ADD-ONS
2 PETER 1:5-9
CBC 5/29/09 Sunday Morning

Illustration “do you believe I can do it” tightrope walker to promoter
Across Niagra Falls…I saw you
“Believe” I can do it again?
Get in the wheel barrow…???”
“believe” – GR- “to live by”
How often tell Jesus, I believe…
But refuse to get in wheelbarrow?

SINCE YOU HAVE “FAITH”…ADD…
VIRTUE: -- MORAL EXCELLENCE

with relationship to God…
be a person of character
our “ideal” what we wish we were
“reputation” what people say we are
“character” what we really are
“Virtue” GR – deals with thought life

KNOWLEDGE:--MULTI LEVEL
  1. General Intelligence
  2. Police in Wichita, KS arrest 22yr man trying to pass counterfeit $16 bills
  3. General knowledge of religion
  4. Lawful & unlawful for Christian
  5. Deeper things of Christianity
  6. Moral wisdom of right living
Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge;

Want to add knowledge to your faith?
Add Sunday School, Sunday Night & Wednesday. …

TEMPERANCE:--SELF CONTROL
One who masters his desires & passions (esp. sensual appetites)
Lies Of Satan:
I just can’t help myself…
Everyone else is doing it so I might as well…
God wants me to be happy…
(not by worldly standards)
He wants us filled with JOY
He wants us to be RIGHTEOUS
Happier when we live according to His guidelines
PATIENCE:--
NT-- person not swerved from their deliberate purpose & loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings.
New England preacher Phillips Brooks was noted for his poise and quiet manner. At times, however, even he suffered moments of frustration and irritability. One day a friend saw him feverishly pacing the floor like a caged lion. "What's the trouble, Mr. brooks?" he asked.
"The trouble is that I'm in a hurry, but God isn't!"

GODLINESS:--
Spirit of reverence and respect to God in all matters.
Understands He is a Holy God.
Add to our faith…not outward compliance to certain rules…but inward purity of heart.
BROTHERLY KINDNESS & CHARITY:--
  1. Combined because they are so related…
  2. Commanded to love one another
  3. If we don’t love one another the love of God is not in us.
  4. If we can’t love our brother who we can see, how are we supposed to love God who we can’t see?
1Th 4:9 Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another,

1Th 4:10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more,

If I have faith enough to remove mountains, and don’t have love, then I AM NOTHING.

CONCLUSION:--
  • Do you have faith?
  • Now add to that faith…add-ons
  • That customizes who you are…
  • That makes you uniquely qualified to be used of God…

CONSIDER YOUR WAYS AMERICA
HAGGAI 1:1-7
CBC 5/3/09 Sunday Morning

Hag 1:1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

Hag 1:2 Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, saying, This people say, It is not the time for us to come, the time for Jehovah's house to be built.

Hag 1:3 Then came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,

Hag 1:4 Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your ceiled houses, while this house lieth waste?

Hag 1:5 Now therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.

Hag 1:6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

Hag 1:7 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.

THOT:
Addressed to leaders of Church & State, but blames the “people” themselves, lest they rebel against their leadership!
Continued negligence of God results in diminished returns on our investments
  • Plant much/little harvest
  • Eat much/still hungry
  • Drink much/still thirsty
  • More Clothes/still not warm
  • Wages/into bag w/ holes
GOD’S ADVICE:
“consider your ways”

WHERE HAVE WE NEGLECTED GOD?
  • Public education:
  • Prayer out of school…
  • Bible out of school…
Legal System:
10 Commandments removed from court room…

Tithes & offerings:
Is it harder or easier to give 10% of your earning to God in this economic downturn?
Continued neglect of trusting God with your finances will only lead to worse economic times!
Right to a God-given life
Aborting Living Human Beings before birth…
Thou shalt not kill the innocent
Building His Temple

1Co 6:19 Or know ye not that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have from God? and ye are not your own;

1Co 6:20 for ye were bought with a price: glorify God therefore in your body.

We are to build His temple (improve ourselves by obedience, surrender & experience)
Using our hands for His work & glory
God uses the “hands” of people to do almost everything He does for people in need…
  • Healing…doctors & nurses
  • Loving…hugs & kisses
  • Feeding…cooking
  • Funding…giving
Deliver His Word…
We “hear” preaching (message from God)…
Refuse to change our mind
Refuse to obey His instruction
Refuse to change our ways

Psa 36:8, “they shall be inebriated with the richness of Thy house,”

WHAT SHALL WE DO?
Mat 6:33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Seek first His kingdom;
We have made “our kingdom” higher on the priority list…
seek first to be righteous,
we seek first to be “self-gratified”
what’s in it for me?...
and to become interested in His favor,
we’re more interested in what our friends will say about us,
or gaining the “favor” of the group we want to be accepted in for our self esteem boost
and all necessary things will be added to you.
We don’t want just the necessary…
We want it all!
And we want it now!
He has control over all things,
Humans easily forget this part
We’re not in control…
Weather, aging, death…
and He can give you what you need.
He will give you what he deems best for you.
Even if it means w/holding to get our attention!

CONCLUSION:
What is God after? (3 things)
  1. for us to be ashamed of our disobedience…
  2. for us to repent…turn from our disobedient ways of living…
  3. for us to obey and live prosperous lifestyles
INVITATION:
Consider your ways and do something about it…in & beyond this altar!

Devil Worshiper 666
Revelation 13:1-18
CBC 1/11/09 Sunday Morning

Worship – reverent love and devotion accorded a deity, idol, sacred object
  • V4 And they worshipped the dragon…
And they worshipped the beast…
Incomparable – who’s like him?
Invincible – who’s stronger than him?
  • V8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life…
  • V12 …and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast…
  • V15 …and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
What image comes to mind…when “devil worship” is mentioned?

Sacrifices, blood baths, red hooded robes, pentagrams, lust for supernatural power…?
Categorize as “Non-believers”…
Have you ever given worship to devil?
Are you a devil worshiper?
Devoted to opposing God’s will?
Love the things God’s opposed to?
Sunday School answer is “Certainly Not”
What if I told you Peter did…
  • Mt 16:23 But he [Jesus] turned and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me Satan: thou are an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
Definition. “Satan” – an adversary, one who opposes…
Definition. “Offence” – stumbling-block

Peter’s wishes hindering God’s will
Would prevent Sacrifice for our Sins!

Definition. “Savourest not” – selfish will, not thinking in line with God’s will…
We lend aid to the devils cause when we oppose God’s way by selfish reasoning & cause others to stumble
  • Mt 12:30 He that is not w/ me is against me; and he that gathereth not w/ me scattereth abroad.
  • Mt 6:24 No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one & love the other, or else he will hold to the one & despise the other.
Self-evaluation:
How much have we aided the enemy?
*Let activities encroach worship time?
*My will be done…not THY will…
*Refuse to “Believe” Jesus wants a relationship with us…
*Refuse to “Trust” Jesus w/ our all…

Devil worshipers don’t all wear red hoods…
Have you intentionally been aiding & abedding the “Dragon”?
Would you be honest & admit you’ve been unintentionally aiding the Dragon on occasion?
Jesus is “incomparable” – who is like Him?
Jesus is “invincible” – who can defeat Him?

Don’t be a “Devil Worshiper 666”
Make sure your name is in the Lambs Book of Life (salvation)
Make sure every choice, decision & action R N the center of God’s Will
Before you stay home tonight from worship…ask…who am I supporting?
Before you say that foul word…ask
Before you put your desire first…ask
Before you stand still in this invitation

Seven Words From the Cross

SEVEN WORDS FROM THE CROSS
LUKE 23:34-43
CBC 3/28/10 Sunday Morning
Palm Sunday/Passion Week/Journey begins to the Cross
The Cross-God’s final answer for the sins of mankind
Jesus on cross to open door way between us & a holy God

FORGIVENESS FOR YOU AT THE CROSS
LUKE 23:34 Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

Forgive Who?
  • Soldiers?
  • Priests, teachers, Pharisees? Judas, who betrayed Him?
  • Crowd that cried, “Crucify”?
  • Only representatives of ME & U!

Forgiveness For?
  • Disciples that forsook & fled
  • Soldier that nailed Him 2 cross
  • Every person who ever sinned

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

SALVATION FOR YOU AT THE CROSS
LUKE 23:43 To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

God also sees the “individual”
No one is beyond hope of redemption
Salvation’s way is simple…
  • Simply ask
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
  • Now or Never (2nd chances not guaranteed)
LOVE FOR YOU AT THE CROSS
JOHN 19:26,27 Woman, behold thy son!

Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother!
Attention to “Relationship”
“Woman”? not Mother…
  • She must see Him as her Lord
  • His agony then takes on a glorious purpose
John took her immediately
  • He already had accepted Jesus as the Savior
  • A love “received” is to be SHARED WITH OTHERS
ATONEMENT FOR YOU AT THE CROSS
MATTHEW 27:46 Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Sun couldn’t shine on the crucifixion of the Creator
Darkness for 3 hours
  • Symbolic of darkness that wrapped the soul of our Savior

2Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
  • Like scapegoat of OT banished N2 wilderness
  • Jesus had to bear the sin of the world, “ALONE”
  • Never before had He stood alone
  • Forsaken, but still the well-beloved
  • Carrying out “atonement” for our sin
JESUS SUFFERED FOR YOU AT THE CROSS
JOHN 19:28 I thirst.
Crucifixion not sudden death
  • Long, slow & drawn out
  • Hot under an Eastern Sun
  • Wounded hands & feet quickly inflamed
  • Fever & dehydration
Psalm 22:14 I have no more strength than a few drops of water. All my bones are out of joint; my heart is like melted wax.

Psalm 22:15 My strength has dried up like a broken clay pot, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You, God, have left me to die in the dirt.

JESUS WAS THE VICTOR OVER SIN FOR YOU AT THE CROSS
JOHN 19:30 It is finished:
“ACCOMPLISHED”!
  • End of an era (OT)
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Didn’t say, “I am finished”…
  • He said, “IT, IS FINISHED”
o Victory over sin
o Victory over death
o Victory over Satan
o Victory over Hell

ETERNAL SECURITY FOR YOU AT THE CROSS
LUKE 23:46 Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit:
7 words began, “Father, forgive…”
7 words end, “Father, into thy hands”

John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
  • Jesus consciously gave his life
o He laid it on the altar
o Just like OT sacrifice

David said, while in great trouble, put his trust in God…

Psalm 31:5 Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
Jesus, also put His trust in God, agreeing w/…

Psalm 31:14 But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.

Psalm 31:15 My times are in thy hand:

Speaks of confidence in God
  • Security in the Father
  • Pointed the way to all who die believing
  • Stephen, 1st Christian martyr felt
2Ti 1:12 …for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
  • Eternal security in the cross
