3 Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged the Lord for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting. 4 So people from all the towns of Judah came to Jerusalem to seek the Lord’s help.

5 Jehoshaphat stood before the community of Judah and Jerusalem in front of the new courtyard at the Temple of the Lord. 6 He prayed, “O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you!

  1. “How can I know God’s will?”
  2. “How can I be a success for God, others & myself?

We begin our search for the answer by evaluating our TRUST factor.

1MY SON, forget not my law or teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments;

2For length of days and years of a life [worth living] and tranquility [inward and outward and continuing through old age till death], these shall they add to you.

3Let not mercy and kindness [shutting out all hatred and selfishness] and truth [shutting out all deliberate hypocrisy or falsehood] forsake you; bind them about your neck, write them upon the tablet of your heart.(A)

4So shall you find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man.(B)

5Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

6In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.

7Be not wise in your own eyes; reverently fear and worship the Lord and turn [entirely] away from evil.(C)

8It shall be health to your nerves and sinews, and marrow and moistening to your bones.

9Honor the Lord with your capital and sufficiency [from righteous labors] and with the firstfruits of all your income;(D)

S.M. Lockridge - (excerpt)

You can trust Him. He’s the one who made us.

No barrier can hinder Him fro pouring out His blessing.

He does not have to call for help, & you can’t confuse Him.

He can satisfy all your needs, and He can do it simultaneously.

He’s the master of the mighty. He’s the capturer of conquerors. He’s the head of heroes. He’s the leader of legislators. He’s the overseer of the overcomers. He’s the Governor of the governors. He’s the Prince of princes. He’s the King of kings. He’s the Lord of lords. You can trust Him!!

ILL: Country song titles...

May the bird of paradise fly up your nose

You can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd

Thank God and greyhound she’s gone

How can I miss you if you won’t go away

George Jones wrote & sung a song after being critically injured b/c he was drunk at the wheel

“I’m living & dying w/ the choices I’ve made”

NEWS FLASH: so am I, so are you!!

19 “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! 20 You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This[a] is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

  • It’s a wonderful gift
    • given to Adam & Eve
    • separates us from rest of creation
    • used correctly it’s wonderful
    • used incorrectly...ask Adam & Eve...
  • LIfe is full of choices
    • hundreds everyday
      • paper or plastic?
      • continue life support, or not?
    • we, closeness, good, evil

  • General Category
    • what kind of work will I do?
      • ur gifts & talents, passions, etc
    • what college or training program?
    • who will I marry?
      • picking a mate FOR LIFE!!!
      • who’s God’s choice 4 U?
      • what about children?
      • how will U lead ur family?
    • where will I live?
      • community life
      • schools
      • politics
      • church home

ILL: Remember Lot? thot the lush green plain was better than the barren desert...Sodom & Gomorrah...

  • Major Choices for Believers
    • Will I live a life of obedience or self-will?
      • ethical & honest
      • honor spouse & keep vows
      • do life God’s way or mine
      • follow fleshly nature or God?
    • Will I commit to spiritual growth or not
      • maturity doesn’t just happen
      • mature faith takes work & effort
      • spiritual discipline like any other
        • regular Bible study
        • regular prayer times
        • constant God conscious
        • opportunity watching
    • Will I live for me or others?
      • every day we decide that
      • default choice is “ME, ME, ME”

Mark 8:34 Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.

    • Will I live for the culture or for Christ?
      • human desire
      • or will of God?’
      • not necessarily nasty...
      • anything taking the focus off Christ
  • Are my associates lifting me up or pulling me down?

Proverbs 13:20 He who walks [as a companion] with wise men is wise, but he who associates with [self-confident] fools is [a fool himself and] shall suffer for it.

* Think twice about the incredible power of choice

  • treasure the gift from God that sets us apart from animals and robots
  • choose wisely - we are living & dying w/ choices we make
  • what is your choice for eternity??????

TITUS 1:1-2

CBC 3/6/11 SM

Hwy 67 between Prescott & Emmett is named “Highway of Hope”

What is that all about? (anybody know?)

15-17 years ago Arkansas Legislature determined the road from Hope, AR to Hot Springs, AR would be designated the “Highway of Hope” as relating to the birthplace of Bill Clinton and the route he travelled to where he graduated High School.

I asked the State office of AR Hwy & Transportation this question, “I’m living on the Highway of Hope. What am I hoping for?”

Answer...Tourist traffic traveling between Hope & Hot Springs retracing Clinton’s path.

I only know how that effected me & quiet frankly it left me searching for something that would give me a little more HOPE! After all, this is a 17 year old project and they are just now putting up the signs on the highway

  • Men on road to Emmaus had lost hope b/c Jesus had been crucified...
    • hoping He would redeem Israel
  • Elijah lost hope and asked God to kill him
  • Job’s wife lost hope and told Job he should just curse God and die
  • U may be losing hope you’ll get to see any of the Super Bowl tonight if this lesson goes very

1PAUL, A bond servant of God and an apostle (a special messenger) of Jesus Christ (the Messiah) to stimulate and promote the faith of God's chosen ones and to lead them on to accurate discernment and recognition of and acquaintance with the Truth which belongs to and harmonizes with and tends to godliness,

2[Resting] in the hope of eternal life, [life] which the ever truthful God Who cannot deceive promised before the world or the ages of time began.

  • Hope to the human spirit is like oxygen to the physical body...lose hope get feelings...
    • senselessness
    • purposelessness
    • despair
  • Hope connects us to the future like memories connects us to the past
    • how do U know what happened in the past???
    • how do U know what’s going to happen in the future???
  • Hope defined: “Hope is, desire, w/ the expectation of getting what is desired.”
    • one cannot hope for something that is neither desired or expected
  • TEXT: our “HOPE” is Eternal Life
    • that is “desired”
    • that is “expected”
    • Based on WHAT????????

Romans 15:4 For whatever was thus written in former days was written for our instruction, that by [our steadfast and patient] endurance and the encouragement [drawn] from the Scriptures we might hold fast to and cherish hope.

  • Stories of Old give us hope
    • depressed - Elijah
    • scared - David
    • cheated - Joseph
    • crisis - Daniel
    • Hope found in Jesus Christ

JOHN 15: 13No one has greater love [no one has shown stronger affection] than to lay down (give up) his own life for his friends.

  • That kind of love gives us “HOPE”
    • love stated
    • love demonstrated
    • for purpose of our eternal life

Romans 6: 3Are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

4We were buried therefore with Him by the baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious [power] of the Father, so we too might [habitually] live and behave in newness of life.

5For if we have become one with Him by sharing a death like His, we shall also be [one with Him in sharing] His resurrection [by a new life lived for God].

6We know that our old (unrenewed) self was nailed to the cross with Him in order that [our] body [which is the instrument] of sin might be made ineffective and inactive for evil, that we might no longer be the slaves of sin.

  • No longer slaves to sin
    • made “profession” of salvation but life hasn’t changed?????

2 Cor. 5: 17Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

  • hope of eternal life
    • & hope of better life in the present

  • Without Christ there is NO HOPE
  • “life with Christ is an endless hope, life without Christ is a hopeless end.”

JAMES 3:2-18

CBC 2/27/11 SM

I love you/ur important 2 me/thank U so much/how can I repay U?/ U really look nice/ I like ur new hair do/ great job/ this place wouldn’t be the same w/out U/ i’m proud of U/ U R irreplaceable/ will U marry me?/ we’re having a baby...

  • I hate U/ U disgust me/ I wish U had never been born/ I wish U were dead/ U make me sick/ I want a divorce/ nobody cares about U/ i’ll never speak 2 U again...
  • words shape & define our life
  • words reveal the faith we have in our life

ILL: Mark 11 Jesus finds a fig tree w/ no figs/He said, “may no one ever eat fruit from U/ later it withered and died

  • He spoke TO the tree not AT the tree
    • wisdom one of my pastor’s gave me about preaching, “Preach TO the people, not AT them. Make it personal”

2For we all often stumble and fall and offend in many things. And if anyone does not offend in speech [never says the wrong things], he is a fully developed character and a perfect man, able to control his whole body and to curb his entire nature.

3If we set bits in the horses' mouths to make them obey us, we can turn their whole bodies about.

4Likewise, look at the ships: though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the impulse of the helmsman determines.

5Even so the tongue is a little member, and it can boast of great things. See how much wood or how great a forest a tiny spark can set ablaze!

6And the tongue is a fire. [The tongue is a] world of wickedness set among our members, contaminating and depraving the whole body and setting on fire the wheel of birth (the cycle of man's nature), being itself ignited by hell (Gehenna).

7For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea animal, can be tamed and has been tamed by human genius (nature).

8But the human tongue can be tamed by no man. It is a restless (undisciplined, irreconcilable) evil, full of deadly poison.

9With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men who were made in God's likeness!

10Out of the same mouth come forth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not to be so.

11Does a fountain send forth [simultaneously] from the same opening fresh water and bitter?

12Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine figs? Neither can a salt spring furnish fresh water.

13Who is there among you who is wise and intelligent? Then let him by his noble living show forth his [good] works with the [unobtrusive] humility [which is the proper attribute] of true wisdom.

14But if you have bitter jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry, selfish ambition) in your hearts, do not pride yourselves on it and thus be in defiance of and false to the Truth.

15This [superficial] wisdom is not such as comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual (animal), even devilish (demoniacal).

16For wherever there is jealousy (envy) and contention (rivalry and selfish ambition), there will also be confusion (unrest, disharmony, rebellion) and all sorts of evil and vile practices.

17But the wisdom from above is first of all pure (undefiled); then it is peace-loving, courteous (considerate, gentle). [It is willing to] yield to reason, full of compassion and good fruits; it is wholehearted and straightforward, impartial and unfeigned (free from doubts, wavering, and insincerity).

18And the harvest of righteousness (of conformity to God's will in thought and deed) is [the fruit of the seed] sown in peace by those who work for and make peace [in themselves and in others, that peace which means concord, agreement, and harmony between individuals, with undisturbedness, in a peaceful mind free from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts].

  • Bit & Rudder
    • bit in horses’ mouth turns the “whole” horse & rudder controls “whole” ship
    • how does our “tongue” (10cm [4 inches] long, turn (affect), the “whole” person?
    • What’s our ultimate “direction”
      • great commission
      • use tongue 4 that
      • hypocritical tongue can do lasting damage to that effort

  • devastating as a physical blow
    • TRUE or FALSE: “sticks & stones may brake my bones but words will never hurt me”
    • destructive words spoken can never be taken back
    • James instructs:
      • quick to hear
      • slow to speak
      • slow to anger
  • WARNING: the tongue is in a “wet” place and can easily slip

ILL: woman in Indian village/ gossiped about another lady/ found out she was wrong/ went to village wise man/ asked how she could take back all the wrong information she had spread/ wise man said go home, kill and pluck a chicken/ come back and see him and spread all the feathers on the way from her house to his/ she got there & he told her to go back home & pick up all the feathers/ she said she couldn’t b/c wind had scattered them beyond recovery/ just like your words, he said.

Explain this: “What’s in the well will come out in the water”

Luke 6: 45The upright (honorable, intrinsically good) man out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart produces what is upright (honorable and intrinsically good), and the evil man out of the evil storehouse brings forth that which is depraved (wicked and intrinsically evil); for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart his mouth speaks.
