DOWN IS NOT YOUR DESTINY

Micah 7:8

CBC 9/18/2011 SM

Ever been knocked down?

Had the wind taken out of your sails?

How does one get back up?

TEXT: 8Rejoice not against me, O my enemy! When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light to me.

NLT: 8 Do not gloat over me, my enemies!
For though I fall, I will rise again.
Though I sit in darkness,
the Lord will be my light.

WHO IS OUR ENEMY?

  • Satan the accuser
    • chose to reject God and everything God stands for
    • when you became a Christian (expl.) you became the enemy of Satan
    • not being a Christian makes you an enemy of God...think about it & read the back of the “book” (Bible), b/c “GOD WINS”
  • World System
    • under the curse of sin
    • earn living by the sweat of our brow
    • dealing with power struggles at every turn
      • home
      • work
      • recreation (ever get n a fight on vacation? how does that happen?)
  • Self
    • we can be enticed because we have lustful desires, which lead to sinful actions, which leads to death & destruction (physical, emotional & spiritual)
  • Between these three we can find ourself pretty far down
    • physically sick
    • tired & worn out
    • depressed (darkness)
    • betrayed & ostracized by a “friend”
    • told we’ll never make it
    • broke financially
    • lonely & unhappy
  • If we experience enough of these we may begin to think this is “normal”
    • I’m supposed to be down
    • I’m supposed to live on this lower level
  • Paul says to the Romans (8:37) “No, in all things we are MORE than CONQUERERS through Him who loved us.”
    • not “just” conquerers, but MORE than...
    • living a surrendered life to Jesus Christ is the answer to defeat “stinkin’ thinkin’”

WHEN I FALL, I SHALL ARISE

  • Not “IF” we fall, but “WHEN” we fall
    • Isaiah 59:19 “When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him and put him to flight.”
  • We are made “righteous” by the blood of Jesus Christ, not our good works.
    • good works don’t get you to heaven & bad works don’t send you to Hell
    • Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man cometh to the Father but by me”
      • rejecting a relationship w/ Jesus condemns a person to Hell
      • accepting a relationship w/ Jesus prepares us a place in Heaven
      • doesn’t make us sin free & happy-go-lucky in this life
  • After salvation we have a choice as to whether we...
    • Walk in the Spirit (pleasing to God)
    • Walk in the Flesh (not pleasing to God)
    • John 5:4 “For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world...”
    • Paul to Corinthians, “Thanks be to God, which gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!”
    • Paul to Romans, “Therefore I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, then you will be able to test and approve, what God’s will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will.”
  • With God’s Word & God’s Spirit guiding our lives we will make decisions that are pleasing to God and profitable to us
    • Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desire of your heart.”
    • our desires will match up with God’s desires when God is our “delight”
    • The opposite is true, fill in the blank & see what happens... “Delight yourself in the _____________ and it will give you the consequences due to you.

WHEN DARKNESS (DEPRESSION) OVERTAKES US GOD PROMISES TO LIGHT THE WAY OUT

  • Psalm 119:105 “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”
    • When God’s word lights our path or destination is secure in the LORD
    • No matter what we encounter en route
      • health issues
      • relational issues
      • addictions
      • financial issues
      • self-esteem issues...etc.
  • just because there are “tests” along the way doesn’t mean we can’t “pass” them
    • how many tests will the average student face this school year?
    • how many should we expect in our adult life?
    • don’t get depressed and live in darkness b/c there’s going to be some tests
    • study your “BOOK” and make a good grade
  • Don’t forget about “FAITH” - seeing the invisible and believing the impossible
    • our circumstances don’t dictate our true condition
    • don’t look at the circumstances, look at the blood Jesus shed for you b/c you were so precious
    • don’t buy the lie from the devil that “Down is our Destiny”
    • Paul to Phillipians “He who has begun a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
  • Where was Moses when the lights went out?......N the dark!
    • to be in the dark we have to lose some things
    • joy, peace, happiness, strength....etc.
    • those can’t be “STOLEN”... only surrendered!
    • In the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of us, WE DON’T HAVE TO SURRENDER those things
  • TELL YOUR NEIGHBOR...”DOWN IS NOT YOUR DESTINY”
  • TELL YOUR NEIGHBOR, “DOWN IS NOT MY DESTINY”
  • HOLD YOUR NEIGHBOR’S HAND AND SAY A SIMPLE PRAYER FOR THEM, “Lord, help my neighbor trust in You through all the difficulties they encounter this week. In Jesus name, amen’
