6 What can we bring to the Lord?
What kind of offerings should we give him?
Should we bow before God
with offerings of yearling calves?
7 Should we offer him thousands of rams
and ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
Should we sacrifice our firstborn children
to pay for our sins?

8 No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good,
and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to
walk humbly with your God.

  • Standard of “rightness”
    • God’s Word
      • w/out error/perfect
    • Man’s Word

Prov 16: 25There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

(Def.) right - just ,correct, true, appropriate, healthy, sane, competent, fair

  • What does God say is the Right thing to do
    • forgive one another
    • love unconditionally
    • accept His offer of escape from our corrupted condition (sin)
    • live in obedience to what He knows is best for us
  • Why is it difficult to do what’s right?
    • against our very nature
    • corrupted @ conception w/ curse from ancestors Adam & Eve
    • led to believe what’s right isn’t as much ‘FUN’ as what’s not
      • Lie from Devil
  • Task of Doing What’s Right is an “Inward Battle”
    • we are our own worst enemy
    • Holy Spirit is our comforter & companion in that fight

  • fill our heart w/ compassion & forgiveness for our fellow man
    • b/c humans have to fight to act “right” (going to need forgiveness)
  • mercy (Hbrw) “Unexpected Kindness”
    • quote, “It wouldn’t be mercy if they deserved it”
  • “LOVE” mercy doesn’t say “HAVE” mercy
    • motivation for showing mercy is not ‘command’, IT’S LOVE
    • Good Samaritan
    • Father of prodigal son
    • Jesus w/ woman caught in adultery
    • God & thief on the cross

Matt. 5:7 Blessed [will be blessed] are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

  • Reality of our nature
    • we return rudeness w/ rudeness
    • we return hatred w/ hatred
    • we return yelling w/ yelling
    • we return a slap in the face w/ a slap in the face

NOTICE: 1st 2 have nothing 2 do w/ God

they are how we behave toward one another

  • God expects His children to behave & get along w/ one another
  • #3: WALK w/ God
    • God created & designed us for a RELATIONSHIP w/ Him
    • Adam walked w/ God in the garden
    • Enoch walked w/ God
      • walked home w/ God...
    • Noah walked faithfully w/ God
    • David walked w/ God among worshipers
  • Look @ result of these lives that “walked” w/ God
    • Father of all mankind
    • didn’t suffer death
    • saved humanity from extinction
    • killed the Giant & was crowned king

Jesus died so we could have a relationship...

  • Walk HUMBLY w/ God
    • not arrogantly, realize our weakness
    • not full of self-pride, but lowly
    • not assuming, but modest

JOHN 17:20-26

CBC 1/23/11 SN

We know about “UNITY” from learning & practicing “PATRIOTISM”

Jesus spoke about a unity far beyond patriotism

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you[a] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

  • When He looked @ Peter, He saw “Pentecost” & 3000 saved
  • When He looked @ John, He saw church @ Ephesus & churches in Asia Minor
  • When He looked ahead to Paul, He saw Europe & Us
  • He prayed for us all in v20
  • 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,

  • 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.
  • What could He have prayed for right before His arrest & execution?
    • strength
    • 11 not to run off
    • He saw our unity more important
  • incredible “tension” in original disciples
    • who was the greatest
    • same w/ any group today
      • preferences
      • control issues
      • tradition
  • to be dynamic & grow we must ask God to control the “tensions
  • Jesus prayed for us, “Lord, make them one
    • unity is “given” not achieved
    • must be generated by the Spirit of God
    • Jesus is our common denominator
    • carnal Christians cause dis-unity

  • visible unity of believers will have an impact
    • impossible for any group of humans to “get along”
    • unusual when Christians can & do
    • it gets noticed...

John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”;

    • a “fussy” church hurts the cause of Christ (powerless witness for Christ)
    • there is already disunity in
      • homes & families
      • work places
      • government on all levels
    • a united theology wasn’t what Jesus prayed for & won’t compel the world to believe
    • human eloquence will not compel the world to believe
    • the size of our church won’t do it
    • no program, slogan or goal will accomplish the feat
    • ONLY a supernatural oneness in His church will get attention
    • that will cause the world to confess that truly God must be among us

  • Glory is the visible manifestation of all the divine attributes.
    • what we see when we look @ God
    • not when you look @ the pastor
    • not when you look @ your SS class
    • not when you gaze on a deacon
    • not when you look @ the youth group

* We’re unified when we are all looking @ JESUS!

Don’t Be Tricked

Galatians 6:7-9

CBC 1/16/11 SM

ILL: little boy had special fruit tree he would climb & play imaginary games in. Dad going to cut it down b/c doesn’t produce fruit. Boy get up during night & ties a bunch of apples on tree limbs. Dad sees apples, doesn’t cut tree down & tells Mom, UR not gonna belive this…& it’s a “pear” tree!

Usually expect pears on pear tree b/c we’ve been taught U “reap what U sow”

Be not tricked; God is not made sport of: for whatever seed a man puts in, that will he get back as grain.

Gal 6:8 Because he who puts in the seed of the flesh will of the flesh get the reward of death; but he who puts in the seed of the Spirit will of the Spirit get the reward of eternal life.

Gal 6:9 And let us not get tired of well-doing; for at the right time we will get in the grain, if we do not give way to weariness.

· Parable of wheat & tares

o What was planted came up

· Gen 1:11 And God said, Let grass come up on the earth, and plants producing seed, and fruit-trees giving fruit, in which is their seed, after their sort: and it was so.

Be not tricked; God is not made sport of:

· Is it possible 4 us 2 B tricked?

o Maybe we think we’ve “pulled the wool” over God’s eyes?

o He doesn’t C what we’re doing

o He doesn’t know what’s N our hearts & minds

o Paul saying, “Don’t fool urself, ur not fooling God

o Whatever seed u r planting is going to come up

· not for just the “fun” of planting

· what do u call a “planter” who doesn’t think about what they’re planting??? Foolish

o sowing “wild oats”

o harvest of:

§ bad health

§ short finances

§ innumerable other disasters

· Will reap what u sow

o Not something else

o Sow wild oats, won’t reap tame beneficial oats

· Sowing seed right now

· 2 times of harvest

o Seed we’ve sown in the past

o Ill: motorcycle accident, can’t hardly bend over when I get out of bed & then I have to run to get loose enough to make the day

o Future harvest: where u spend eternity…depends on crop u planted

· Plant 1 kernel of corn & a plant comes up w/ 2 ears w/ guess how many kernels on each ear??? (a “bunch”)

· Applies if we sow “wild oats”

· Applies if we sow “tame oats”

· Adam & Eve sowed some wild oats by disobeying God

o Who reaped the harvest of that???

o All of their decendants (U & Me)

· Set a bad example 4 ur children & guess what they will do???

o Exactly…more & worse

· Set a good example 4 ur children & guess what they will do???

o Exactly…more & better

· Seed we sow affects more than just us

CONCL: don’t be tricked

Ur not fooling

Confession Is Good
Nehemiah 9:1-3

CBC 1/16/11 SN
Confession leads to Consecration, and ultimately to Celebration.
* When we get right with God we bring the glory to God that He so richly deserves, and we will be blessed the way He wants to bless us.

· Obedience = Blessings

· Disobedience = judgment

· No half-hearted/fence riding/ weak kneed, watered down/ anemic Christianity will produce God’s best 4 us

Neh 9:1 On the twenty-fourth day of the seventh month, the people of Israel went without eating, and they dressed in sackcloth and threw dirt on their heads to show their sorrow.

Neh 9:2 They refused to let foreigners join them, as they met to confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors.

Neh 9:3 For three hours they stood and listened to the Law of the LORD their God, and then for the next three hours they confessed their sins and worshiped the LORD.
3 basics you'll find in their prayer of confession-Israel's God, Guilt, and Grace...
• Israel's God.
God centered prayer.

prayers today are man centered.

· what we want

· not about what God wants.

· Real confession is based on the character and nature of God.

· God is a glorious God.

· Everything the devil does ends in misery...

· everything God does ends in glory!

· saved by grace and it ends in glory.

· Jesus died on the cross, but He rose in glory.

· He had a glorious birth, a virgin birth.

· He had a glorious life, a perfect life,

· never sinning in thought, word, or deed.

· He had a glorious death, a sacrificial death, for the sins of the entire world.

· He had a glorious resurrection, bursting out of that tomb like a heavenly beam of light!

· glorious in His return to earth.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

What a glorious day that will be

· God is a powerful God.

· world is trying to kill God w/ a big bang but it won't work.

· And the concept of billions of years is trying to erase the 6,000 year Bible history.

· We're desperately looking for some connection to monkeys when we should be reconnecting w/ our Maker!

· We're still searching for little green men that aren't there...but if we'd just open our eyes we could look into the face of the extra terrestrial Who created us and we could return to Him and be welcomed into His home beyond the stars!

· God is a caring God.

o hears when we cry.

· God is a trustworthy God.

o He's worth confessing to.

• Israel's guilt.
* we’ve come short of the glory of God

· None of us are righteous

· Sins of “co-mission”

· Sins of “o-mission”

• Israel's grace.
* received grace from God when they confessed.

· They deserved judgment

· in mercy God forgave them.

· Then He gives them blessing after blessing after blessing!

· None of this did they deserve.

· all gifts of grace.

· God is so good!

· And His goodness is leading them to repentance.

· God's first choice is to use goodness to lead us to Him,

· but if we insist, He will use judgment to bring us back to Him in repentance.

MATTHEW 25:31-40

CBC 1/9/11 SM

*Jesus always using object lessons...

sheep & goats mingled during day but were separated @ night (goats can’t tolerate cold & must be herded 2gether)

31 “But when the Son of Man[a] comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations[b] will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[c] you were doing it to me!’

  • black & white object lesson (no gray area)
  • people in 1 of 2 categories
    • righteous
    • unrighteous
  • not difficult to tell difference between the 2

  • Provide others w/ simple acts of kindness
    • fed hungry
    • gave drink to thirsty
    • provided a place to stay for the nite
    • clothes for those without any
    • medicine for the sick
    • visited the prisoners
  • No pomp, plaque or prestige
    • self-sacrificing service that’s not noticeable
  • Used their resources to be a blessing
    • some use the excuse for not helping...”when did we see You in need, Lord?” v44
    • v45 when U refused to help the least of these my brothers & sisters U were refusing to help me
    • not so much the “WRONG-DOING”
    • it’s the “FAILURE TO DO GOOD”
      • failure to launch
      • sin of omission
      • ILL: Rich man w/ abundant harvest/build bigger barns instead of sharing w/ needy/God called him a “fool” & required his life that night
  • God blesses us so we can bless others
    • we all have something we can share
    • if we become “hoarders” we eventually lose it all

Henry Drummond, “You will find, as you look back on life, that the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others.”

  • Spiritual vitality is gained by kindness to others
    • focus on our personal problems all the time drains our spiritual energy
    • James 2:20 “Faith without works is dead.”
    • vibrancy takes more than belief...it takes action
  • Righteous surprised by the significance of their actions
    • neither group are surprised by their placement by the King
    • they’re surprised by the reason the King uses for placement
    • v40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[c] you were doing it to me!’
  • TIME-OUT: Not saying works for salvation!
    • how they treated the “least of these” was not purpose of being accepted or rejected
    • sheep didn’t show love to gain heaven
    • John 14: 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
    • True Disciple will love & serve the least brother w/ compassion:
      • not enabling & spoiling
      • give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish (cook, clean, child care...) feed them for life
  • We are the hands & feet of Jesus on this earth
    • ambassadors to others
