POLITICS, GOVERNMENT & BIBLICAL AUTHORITY: PART 1

ROMANS 13:1-7

CBC 1/8/12 SN

INTRO: People know “about” Ro. 13

1LET EVERY person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God's appointment.(A)

2Therefore he who resists and sets himself up against the authorities resists what God has appointed and arranged [in divine order]. And those who resist will bring down judgment upon themselves [receiving the penalty due them].

3For civil authorities are not a terror to [people of] good conduct, but to [those of] bad behavior. Would you have no dread of him who is in authority? Then do what is right and you will receive his approval and commendation.

4For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, [you should dread him and] be afraid, for he does not bear and wear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant to execute His wrath (punishment, vengeance) on the wrongdoer.

5Therefore one must be subject, not only to avoid God's wrath and escape punishment, but also as a matter of principle and for the sake of conscience.

6For this same reason you pay taxes, for [the civil authorities] are official servants under God, devoting themselves to attending to this very service.

7Render to all men their dues. [Pay] taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, and honor to whom honor is due.

  • What does it mean to “submit to Government”
    • Is it, “Divine Right of Kings” - anybody in authority must be obeyed in any & everything they say
    • Others say there is a “Test of Authority” & they must pass every aspect of the test before you obey anything they say
    • Is there a real “Separation of Church & State”
    • Hitler used this text to tell the Lutherans to “shut up” & let him do what he wanted (& they did) WHY? Hitler was a duly elected official & they thought he was to be obeyed.
      • how did Hitler get in position?...b/c he promised to get the “ECONOMY” back on track (sound familiar)
      • by time Lutherans woke up, millions were dead @ hands of duly elected official
      • defense @ Nuremberg trial...Romans 13
  • Where is the “LINE”
    • Zimbabwe used to be a flourishing country. Their currency is now dysfunctional. One person in Parliament said quoting Romans 13 said no one should run against the present Government.
    • Dictator says vote for me and obey....is that right?
  • 4 Popular Pulpit Approaches to Politics
    • FIRST: SEPARATION OF PULPIT & POLITICS
      • we’re about the Gospel, we got no business in politics
    • SECOND: EQUALITY OF PULPIT & POLITICS
      • Rome, Vatican city, a political empire where the Pope rules & reigns so that he does not have to submit to anyone else's authority.
    • THIRD: INTEGRATION OF PULPIT & POLITICS
      • Moral Majority & Religious Right. Christians & Christianity are viewed as merely a political entity. (Iowa caucus & evangelical Christian voters...) By outvoting the liberals, enacting the right laws & electing the right (Christian/Religious) leaders.
    • FOURTH: PROCLAMATION OF POLITICS FROM THE PULPIT
      • will explain this as we go along, but for right now you’ll just have to be “uncomfortable” because this is the “biblical” one!
      • do we worship God @ CBC or do we worship America?
      • we stand when the U.S. Flag comes down the aisle & we don’t stand for the reading of God’s Word as recorded in the Bible?
      • Is our “allegiance” in our worship service to Christ or a Flag of the country in which we live?
      • Should we have a “memorial service” on 9/11 each year or is our “memorial service” on the 1st Sunday of each Quarter, “THE LORD’S SUPPER”?
  • Why does this make us just a little “uncomfortable”?
    • long-standing myth of the separation of church and state
    • that says it is inappropriate for pastors to talk about political topics
    • is that “biblical”? is that even correct according to our government?
    • where did the statement, “wall of separation between church and state” come from?
    • answer: letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptist Assoc. in answer to their letter. They were worried that the Congregational Church was going to be made the “official” church in America, and the Baptist said, ....”NO”! Jefferson writes back and lets them know that the USA will not have any official state church. “The Federal Government shall not enact any laws that will henceforth establish a state church. There is a wall of separation between the church and the state.”
    • He didn’t mean that religion and politics can’t and shouldn’t mix.
  • PROOF:
    • 1st Amendment Constitution of the United States - “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;...”
    • Valedictorian - can quote anybody in their graduation address...except JESUS...(separation of church and state) when all these other people are religious and spiritual people...
    • that’s not in the Constitution...she’s not Congress, she’s the Valedictorian...
    • Constitution doesn’t say I can’t pray at the opening of our High School football game...it says Congress can’t make a law establishing a religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...
    • 1639 New Hampshire agreement of settlers - Capitol Laws (death sentence) & Criminal Law
      • Capitol Laws - idolatry: Ex 22:20;, blasphemy, witchcraft, buggary (homosexuality), false witness, man stealing, cursing parents, rebellious son,
      • Criminal Laws - adultery, fornication, swearing, profaning the Lord’s day
    • 1778 Statement about Pastors: That it be determined by God’s grace out of the Holy Scriptures to instruct the people committed to its charge and to keep nothing as required of necessity to eternal salvation but that which he shall be persuaded may be concluded and proved from the scriptures. That he will use both public and private admonitions, as well to the sick as to the whole within his cure. As needs shall require and occassion shall be given. And that he will be diligent in prayers and reading of the same. That he will be diligent to frame and fashion his own self and his family according to the doctrine of Christ. And to make both himself and them as much as in him lieth wholesome examples and patterns to the flock of Christ. That he will maintain and set forward as much as he can quietness, peace, love among all people and especially among those that are or shall be committed to his charge. (Constitution of the State of South Carolina)
    • We’ve been misled and mis-educated. From the inception of our country religion and politics have gone hand in hand.
    • 1780 Massachusetts “pursuit of happiness” (1st State to give us gay marriage & socialist health care plan..) Constitution - Article II. It is the right as well as the duty of all men in society, publicly and at stated seasons, to worship the Supreme Being, the great Creator and Preserver of the universe. And no subject shall be hurt, molested, or restrained, in his person, liberty, or estate, for worshipping God in the manner and season most agreeable to the dictates of his own conscience, or for his religious profession or sentiments, provided he doth not disturb the public peace or obstruct others in their religious worship. Article III. As the happiness of a people and the good order and preservation of civil government essentially depend upon piety, religion, and morality, and as these cannot be generally diffused through a community but by the institution of the public worship of God and of the public instructions in piety, religion, and morality: Therefore, To promote their happiness and to secure the good order and preservation of their government, the people of this commonwealth have a right to invest their legislature with power to authorize and require, and the legislature shall, from time to time, authorize and require, the several towns, parishes, precincts, and other bodies-politic or religious societies to make suitable provision, at their own expense, for the institution of the public worship of God and for the support and maintenance of public Protestant teachers of piety, religion, and morality in all cases where such provision shall not be made voluntarily. And the people of this commonwealth have also a right to, and do, invest their legislature with authority to enjoin upon all the subject an attendance upon the instructions of the public teachers aforesaid, at stated times and seasons, if there be any on whose instructions they can conscientiously and conveniently attend. Provided, notwithstanding, That the several towns, parishes, precincts, and other bodies-politic, or religious societies, shall at all times have the exclusive right and electing their public teachers and of contracting with them for their support and maintenance. And all moneys paid by the subject to the support of public worship and of public teachers aforesaid shall, if he require it, be uniformly applied to the support of the public teacher or teachers of his own religious sect or denomination, provided there be any on whose instructions he attends; otherwise it may be paid toward the support of the teacher or teachers of the parish or precinct in which the said moneys are raised. And every denomination of Christians, demeaning themselves peaceably and as good subjects of the commonwealth, shall be equally under the protection of the law; and no subordination of any sect or denomination to another shall ever be established by law.
    • Who said, “We have a long-standing history of the separation of church and state”...THAT’S A LIE!
  • DEFINITION OF POLITICS
    • Websters 1828 n. The science of government; that part of ethics which consists in the regulation and government of a nation or state, for the preservation of its safety, peace and prosperity; comprehending the defense of its existence and rights against foreign control or conquest, the augmentation of its strength and resources, and the protection of its citizens in their rights, with the preservation and improvement of their morals. Politics, as a science or an art, is a subject of vast extent and importance.
    • Who is better equipped to discuss politics than the church?
  • POLITICS & MORALITY
    • we’ve been told, “You cannot legislate morality”
    • only true in sense that legislation can’t make people moral
    • but they mean, “you can’t enact legislation that has to do with morality”...CAN’T BE TRUE
    • WHY? b/c “all legislation is ‘moral’”
    • can’t legislate anything other than morality
    • culture says, “you religious people close your mouth b/c you have morals and we don’t which means we can govern and you can’t, Romans 13” THAT’S WRONG
    • then they write laws about:
      • marriage...between homosexuals (b/c it’s only right & fair) def. of “MORAL”, DUH!
      • abortion ...between a woman and her doctor (that’s a “moral” choice isn’t it?)
      • laws concerning property:
        • burglary
        • trespassing
        • squatting rights
        • all deal with the immoral misuse of another person’s property
        • laws dealing with “morality”
        • there is nothing that we do politically that is not “moral”
    • Pastor’s can’t help but preach politics and morals
    • WHY? Because politics is about “Authority” & the Bible speaks clearly to it

Matt. 28:18Jesus approached and, [a]breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.

Col 1:15[Now] He is the [a]exact likeness of the unseen God [the visible representation of the invisible]; He is the Firstborn of all creation.

16For it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [by His service, intervention] and in and for Him.

17And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).

1 Peter 2:13Be submissive to every human institution and authority for the sake of the Lord, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,

14Or to governors as sent by him to bring vengeance (punishment, justice) to those who do wrong and to encourage those who do good service.

15For it is God's will and intention that by doing right [your good and honest lives] should silence (muzzle, gag) the ignorant charges and ill-informed criticisms of foolish persons.

16[Live] as free people, [yet] without employing your freedom as a pretext for wickedness; but [live at all times] as servants of God.

17Show respect for all men [treat them honorably]. Love the brotherhood (the Christian fraternity of which Christ is the Head). Reverence God. Honor the emperor.

  • How can a Preacher NOT PREACH POLITICS?
    • tear these passages out of the Bible?
    • Don’t preach politics: Jesus, Paul & Peter disagree

CONCL: ISSUES TO DEAL WITH IN THIS SERIES

  • Authority and Submission
  • Jurisdiction (home, church & government)
    • who has jurisdiction over the subject of “MARRIAGE”? church, not government (they are out of their jurisdiction legislating a re-definition of marriage ( 2 women or 2 men...)
    • who has jurisdiction over children, church or home? that would be the home...which raises some questions about the validity of our church youth ministry structure & the question as to whether our design is even “biblical”.
  • Exercising Authority
    • job of President considered all in all. look it up, who our Sheriff is is more important that who the President is.
    • we live in a Constitutional Representative Republic (that’s not a Democracy)
  • Support of Authority
  • remember, politics is not our “hope”
    • our hope is in Christ
    • we are citizens of 2 kingdoms (America & Heaven)
  • you can’t help but be involved in politics
    • woke up this morning & turned on the lights. The “rate” you pay for electricity is political
    • turned on the city water....political
    • took your medicine with the water...FDA said that medicine was ok...political
    • ate breakfast...FDA & USDA...political
    • drove to work in car...registered by Dept. of Fin. & Admin....political
    • put seat belt on, why, ...political
    • drove speed limit, or watched for police as you didn’t...political
    • gas in your car....large part of price is TAX...political

* If Christians aren’t salt & light in the area of politics....WHO IS?
