

you ignorant & unlearned enough to believe you can defeat God & His kingdom?

you enjoy trouble, pain, heartache & despair?

you fond of confusion, fussing, cussing and uproar?

If you’re not FOR God, He says, you are AGAINST GOD! do the math....

WHEN SHOULD WE MAKE THE EFFORT TO MAKE GOD PROUD OF US?

  • Ch. 11 v1...ALWAYS
    • not just on Sundays
    • not just around other Christians
    • not just around “church people”
    • not just when you’re in a “moral” environment
    • 24/7/365
    • when you feel like it
    • when you don’t feel like it
    • JUST DO WHAT IS RIGHT
