THE KEYS TO CHURCH AUTHORITY

Matthew 16:13-20

CBC Nov. 13, 2011 SM

NOTE: for later. Who was Jesus to give the keys to the kingdom of heaven to the church? All authority in heaven and earth was given to Him and before He commissioned the church He revealed to them He possessed it. Mt 28:16-20. &in Ac 1:1-8 (just before His ascension into Heaven), He tells them where to be and that they will be empowered to fulfill their commission beginning locally and extending to the bounds of the earth.

CONTEXT

v13a When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi

  • located in Northern Palestine
    • at beginning of final journey to Jerusalem which ends in Crucifixion & Resurrection

Where had he come from?

  • feeding the multitude w/ the boys lunch of fish and bread
    • left there and went to coasts of Magdala (Magadan)
    • possible home of Mary Magdalene
    • on west shore of Sea of Galilee
    • Mary Magdalene healed by Jesus when He cast 7 demons out of her
      • that takes the highest “authority” by the way

Previous Conversation

  • disciples had forgotten to take bread for their trip
    • Jesus began speaking to them about the “leaven” of the Pharisees & Sadducees
    • They thought He was talking about the forgotten bread
    • He was speaking of the leaven - “ferment” (stir up, agitate, cause unrest), of the false doctrine

v13b JESUS ASKS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION

  • “Who do “people” say the Son of Man is?
    • Jesus being both God and man at same time confuses us
    • Biology states, He was 100% His Father & yet 100% His mother
    • Son of Man refers to his “humanity”
    • Who do the neighborhood people that I grew up around say that I am?
    • OT Kinsman-redeemer (Book of Ruth) explained
    • the next of kin (one related by blood) always functioned as the kinsman redeemer
    • redeemed (bought back, paid a price, etc.) for a family member who needed redemption (bail) from jail
    • Jesus became related to us “by blood” (he became a flesh & blood man) through Mary
    • so he could function as our Kinsman-redeemer and rescue (bail us out) us from sins penalty, Eternal Death

v14 DISCIPLES ANSWER

  • John the Baptist
    • Herod Antipater thought John the Baptist had come back to life
    • played a role in execution of both John the Baptist & Jesus of Nazareth
    • Pilate sent Jesus to Antipas & Ajtipas sent Jesus right back when Jesus wouldn’t do a “miracle” for him
  • Elijah
    • didn’t experience physical death
    • was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind & chariot of fire
  • Jeremiah
    • the weeping prophet of the OT
    • writer of the Books of the Bible, Jeremiah & Lamentations
  • One of the other Prophets
  • NOTE: People in general have trouble accepting something “NEW”
    • they want to compare something new to something they’re used to
    • ILL: Horse & Automobile, Horse & Steam Engine (glad the car won out)

V15 JESUS ASKS “THE” IMPORTANT QUESTION

  • “But who do you (yourselves) say that I am?
    • that’s the most important question anyone will ever be asked
    • that’s also a question that everyone will be forced to answer
    • as previously seen there are a lot of opinions about who Jesus really is
    • note that there are unimaginably painful, eternal consequences for the WRONG ANSWER

V16 CONFESSION OF PETER

  • “You are the Christ (the anointed one, Messiah)
    • a title Christ Jesus, The Messiah Jesus (Savior)
    • the SON OF GOD
  • “the Son of the living God”
    • Not just some kid born in Bethlehem
    • Not just some young adult that grew up in the area
    • Not just a carpenters son
    • not just a good man or teacher or prophet
  • Son of God
    • referred to Jesus’ divinity
    • God declared that from heaven on two occasions
      • baptism & transfiguration
    • Angel Gabriel announces to Mary who the baby is she will carry and deliver
    • implies the full divinity as part of the Trinity
    • John 1:1-4 1IN THE beginning [before all time] was the Word ([a]Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God [b]Himself. 2He was present originally with God. 3All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being. 4In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men.
    • walks on water
    • cast out demons
    • heals all manner of diseases & infirmities
    • turns water to grape juice, instantly, bypassing natural design
    • rises from the dead

JESUS’ RESPONSE

V17 Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are you Simon Bar-Jonah. (Simon son of Jonah)

  • What kind of life are you looking for?
    • happy or unhappy?
    • fortunate or unfortunate?
    • to be envied or to not be envied?
    • Blessedness & all that comes with it comes with confessing Jesus as our “personal Savior & Son of God”
    • Condemnation & all that comes with it comes with denying Jesus as our personal Savior & Son of God
  • “are YOU”
    • Peter couldn’t believe for the rest of the disciples
    • each had to answer the question for themselves
    • each of us has to answer the question for ourselves
    • NO SALVATION BY “ASSOCIATION”...

V17 “For flesh and blood (men) have not revealed this to you

  • Impossible for you to be saved because another human by themselves stirs your emotions, guilt, fear, etc.
    • every human is a sinner under the same curse
    • God is no respecter of persons
    • preacher is not better than the mechanic

v17 “...but My Father Who is in heaven”

  • Holy Spirit of God calls and convicts the human (heart) mind
    • He uses people to deliver the “message” (Gospel, Good News)
    • People can’t see or work inside other people’s mind
    • If you are depending on the work of some human for your salvation, you will come up short
      • they prayed “for” you...Peter had to confess with his mouth & believe with his mind
      • they baptized you
      • they put your name on the church roll

V18 And I (Jesus) tell you, you are Peter (GR: petros - a large piece of rock),

  • Jesus knows who & what we are
    • we can’t fool God
    • if we’re pretending to be a Christian Jesus knows that
    • if we are hiding sin (inconsistencies with the Bible) in our life Jesus sees that
    • He knows our thoughts, motivations, preferences, schemes, manipulations
    • if we’re coming to Heaven or going to bust Hell wide open the second we die

V18 “...and on this rock (GR: petra - a huge rock like Gibraltar) (Himself), I will build MY CHURCH”

  • Jesus, Son of God, declared He would be the foundation on which He built His Church
    • it’s not “our little church”
    • it’s not the pastor/teacher/preacher’s church
    • it’s not the deacon’s church
    • it’s not some powerful clique in the membership’s church
    • if your are in a category mentioned & you think you’re the AUTHORITY at CBC...think again cause we a’int!
    • Jesus said He was the foundation, builder and owner
    • if you have a problem with that, take it up with Him (know some who did & got “took up”)

V18 “...and the gates of Hades (the powers of the internal region) shall not overpower it (or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it)

  • power of sin is present everywhere except God’s dwelling place, Heaven
    • it’s in Hell
    • it’s in this planet
    • it’s in your mind and mine
    • Sin in combination with any of the above will never overpower the institution of Jesus, Son of God
  • some have wanted to use the church for their own personal reasons & preferences
    • misguided authority
    • they think b/c they are an “important” member they can direct the direction & ministry of the church

Matt 16:22 Then Peter took Him (Jesus) aside to speak to Him privately and began to reprove and charge Him sharply, saying, God forbid, Lord! (Contradiction of terms) This must never happen to You!

  • God forbid that this church ever:
    • let in a person of color....what does “teach all nations” mean to you?
    • have a set of drums on the stage...why would we worship contrary to King David, man after God’s own heart
    • and all the other personal preferences that are intertwined with our personalities & sin natures

JESUS’ RESPONSE ( to Peter & you & me )

Matt 16:23 But Jesus turned away from Peter and said to him, Get behind Me, Satan! You are in My way (an offense and a hindrance and a snare to Me); for you are minding what partakes not of the nature and quality of God, but of men. 24 The Jesus said to His disciples, if anyone desires to by My disciple, let him deny himself (disregard, lose sight of, and forget himself and his own interests) and take up his cross and follow Me (cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also)

  • any questions???

V19 I (Jesus, Son of God, foundation, instituter & sole proprietor of the church), will give you (true church made up of true disciples), THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN;

  • what are “Keys”
    • tools of authority
    • you gain legal entry to this building if you have been authorized by being given a key
    • who has a key to City Hall, PPD, NCSO, Court House, Your house??? (ONLY THE AUTHORIZED)
    • authority from the one who holds all authority (THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN)

Romans 13:1LET EVERY person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God's appointment.

  • whatever the church binds
    • declares to be improper and unlawful on earth
    • must be what is already bound in heaven
    • book of the law & the essence of the law (love)
  • whatever the church looses
    • declare lawful on earth
    • must be what is already lawful (loosed) in heaven

THE CHURCH HAS BEEN GIVEN AUTHORITY TO DISCIPLINE ITS MEMBERS BY LAW & BY LOVE

  • The Proper Procedure
  • Matt 18 Parable of lost sheep.
    • v12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray and gets lost, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountain and go in search of the one that is lost?
    • 13And if it should be that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not get lost.

Matt 18: 15If your brother wrongs you, go and show him his fault, between you and him privately. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother.

16But if he does not listen, take along with you one or two others, so that every word may be confirmed and upheld by the testimony of two or three witnesses.

17If he pays no attention to them [refusing to listen and obey], tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a pagan and a tax collector.(A)

18Truly I tell you, whatever you forbid and declare to be improper and unlawful on earth must be [e]what is already forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit and declare proper and lawful on earth must be [f]what is already permitted in heaven.

PURPOSE OF SEEKING LOST SHEEP IS TO BE ABLE TO REJOICE

  • command: Heb 10:25Not forsaking or neglecting to assemble together [as believers], as is the habit of some people, but admonishing (warning, urging, and encouraging) one another, and all the more faithfully as you see the day approaching.
    • response to the 100’s on church roll not attending???
    • approach them in private...
    • approach them with witnesses...
    • bring them before the church...
    • GOAL: to rejoice as they return to the assembly and worship the Lord together!

CONCL:

do you think we could build a case for the church becoming....”lazy”?

the Biblical emphasis is not on “churching” (excommunicating) people, it’s on rejoicing over finding lost sheep
