Few know about “true” worship

  • We know “elements” of worship
    • go to church
    • sing songs
    • listen to sermons
  • we can do all those & yet, not worship
    • don’t mistake the “means” of worship for worship itself

ILL: Dad asked son what he wanted for his birthday/Son said, “ball”/ What kind?/if U have time 2 play w/ me -football/if U don’t have time 2 play w/ me-soccer ball/kid more interested in “GIVER” than the “GIFT”

  • True worship not interested in “created”
    • it’s interested in the “CREATOR”
  • Not “how did U like the sermon/music/illustrations...?”
    • Rather, “how did God like it?”
  • True worship can’t be limited to 1 hour/wk
    • worshippers are not there to be entertained or to observe
    • don’t “sit back & relax & enjoy the program...this is not a PBS broadcast
  • the line-up
    • many think the pastor & worship leaders are the entertainers & cong. the audience
      • spectator asks “what’s in it for me?”
    • in True Worship (GRIT) audience are the performers, staff are directors & God is the audience
      • God asks, “what’s in it for me?”

Genesis 22:5 “Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, and then we will come right back.”

vv 1-19 give us the INGREDIENTS of Worship

1 Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called.

“Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.”

2 “Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”

  • God “speaks” to the worshipper
    • true worship based on God revealing Himself to us
    • NOT our “likes & dislikes”
    • NOT our “preferences & priorities”
    • IS based on the BIBLE
  • concerning the “ingredients” to our worship service...R they biblical?
    • music?
    • sermon?
    • prayers?
    • offering?
    • testimonies?
    • baptisms?
  • Why?...should they be biblical?
    • the kind of god we worship is the kind of person we will become
      • god of sports
      • god of sex
      • god of war
      • (Greek mythology...)

3 The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about.

  • Appropriate Preparations
    • an unprepared heart can’t worship in a biblical worship service
    • know any Pro Football player taking field today “unprepared??? NO!
    • we “prepare” for WORK
    • we “prepare” for HUNTING
    • we “prepare” for VACATION
    • we “prepare” for EXAMS
  • Preparing for “church” not the same...
    • dressed in Sunday best
    • fixing hair/make-up
    • grabbing a Bible
  • Preparing for “worship” like game day...
    • Eliminate Anything That Distracts You...

4 On the third day of their journey, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 “Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, and then we will come right back.”

  • @ Certain Point Servants Stayed Behind
    • probably would interfered w/ sacrifice, distracting from worship
    • separate from anything that draws our attention away from God
      • can’t “worship” & text on ur cell phone @ same time!!!
      • Worship not a “multi-tasking” situation
  • Things that can distract us
    • work
    • family
    • finances
    • sitting n back of auditorium w/ all those people moving about N front of U
  • Focus totally on God
    • NOT preacher
    • NOT music
    • NOT version of Bible
    • NOT ushers
    • NOT what someone is/isn’t wearing
  • We’re not here to worship that stuff...
    • Coach establishes a curfew on Sat. to prepare for game on Sun.
    • What’s ur Sat. curfew to prepare to Worship on Sun.????

6 So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together, 7 Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?”

8 “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together.

9 When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. 10 And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice.

*Abraham dedicated his Son Isaac to God

    • Abraham dedicated himself totally to God
    • he dedicated all he had & all he was to God
    • True Worship is COSTLY!
      • IT TAKES “GRIT”
  • “COASTING” through a service is “cheap”
    • playing church
    • dedication to true worship is costly
      • during game u don’t hold anything back (give 110%)

11 At that moment the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Yes,” Abraham replied. “Here I am!”

12 “Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”

13 Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14 Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

  • Abraham named the place, “the Lord will provide”
    • proclaiming nature & work of God
    • declaring who God is
    • declaring what God does
    • that’s praise & worship
  • Praise - proclaiming what God has done
  • Worship - proclaiming who God really is
  • ? How do players proclaim their coach is a great one???
    • dump cooler of gator-aide on him after the game
  • ? How do they celebrate their victory in the locker room???
    • spray champaign everywhere

Is our worship to God (figuratively speaking) similar to those two scenes?????
