A PROMISE FOR THE FAITHFUL

Obadiah 1:17

CBC 7/24/11 SM

3rd Sermon from Obadiah n our “Preach Thru The Bible” series

Previously:

  1. Pride of Edom 11/09
  2. The Illusion of the Innocent Bystanders 11/10

TEXT TODAY:

17But on Mount Zion [in Jerusalem] there shall be deliverance [for those who escape], and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess its [own former] possessions.

Obadiah means “Servant of Yahweh”

  • Books Focus:
    • judgment against Edom (Esau’s kids)
    • salvation for Judah (Jacob’s kids)
  • Struggle between 2 nations that began w/ the struggle between twins, Jacob and Esau in Rebekah’s womb...
    • these 2 didn’t know a time they weren’t struggling w/ each other
    • Esau - rugged, hunter, outdoorsman & didn’t appreciate what he had
    • Jacob - fair appearance, comfort of tent & specialized in taking advantage of people who didn’t appreciate what they had.
    • RESULT: Jacob (younger) ended up w/ the “birthright” of Esau (older)
  • CHURCH: not good when we can’t appreciate what we have
    • when we place little value on our God-given blessings & give them up for short-term pleasure...
    • trade a time of worship for temporary pleasure
    • trade a selfish life filled w/ “toys” for an eternity in heaven (what’s a man profited if he gain the whole world and lose his soul?)
    • Esau traded “birthright inheritance” for a plate of food...
    • don’t forfeit our spirituality chasing short-term pleasure
      • once it’s gone...it’s gone
      • can cry for it
      • can call for it
      • can beg for it
      • can pray for it
      • but it’s still GONE!
      • moral purity (virginity) is like that...
  • Struggle escalated to point Jacob had to run for his life
    • it spread to the kids in the families
    • Edomites (Esau’s kids) have been trying to kill Judah (Jacob’s kids) ever since
    • Difference maker is GOD
    • Jacob & his kids always prevail b/c God is on their side
    • WHY? b/c Esau always relied on his own strength and ability & never depended on God (sound familiar???????)
      • i’ve got education...ok
      • i’ve got skills....ok
      • i’ve got training...ok
  • Jacob wrestled with God one night and refused to let go until he received a “blessing”
    • good to know what to “HOLD ON TO”
    • make contact with God and let Him hold on to you and He will be the difference maker in your life ( in every aspect of it...work, family)

Obadiah gives a wake-up call for what happens to those who leave God out of their lives.

  • He also gives encouragement to those who place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ & are depending on Him.
    • God Promises the Faithful will be Delivered
      • salvation definition - to be delivered
      • got burdens?
      • got temptations?

Psalm “He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the tabernacle of the Almighty... surely He shall deliver you from the trap of the hunter and from persistent evil doers. He will cover you with His feathers and under His wing we will find trust...

we will not be afraid of the terrors of the dark, nor of the arrows that are fired at us through the day...a thousand will fall at your side and 10,000 at your right hand, but you will be safe.”

  • God Promises the Faithful will be brought into Holiness
    • set apart for special purpose
    • useful in the work of His Kingdom
    • make a difference in this old world
    • take MY WRONG & MAKE ME RIGHT (justification)
    • given a new purpose for living
    • follow after the important instead of the temporary
    • work in the power of the Holy Spirit
  • God Promises the Faithful an Inheritance
    • def - that which someone has set aside for you to enjoy
    • companionship - I am with you always, even to the end of the world
    • authority - If you abide in Me and my Word abides in you then you may ask what you will and it will be done for you
    • protection - Be not afraid of their words, for I, the Lord am with you, and I will protect you and keep you
    • provision - If you eat of My bread and drink of My water, you will never be hungry or thirsty again
    • power - But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in Judea and in Samaria and to the uttermost part of the earth
    • eternity with Him - I (Jesus) go and prepare a place for you, and if I go I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you will be also.”

CONCL:

When we know what God has promised, it’s then we’re able to keep our faith in hard times!

TAKE A STAND

ESTHER

CBC 7/10/11 SM

ever heard, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything?”

  • How much backbone do we really have?
    • what kind of pressure does it take for us to cave in?
    • what kind of values & morals are behind that Sunday School face?
    • when the rubber meets the road...
      • Saturday night activities
      • work place ethics
      • choice between right & easy

Characters in book of Esther illustrate what TO DO and what NOT TO DO

  1. Vashti: Take a Moral Stand.

Esther 1:11-12

  • king threw a drinking party with his buddies
    • not an all-nighter, but a 7 day blow out
    • king drunk on 7th day calls for the Queen
    • to “ogle” her
      • guys are visually stimulated
    • Queen refused the command
      • consequences
      • king gets mad
      • king scared all women will rebel
      • advisors say Queen has embarrassed the kingdom (not that a 7 day drunken binge by the king didn’t do it??????)
      • Queen Vashti removed from her position & banished from the kingdom
      • can you do than when faced with a similar situation?
  • much better to be virtuous like Vashti
    • than to be sensual like Samson

  1. Mordecai: Take a Spiritual Stand.
  • Has 3 things to tell Esther
    • Don’t think you’ll escape the holocaust when it happens, you’ll be killed too.
    • If you don’t do something, God will send someone else.
    • God has positioned you exactly where He wants you for such a time as this.
  • Takes courage to become a Christian and live a Christian life.
    • courage to admit we fall short morally
    • courage to admit we need God
    • courage to ask Jesus to forgive us
    • courage to receive Him into your life now
    • courage to tell others about Him

* Are you Man or Woman enough to take a “stand”?

  1. Esther: Take a Positional Stand.
  • Andrew Jackson, “One man with courage makes a majority”
  • Esther was put into a position to make a difference
    • God has put us where we are for the same reason
    • He created us on purpose for a purpose...His purpose
    • Not here just to
      • enjoy our position & benefits
      • tolerate our job
      • look around & see the people He has placed in your life for such a time as this.
    • easy to “RUN” from hard situations
  1. God: Recognize His Sovereignty.
  • He may be invisible, but He’s not invincible
    • HIs will, will be done
    • on earth & in heaven
    • he gave Esther beauty to become Queen, to save a nation
    • There are no coincidences with God!
      • life is filled with appointments, not accidents

INVITATION:

Little different than usual....

  • If you’re willing to take a “STAND” for God then you may stand, otherwise keep your seat...
  • MORAL STAND
  • SPIRITUAL STAND
  • POSITIONAL STAND
