WHAT WE MUST HAVE TO REACH THE UNSAVED?

LUKE 15:1-10

CBC 2/13/11 SN DISCUSSION

ILL: 6 yr old discussing w/ his dad what the preacher does...dad explained preacher does a lot more than preach...how difficult it is to visit/win souls/counsel/study/pray...not easy to preach a sermon...Little boy replied...it ain’t so easy to listen either!

  • Messages are meant to CHANGE & CHALLENGE us...not CONDEMN us.
  • TEXT about seeking & finding things that have been lost...
    • sheep
    • coin (days wages)
    • sinner

1NOW THE tax collectors and [notorious and [a]especially wicked] sinners were all coming near to [Jesus] to listen to Him.

2And the Pharisees and the scribes kept muttering and indignantly complaining, saying, This man accepts and receives and welcomes [[b]preeminently wicked] sinners and eats with them.

3So He told them this parable:

4What man of you, if he has a hundred sheep and should lose one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness (desert) and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?

5And when he has found it, he lays it on his [own] shoulders, rejoicing.

6And when he gets home, he summons together [his] friends and [his] neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep which was lost.

7Thus, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one [[c]especially] wicked person who repents ([d]changes his mind, abhorring his errors and misdeeds, and determines to enter upon a better course of life) than over ninety-nine righteous persons who have no need of repentance.

8Or what woman, having ten [silver] drachmas [each one equal to a day's wages], if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and look carefully and diligently until she finds it?

9And when she has found it, she summons her [women] friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the silver coin which I had lost.

10Even so, I tell you, there is joy among and in the presence of the angels of God over one [[e]especially] wicked person who repents ([f]changes his mind for the better, heartily amending his ways, with abhorrence of his past sins).

  • Is there more concern over lost livestock & finances than LOST PEOPLE???
    • Do we expend more effort looking for a lost check book than an unsaved neighbor?
    • do we take more care in tending to a pet in cold weather than a person who does not know the Savior?
    • we need some things in our life to effectively reach the lost & unsaved

TO REACH THE LOST WE NEED “COMPASSION”

  • Tax collectors & sinners were “coming near” to Jesus to hear him
    • weren’t running “from” Him
    • wasn’t b/c of a ear tickling message
    • Jesus didn’t compromise on sin
    • wasn’t a “sign & wonder” show
    • why did the lost “seek” out Jesus?
      • his compassion
      • loved them w/ a compassionate heart
      • didn’t have a condemning attitude
      • Jesus received them as a “friend”
        • despite their faults

ILL: traffic accident/3 groups of people/1) onlookers, curious w/ little involvement/ 2)Law Enforcement, investigate & assign blame w/ warnings & penalties/ 3) Paramedics, don’t care about who’s @ fault/don’t give lectures about bad driving habits/respond to hurting/bandage wounds/give words of encouragement/...WHICH GROUP ARE YOU IN?

  • What is CBC best known for?
    • standing by while lost go to Hell?
    • judging & assigning blame?
    • responding to the hurting?
  • The Unsaved have never flocked to the church that’s a “bystander” or “judgmental”

TO REACH THE LOST WE NEED “EFFORT”

  • Shepherd didn’t wait for lost sheep to wander home
  • Woman didn’t wait for coin to just “turn up”
    • both executed great EFFORT in the recovery process
    • we must be active not passive
    • we must “bring” them to Christ
  • Lost must be included in our prayers
  • WHAT specific ministry dedicated to reaching lost @ CBC?
  • outreach must be a priority

TO REACH THE LOST WE NEED “PERSISTENCE”

  • Shepherd & woman didn’t quit till they accomplished their goal
    • not easy to reach through the muck of life into a person’s “heart”
    • takes time to build a meaningful relationship with trust
    • we can never quit this effort until Jesus comes & tells us time is up!

CONCLUSION:

  • religious leaders of Jesus’ day were indifferent & antagonistic toward sinners seeking Jesus
  • Jesus highlights the “JOY” factor on earth & in heaven over the lost being found
  • if lost people matter so much to God, why don’t they matter that much to us???
