WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THE BIBLE?

2 Peter 1:16-21

CBC 1/8/2012 SM

Everybody didn’t grow up in a Bible believing home

How do we answer them when they ask, “Why do you believe the Bible?”

  • It’s not a crime to “investigate” Christianity
    • God never called us to blind faith
    • If He had He wouldn’t have gone to the trouble to preserve the Bible
  • Reasons we don’t give for believing the Bible
    • I was raised that way
    • I’ve tried it and it works for me
      • that opens a very large logical hole
      • ILL: man in AA gets to step about the Higher Power. Sees a squirrel sitting on a limb outside his kitchen window every morning. Claims that squirrel as his “higher power”. Hasn’t taken a drink in 5 years. When asked he says, “I’ve tried it and it works for me.”
      • ILL: the Mormon, who lives better than most of the people in our church membership, reads the book of Mormon and says, “I’ve tried it, and it works for me.”
      • the Bible is not true b/c it works for us. It works for us b/c it’s true!

2 Peter 1:16-21

Summary, “The Bible is a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eye witnesses during the lifetime of other eye witnesses. They report to us supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies and claim to be divine rather than human in origin.”

16For we were not following cleverly devised stories when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty (grandeur, authority of sovereign power).

17For when He was invested with honor and glory from God the Father and a voice was borne to Him by the [splendid] Majestic Glory [in the bright cloud that overshadowed Him, saying], This is My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased and delight,

18We [actually] heard this voice borne out of heaven, for we were together with Him on the holy mountain.

19And we have the prophetic word [made] firmer still. You will do well to pay close attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dismal (squalid and dark) place, until the day breaks through [the gloom] and the Morning Star rises ([a]comes into being) in your hearts.

20[Yet] first [you must] understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is [a matter] of any personal or private or special interpretation (loosening, solving).

21For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so--it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit.

  • Seems as if Peter is defending the accuracy, authority and the historicity of the teaching of the Apostles we now know as the New Testament which is rooted in the Old Testament Scriptures.
  • IT IS A RELIABLE COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS
    • 16For we were not following cleverly devised stories when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah),
    • when we spoke of Jesus it wasn’t myths, fairy tales or legends
    • we are sharing factual information with you
    • it is reliable collection of historical documents written down by eye witnesses during the lifetime of other eye witnesses
    • 16..but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty (grandeur, authority of sovereign power).
      • we saw it, we were there

1 John 1:1-3 [WE ARE writing] about the Word of Life [[a]in] Him Who existed from the beginning, Whom we have heard, Whom we have seen with our [own] eyes, Whom we have gazed upon [for ourselves] and have touched with our [own] hands.

2And the Life [[b]an aspect of His being] was revealed (made manifest, demonstrated), and we saw [as eyewitnesses] and are testifying to and declare to you the Life, the eternal Life [[c]in Him] Who already existed with the Father and Who [actually] was made visible (was revealed) to us [His followers].

3What we have seen and [ourselves] heard, we are also telling you, so that you too may [d]realize and enjoy fellowship as partners and partakers with us. And [this] fellowship that we have [which is a [e]distinguishing mark of Christians] is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah).

  • Something about “Eye witness accounts”
  • court system rises and falls on “eye witness” accounts

1 Corinthians 15 Paul’s argument for the Resurrection of Christ

  • After he was resurrected,
    • he appeared to Peter
    • then he appeared to the Disciples
    • then he appeared to 500 brethren at once, “most of whom remain until now, although some have fallen asleep”
    • the majority of the 500 were around when 1 Corinthians was written
  • Ever heard about the “watered down translations” of the Bible that make it doubtful?
    • what we have is not really what happened b/c it was written by a later community
    • some overzealous monks have changed some things so they line up
    • if that was true then this is how they would have done it
      • First, the would have to locate the 6000 manuscripts that make up the New Testament and change all of them, the exact same way, not allowing their ink work to show and then get them back where they stole them from before anybody saw them.
      • 6000 manuscripts, so what you may say...Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars - 10 manuscripts, Aristotle’s Poetics - 5 manuscripts, Herodotus - less than 10 manuscripts.
      • NT manuscripts date back as far as AD 120 to 150. Some say, “that’s a long time after the originals.” really?
      • Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars 900 years later
      • Aristotle’s Poetics 1300 to 1400 years later
      • with Homer about 2100 years is earliest we can put our hands on
      • the New Testament, within the lifetime of eye witnesses
      • We’ve got “the best” and “most accurate” History book.
  • THEY REPORT SUPERNATURAL EVENTS
  • 17For when He was invested with honor and glory from God the Father and a voice was borne to Him by the [splendid] Majestic Glory [in the bright cloud that overshadowed Him, saying], This is My beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased and delight, 18We [actually] heard this voice borne out of heaven, for we were together with Him on the holy mountain.
  • Supernatural stuff happening, not super human stuff either, supernatural
    • audible voice of God
    • withered hand growing back
    • man blind, w/ nothing in his head to see with, being able to see
    • paralytic, never walked in his life, told to take cot & walk to the house
    • Jesus saying, “Go to the other side of the lake & I will meet you.”/ later on in the boat somebody says, “Hey, did Jesus say how he was coming over? No why? Because, you a’int gonna believe this, but HERE HE COMES, WALKING!”
    • Friday Jesus is DEAD, Sunday Jesus is RISEN
    • supernatural events
  • We have got a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eye witnesses during the lifetime of other eye witnesses. They report supernatural events, by the way. These events took place in fulfillment of specific prophecy.

Psalm 22: 1[a]MY GOD, my God, why have You forsaken me? [PRECISELY WHAT JESUS SAID WHEN HE WAS BEING CRUCIFIED]

6But I am a worm, and no man; I am the scorn of men, and despised by the people.(B)

7All who see me laugh at me and mock me; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,(C)

8He trusted and rolled himself on the Lord, that He would deliver him. Let Him deliver him, seeing that He delights in him! [THAT’S WHAT IS SAID AS JESUS IS BEING CRUCIFIED]

12Many [foes like] bulls have surrounded me; strong bulls of Bashan have hedged me in. 13Against me they opened their mouths wide, like a ravening and roaring lion.

14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.[BEING CRUCIFIED]

My heart is like wax; it is softened [with anguish] and melted down within me. [PIERCE HIM IN THE SIDE, THRUSTING UPWARDLY WITH A SPEAR, BLOOD AND WATER RUSH OUT AS THE PERICARDIUM IS PIERCED]

15My strength is dried up like a fragment of clay pottery; [with thirst] my tongue cleaves to my jaws; [I THIRST]

16For [like a pack of] dogs they have encompassed me; [GENTILES, ROMAN SOLDIERS]

a company of evildoers has encircled me, [THIEF ON THE RIGHT AND LEFT]

they pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones; [WHY? B/C HIS LEGS DIDN’T HAVE TO BE BROKEN TO HASTEN HIS DEATH]

[the evildoers] gaze at me. 18They part my clothing among them and cast lots for my raiment (a long, shirtlike garment, a seamless undertunic). [EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED]

  • That was written 1000 years before Jesus was born and by a man who never once saw a crucifixion in his life b/c crucifixion hadn’t been invented yet

THEY CLAIM THEIR WRITINGS ARE DIVINE RATHER THAN HUMAN IN ORIGIN

20[Yet] first [you must] understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is [a matter] of any personal or private or special interpretation (loosening, solving).

21For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so--it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit.

  • Men wrote the Bible, but it’s the Word of God...explain that
    • argument is that you can’t rely on things written by men
    • if that is your problem then you need to get rid of every book you have...all written by men.
    • you can never trust anything else you ever read in your life...gotta do better than that!
  • I’ll believe it if you can prove it to me scientifically
    • problem one, is you don’t deserve to be in this conversation
    • indicates first you have no idea about the authority or historicity of the Bible
    • indicates second you don’t know anything about scientific method...(something has to be observable, measurable and repeatable.)
    • Historical events aren’t observable, measurable or repeatable
    • You can’t use scientific method to prove George Washington was our first president.
    • If your problem w/ the Bible is because you can’t apply the scientific method, you have got a problem with history itself.
    • If something is written, the only was you can question it is if you don’t have corroboration or there is internal inconsistency.
    • we can’t find ANY internal inconsistency & we have multiple corroboration
      • 3 languages, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic
      • 3 continents- Asia, Africa & Europe
      • 40 authors, most of whom never met each other
      • b/c they wrote Bible over a period of 1600 years.
    • Look in your dictionary - that is the very definition of “CORROBORATION”!
  • Unless you have anything that would negate what we find in the Bible, you have to accept the fact, based on the evidentiary method, not the scientific method, this...
  • The Bible is a reliable collection of historical documents written down by eye witnesses during the lifetime of other eye witnesses. They report to us supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecy and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
  • Did you notice we skipped v 19 And we have the prophetic word [made] firmer still. You will do well to pay close attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dismal (squalid and dark) place, until the day breaks through [the gloom] and the Morning Star rises ([a]comes into being) in your hearts.
  • that’s the icing on the cake, “I TRIED IT, AND IT WORKS FOR ME!”
