JOEL 2:1-2

CBC 6/26/11 SM

Wake Up Call for the CHURCH

  • can’t operate in...
    • a don’t care attitude
    • a lazy, do nothing mode
    • a come once a week is enough style
    • I’m ok & the rest can go to Hell
    • sorry God, my schedule is full

1BLOW THE trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on My holy Mount [Zion]. Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of [the judgment of] the Lord is coming; it is close at hand--(A)

2A day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and of thick mists and darkness, like the morning dawn spread upon the mountains; so there comes a [heathen, hostile] people numerous and mighty, the like of which has never been before and shall not be again even to the years of many generations.

  • Realize how close we are to the Lord’s return
    • understand it’s gonna get worse b-4 it gets better
    • know the Church (people) are the soldiers in this battle
    • Sounding the Trumpet is the call to prepare for battle (enemy is just outside the gates, not miles away!!!)

Israel, like America moved away from the heart of God

  • God’s Judgment was the result
    • 70 AD Romans leveled city of Jerusalem & temple
    • dark cloud of despair settled over Israel for nearly 2000 years
    • Israel returned to her homeland, but her darkest hours are still ahead
    • Israel represents, “God’s chosen People”
    • when U read about Israel, you are also reading about “THE CHURCH”
    • called to carry out God’s business
    • opposed by the Devil himself & his army
    • called to reach out to lost souls before they are eternally lost
    • commissioned to go into battle with the Blood of the Lamb
    • The Enemy of Christianity has already begun launching attacks (terrorism)
    • their goal is absolute destruction of all opposition (Israel & Christianity)

  • spiritual weapons of the church
    • to be proficient w/ a weapon U must “qualify” with it on a regular basis
    • ILL “shooting range”
    • Church weapons R not tanks, smart bombs..
    • Fasting
    • Prayer
    • Bible study & proficiency
    • Evangelism
    • Intercession (doing for others)
    • Faith in God
    • (those weapons have no equal)
    • enemy cannot match them
    • enemy cannot overcome them

  • professed Christians turning away from God & going back into the world & it’s activities
  • people of God under oppression & living in defeat
  • churches splitting & denominations allowing sin in their very pulpits
  • cliques & cartels among the church membership
  • intolerance toward up-to-date ministry tools
  • moral failures, sexual misconduct in the church
  • alcoholic & drug addicted society
  • disease from sexual perversion
  • deaths on the road due to alcohol. partying & carelessness (texting etc.)
  • divorce rates
  • unnatural family units
  • Murder & mayhem (street, home, school, churches)
    • we’re in a war....YA THINK?????????

1 John 4:4 Little children, you are of God [you belong to Him] and have [already] defeated and overcome them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world.

Isaiah 59:19 So [as the result of the Messiah's intervention] they shall [reverently] fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him and put him to flight [for He will come like a rushing stream which the breath of the Lord drives].

2 Corinthians 10:3 For though we walk (live) in the flesh, we are not carrying on our warfare according to the flesh and using mere human weapons.

4For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds,

5[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),

6Being in readiness to punish every [insubordinate for his] disobedience, when your own submission and obedience [as a church] are fully secured and complete.

  • get proficient with your spiritual weapons

Joel 2: 12 That is why the Lord says,

“Turn to me now, while there is time.

Give me your hearts.

Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.

13 Don’t tear your clothing in your grief,

but tear your hearts instead.”

Return to the Lord your God,

for he is merciful and compassionate,

slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.

He is eager to relent and not punish.

14 Who knows? Perhaps he will give you a reprieve,

sending you a blessing instead of this curse.

Perhaps you will be able to offer grain and wine

to the Lord your God as before.

15 Blow the ram’s horn in Jerusalem!
Announce a time of fasting;
call the people together
for a solemn meeting.

Trumpet is blowing...are you Insubordinate?

Jonah 4:1-11

Jonah, a prophet w/ responsibilities for God

You, a Dad w/ responsibilities for God

  • Both faced w/ enemies that cause pain
  • both get hurt & see destruction
  • both faced w/ enemy they hate beyond description
  • both given the opportunity to FORGIVE
    • most major Bible characters grow to be better at the end of their life
    • prayer for Dads & CBC is that we are more like Jesus today than we were yesterday
    • by the end of “our” story we’re more
      • humble
      • faithful
      • spiritual
      • patient
      • loving
      • forgiving
      • graceful
    • chapter 4 Jonah is just as disobedient as he was in chapter 1
      • after the 3 day, all expense paid, whale guts cruise of a lifetime
      • ch 4 pressure’s off, storm gone
      • goes right back to being
        • arrogant
        • self-centered
        • self opinionated
        • unforgiving
        • unsympathetic
        • Fox Hole Christianity

1 This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry. 2 So he complained to the Lord about it: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, Lord? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people. 3 Just kill me now, Lord! I’d rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.”

4 The Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry about this?”

5 Then Jonah went out to the east side of the city and made a shelter to sit under as he waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 And the Lord God arranged for a leafy plant to grow there, and soon it spread its broad leaves over Jonah’s head, shading him from the sun. This eased his discomfort, and Jonah was very grateful for the plant.

7 But God also arranged for a worm! The next morning at dawn the worm ate through the stem of the plant so that it withered away. 8 And as the sun grew hot, God arranged for a scorching east wind to blow on Jonah. The sun beat down on his head until he grew faint and wished to die. “Death is certainly better than living like this!” he exclaimed.

9 Then God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry because the plant died?”

“Yes,” Jonah retorted, “even angry enough to die!”

10 Then the Lord said, “You feel sorry about the plant, though you did nothing to put it there. It came quickly and died quickly. 11 But Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness,[a] not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?”

  • anger is a human emotion
    • how we respond to a real or perceived injustice or wrong doing
    • not always wrong to get angry
    • righteous indignation:
      • Moses when Pharoah relented on promise
      • Jesus & misuse of the Temple
  • most times we’re angry b/c of our OWN sense of value, worth, right or wrong, or that justice has been violated. (doesn’t have anything to do w/ God or the Bible)
    • Cain killed Abel in selfish anger
    • Saul lost his throne b/c of selfish anger
    • Moses forfeited Promised land b/c of selfish anger
    • Dad, do you have an anger problem?
      • lose ur temper
      • verbalise ur frustration
      • go off & sulk
      • lay it at the foot of the cross or it will end up killing you
        • physically
        • emotionally
        • spiritually
  • Jonah wasn’t mad b/c of:
    • God’s will wasn’t done
    • God’s glory had been tarnished
    • God’s name had been dishonored
  • Jonah was mad b/c he didn’t get HIS WAY!
    • he wanted to see the people destroyed

NOTE: “The emptier the pot, the quicker it boils.” The less water there is in the pot, the quicker you reach the boiling point. What is it Jesus says about giving streams of living water? The more of Jesus you have in you - the longer it will take you to boil - the less of Jesus you have in you, the quicker you are to boil - to blow your top - to lose your temper.

  • Problem was what he said was going to happen, didn’t.
    • didn’t preach the message of repentance
    • not message of God’s love & saving grace
    • message of damnation & condemnation
      • you’re all doomed
      • God saw their repentance & didn’t destroy them & Jonah was mad
      • Jonah’s complaint -
        • God was too gracious
        • God was too loving
        • God didn’t wipe them out
        • never mind 120,000 got saved in a 3 day crusade
        • Jonah didn’t get HIS WAY
        • Jonah didn’t get His Preference
        • It was about Jonah’s glory & pride (b/c when a prophet said something was going to happen it was supposed to happen) not about God’s glory

  • Jonah becomes a “spectator” of destruction instead of a “participant” in restoration
    • prepared a shelter to “sulk” for 37 days to see if he could get his way
  • Dad - if the wife doesn’t give you what you want...
    • do you go sit & sulk?
    • silent treatment?
    • go shopping elsewhere?
    • how about changing what you want???

  • Jonah revealed his selfishness by expressing more concern over the dead vine than 120,000 people
    • are you more concerned for your personal preferences than the growth of CBC?
    • notice our preferences are like the plant...they eventually WILT & DIE!! v9
    • the incidental, trivial & unimportant want to move God & His purposes off the throne of our heart
  • God is concerned about...
    • people in Prescott & Nevada Co. headed for Hell (KJV who don’t know their right hand from their left)
    • His children ministering privately & publicly to those people w/ the Gospel message
    • His born again people using the innovations of this generation to reach the people of this generation
      • we’re not to get satisfied with the way we’ve always done it in this world B/C THIS A’INT OUR HOME... HEAVEN IS & THAT’S A WHOLE NEW WAY OF DOING THINGS

    • temple burned
    • people deported & made slaves
    • King Cyrus let some Jews return

  • Nehemiah’s gifts:
    • administration
    • organization
    • (44 separate groups working on the wall)

1 Then Eli-a-shib the high priest and the other priests started to rebuild at the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set up its doors, building the wall as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and the Tower of Han-a-nel. 2 People from the town of Jericho worked next to them, and beyond them was Zac-cur son of Im-ri.

V4 “beside him were...”

v5 “next were...”

My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned b/c I couldn’t concentrate.

Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn’t hack it, so they gave me the axe.

After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn’t suited for it. Mainly b/c it was a so-so job.

Next I tried working in a muffler factory but that was exhausting.

I wanted to be a barber, but I couldn’t cut it.

I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I just couldn’t cut the mustard.

I studied a long time to become a doctor, but I didn’t have any patients.

I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn’t live on my net income.

I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining.

Next I found being an electrician interesting, but the work was shocking.

After many years of trying to find steady work I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future in it.

Another guy said, “I like work - it fascinates me. I can sit and watch other’s do it for hours.”

  • When it comes to the Lord’s work

Jeremiah 8:20-22

CBC 6/5/11 SM

Initial Response: NOTHING!

Oh, but there is!

There’s even something better than going to Heaven...

20 “The harvest is finished,
and the summer is gone,” the people cry,
“yet we are not saved!”

21 I hurt with the hurt of my people.
I mourn and am overcome with grief.
22 Is there no medicine in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why is there no healing
for the wounds of my people?

    • judgment of God resulting in no harvest for the Jews
    • work an entire year in field & crops fail...
    • an entire life and come to death’s door w/ no relationship w/ Jesus
    • repeated many times in Hell... “my life is over, the summer is gone, & I am not saved”
    • rich man of Luke 16 was crying that over 2000 years ago...and he will be crying it 2000 years from now, 2 million, 2 billion, 2 trillion
    • going and Taking Someone With You
    • if U want to reject Jesus’ offer of forgiveness, salvation & an eternal home in paradise...that’s your business & ur right
    • but don’t take ur spouse with you
    • don’t take ur children with you
    • don’t take ur best friend with you
    • don’t take the people u work with
    • don’t take ur facebook friends

(what’s better than going to heaven??? simple, going and taking someone with you!!!!!)

    • put ur ear to the ground & listen
    • hear the thundering sound?
    • Niagara Falls is ahead & some people u know and love are headed downstream in a straw basket
    • hear their cry 10,000 yrs from now...
    • work while it is day for the night cometh when no man can work
  • v22 God’s indictment of the believing church
    • I hurt with the hurt of my people
    • I mourn and am overcome with grief
    • Is there no medicine in Gilead?
    • Is there no physician there
    • Why is there no healing for the wounds of my people?
  • There is medicine available but nobody is applying it
    • prayer is effective & our altars remain empty
    • we know people are headed to Hell & nobody is pleading or interceding (too busy w/ picnic lunches & a glorious sunset)
    • we see the condition of our community everyday and what are we doing? (maybe u don’t see, maybe ur not looking, maybe ur head is in the sand...) WAKE UP!
    • can we not spend 5 minutes a week in the front of this building begging God to give us an opportunity to help a convicted sinner??
    • is God “amazed” at our unconcern?
    • how many were responsible for giving someone else their first drink of alcohol?
    • how many were responsible for giving someone else their first puff on a cigarette?
    • how many were responsible for giving someone else their first “high” on illegal drugs?
    • how many were responsible for showing someone else their first pornographic picture?
    • how many were responsible for getting someone else involved in their first sexual immorality experience?
    • now you’re on your way to heaven and where are they????
    • if we’re going to weep for them, it’s today
    • if we’re going to rescue them, it’s today
    • if we’re going to ask forgiveness, it’s today
    • do u want them looking at you on the day of their judgment, and just before they are pushed off into hell & eternal torment, they scream your name & ask WHY???
